Recently I was talking to a friend who speaks arabic and he told me that r-h-m root can mean either mercy or a womb. I can now see it's exactly the same in Hebrew
Not surprising since Arabic and Hebrew are sister languages...
@@adrianblake8876 You'd be surprised how many differences there are, though. It's not obvious that two homophones would exist in both branches of central semitic. Arabic being a sister language is saying a bit much. Ugaritic and Amorite would be more sister-like (although it seems that Amorite is actually the ancestor of Hebrew, still very similar).
@@tymmiara5967 I'm not really surprised by how many differences there are, seeing that there's not much mutual intelligibility between the two...
Also, Amorite; that's a real language!?
@@adrianblake8876 Yes, a year and a half ago the discovery of a pair of clay tablets was published. They were actually a bilingual phrasebook for people who know Akkadian of how to speak Amorite. It included some useful phrases and a bunch of basic words. You'd be surprised how similar they are to Masoretic Hebrew, despite being about 2000 years older than the masoretes. (The tablets are dated to about ~1800BC, times of Hammurabi and thus Abraham). It's one of those once-in-a-lifetime discoveries. It can't get much better than finding a bilingual textbook.
The paper was titled "Two remarkable vocabularies: Amorite-Akkadian bilinguals!" by Andrew George and Andrew Krebernik in Revue d’assyriologie et d’archéologie orientale Volume 116, Issue 1, January 2022, pages 113 to 166
A question: in 10:59 you give images of hot things to describe the verb חרה, is it actually used in other contexts as such, or do we only find it in the sense of being angry!?
