When Miles is invited to see Miguel, Spider punk immediately starts collecting the tech for his bootleg dimension watch. He predicted the outcome of the meeting and started preparing to help Miles and Gwen
How the hell are people saying they see this movie a lot of times or they gonna see watch it again like do they just go the movie theater 4 times in a row Dear god where the hell did you kids come from y’all want some cookies or something?
Not to mention how he immediately tried to stop Miles from going to Nueva York in the first place when Jess told them that Miguel wanted to see everyone
One of my favourite aspects of this movie is that there’s definitely an undertone of miles + Gwen having a crush on eachother, but miles is mostly just genuinely devastated that his friends didn’t come and visit him.
I also love the theme of just how lonely being Spider-Man is. Miles doesn’t have many friends. Gwen has no friends. In the previous movie, Peter B had no relationships, was completely alone. Noir was depressed and alone. Even Penny is shown to be struggling in the new movie. All they really have is each other, and Miles was deprived of that.
I think that’s why it hits so hard when you find out they knew he was not “supposed” to be a spider man. And why Miles felt so betrayed that they didn’t tell him.
it's not really an undertone when spider-man india just flat out says how they are romantically interested in one-another. Edit: Unless I'm misunderstanding what an undertone is
I love how the movie explored Miles's loneliness, as well as how it juxtaposed it against Gwen's. It may just be that I'm a young adult now and in that perfect place to relate to these coming of age Spider-Man stories, but I could really relate with that kind of social loneliness, longing for connection, but unable to really find it. Gwen jumped at the opportunity to join the spider society, not realizing she'd have to compromise her values to stay. Miles was ecstatic to join too, until he found out what he'd have to let go of. His example of not betraying his values is what led Gwen to trying to help Miles. He showed her that the shallow connections she felt, and the temporary relief from her anxiety and trauma were not worth betraying what she believed in and who she was. Can't wait to see how they finish this brilliant trilogy
Hobie is my stand out character for this film. He's brilliant but doesn't show it openly. He comes off as cold and a bit selfish until you actually see what the hell he's doing. He genuinely wants everyone to think for themselves and to succeed as the best spider people they can be. Why join the task force? To do some good. He only leaves once 2099 openly declares war on Miles.
Like how it seems he's stealing Miguel's stuff just to be a pest... until you realize on rewatch that he's grabbing the parts he needs to make Gwen a bootleg dimensional watch because he knows things are about to go south.
After my first watch it all dawned on me how elite he really was. Not only the dude is hilarious but so smart. He befriends miles and has his back subtly when he says “me and him don’t follow rules” to Jess, but miles didn’t get what he was protecting him from. The way Hobie seems antagonistic towards miles but is actually warning him is incredible and he plans way ahead by stealing those pieces for watches because he knew once shit went down with miles, Gwen would likely end up out the society too. This dude is the unsung MVP of the movie
He really had no intentions of sticking around either. When Miles asks why he still sticks around with the Spider Society, he says he's just looking out for his drummer, AKA Gwen. And as he's saying that, he's stealing parts to build Gwen her own watch. He was the only character in the entire movie who was looking out for everyone and didn't betray any of his friends' trust. Actual gigachad.
This is the Hobie appreciation league and I am living for it! I also loved how even Miguel didn’t want to deal with him despite the fact he was a member of the task force which also shows even in light of their heavily conflicting ideologies Hobie is just too effective as a “hero” to go to waste.
@@TheBleggh Also telling miles how to use his palms not just finger tips, when they tell everyone to go into portal he grabs on miles saying we both don't listen to rules just so many lil hints of him backing miles even tho he never actual met him before just heard all the hate people talked about him.
I didn’t notice until a second rewatch, but near the end Miles’ common red jacket is actually purple, which alongside the color of the world being different, is another indicator he’s in the wrong universe. What an amazing twist, and such a great cliffhanger ending to a movie.
Watched as of yesterday, I felt weird about the colours of the city. The greens weren’t present in the first movie, it’s was mainly purples, reds and blues. Interesting how much details they put into this movie!!!
There are many indicators that he's in the wrong universe. But we're so focus the first time in the action and dialogue that we pass through those signs until it's too late. Such wonderful work fr.
for me, the giveaway was when Miles' mom asks what he did with his hair, because he'd always had his hair like that. Then we found out that world's Miles had braids instead
@@gracecalis5421 oh no, does this line forshadow the fact, that he was cool the whole time? Like that his advices, that Miles was ignoring at first, were actually solid? I just can't, how many more details can you incorporate in every single line, gods.
I think the issue that got rid of the universe Miguel went to wasn't the lack of canon event, but the fact he tried to replace someone that died there. Miles only works in 1610 because hes not a Peter replacing a Peter, he's a Miles replacing a Peter In the universe where Miguel went, everyone disintegrated, nothing else. But in Paviti's universe, the 'destruction' looked more like The Spot's power than anything.
yeah i cant believe he didnt think of that. like he's saying "if you save someone the world will be destroyed, i know it because i did the same mistake" and then his mistake is him replacing his other self like nothing happened, my guy i love you but that is Not the same thing 💀
And frankly, who’s he to say that 1610 Peter died because of Miles getting bit? From the way the fight was going, he was pushing his limit going against Goblin and Prowler AND trying to stop the collider. How does he know that Miles’s canon event was to replace that Peter?
@@kidzline850 it felt more like a consequence of the spot's use of the collider than reality collapsing! once the dust settled it seemed everything was fine
My biggest complaint is the bloat (which was obviously so they could release it as two films) and that they took "part one" out of the teasers and title.
His animation style, color palette, attitude, dialogue, plot significance... everything screams punk about him. Definitely my fav character in the movie, and that's saying something considering his competition includes Miles, Gwen, and a villain-of-the-week turned eldritch horror with a petty streak
The movie subverts your typical assumptions in all the best ways. Hobie seems like he’s just gonna be a typical rival for Miles in his relationship with Gwen, but ends up being a great friend to him. The spot seems like he’s just gonna be another villain of the week to reintroduce you to Miles but he instead becomes a major threat and the primary antagonist.
If I had a nickel for every multiverse traveling movie in which the bad guys primary motivation involves a bagel I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird it happened twice
@@DevdevOnYT question, the lady that the Spot visits once he starts getting the hang of his dimensional portals is the protagonist of Everything Everywhere, isn't she?
This is what I WANTED Dr. Strange 2 to be. Not a montage of visiting different universes for a few seconds, but seeing how each universe is depicted and represented
Dr. Strange 2 is a good movie, but the marketing and title really overhyped it. This film on the other hand is not only as good as the trailers showed it to be, but it was better.
@Mackie Lunkey I respectfully disagree. You can feel the directors vision for the film way more than in other MCU films and the tone of film, whereas it is kind of a 80s horror movie, is really unique and enjoyable. Despite some plot holes, I truly think it's one of the better movies in phase 4.
I saw this on Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles with a bunch of kids and their parents in the theater, the movie is as the great two cello man said ,everything we could hope for. But for me the greatest thing was this dad and his young son's conversation I caught as they walked by after the movie, he goes " see miho you can be anything, even spider man" and the kid was smiling the biggest smile and it just made me think of this beautiful connection between art and love.
What makes me tear up about that conversation is that’s what Miles says at the end of Into The Spider-Verse. That anyone can wear the mask and it was also what Stan Lee said, anyone even kids see Spider-Man’s costume covers head to toe so anyone can see themselves being Spider-Man
The spidertask force against Miles is also kinda meta since people have also been calling Miles a mistake or unnecessary. This movie feels like the biggest middle finger to those people and showed them why he is spider man. Overall its just a really good movie with the bonus of having extra layers if you know how meta it is
it also ties in so well with the major theme of identity if you view it through the lens of him being a mixed kid. so many mixed kids feel isolated because of their identity (not being able to fully fit in with both parts of their identity, which is similar to miles juggling his Spiderman life and his family life), and the spider task force actively represents the people that invalidate Miles’s existence. the big theme of identity is amazing because it works as such a broad allegory that mixed people, trans people, and pretty much EVERYONE can find something to relate to in Miles (and Gwen).
@@TipoIrritableyea there’s no way in hell a single Spider-Man could out flee a task force that lives there unless it was like cosmic Spider-Man or something
@@romeokukita277yeah the only reason miles could escape is because he was constantly in danger, so his spider sense was activated but no-one elses was. That meant miles automatically had an advantage.
Hoobie Brown is probably the healthiest portrayal of Anarchy I've seen in Media so far and the one character I resignated with. I'm sure other anarchists will disagree with me but Anarchy hates Anarchy I absolutely adore his art style
I'd argue his anarchist tendencies being played for laughs is the point though, no one reads him as a threat. He's feeding ideas to Miles that something ain't right, while simultaneously ripping up electronics, seemingly with the justification that "oh Hobie hates authority, he just does that, don't worry about him". He then ends up instigating Miles into escaping and making his own multiverse watch. Unrelated to my previous point but i love from from an art style perspective, every time he was on screen his chaotic colour changes and lack of fitting into almost any scene was distracting, almost like he's stealing your attention.
Rewatching the movie I did realise how much of his character isn't just vaguely anarchistic one-liners but he's also really the one Spider-person who's really rejecting Miguel. First trying to stop Miles diving into the Spider-society and then actually the person who helps him escape.
I love how Spider-man India said "I can do both" right as captain Stacy was about to die just as Miles said "I can do both" learning that his father had to die
i know this comment is old but my personal theory is when pavitr said "i can do both" when he actually cant, miles was there to make it come true. and now miles said he can do both, he probably cant, but now we have another miles to make it come true.
This is a sequel done right. This is how you do use the multiverse correctly. Across the Spider-Verse is just perfect in my book. My only complain is that it ends.
Agreed, even the things you might think are wrong with it, like the third act’s difficulty of trying to find a good cliffhanger, make sense on a rewatch, since the last few minutes consist of a parallel editing sequence that would feel abrupt if it ended too early.
I love how this movie handles the evolution of Miles and Gwen's relationship. From the moment they meet up again, they click so well. If anything, it's the emotions that make me care about it. The film makes it clear they both like one another, but I appreciate that it shows how insecure Miles feels- but how scared Gwen is to be with Miles or, better yet (take that leap of faith). Despite that, I love how Gwen wants to believe it'll work out. Like Miles said, "Well, there's a first time for everything, right?" A sense of comfort. As she said, "It's all possible." Miles always gave her that. I can't wait to see what's next!
The chemistry between Miles and Gwen is insane. I wanted nothing more than for them to end up happy together. The “and in every universe, it doesn’t end well” is such a heartbreaking line.
@@lukerose4166 It really is a heartbreaking line. One detail I like is when Gwen is in Miles's room. Miles talks about how her hair is pinker. That very same detail is shown as she wanders around his room. It gets brighter and brighter- showcasing her feelings for him.
@@v10fc92 I would love that too, but they are still from different universes, and without the gadgets they can't stay together without their molecular structure just collapsing. I wonder if they will solve that problem, or if that's the "it doesn't end well" part of the equation.
This film made me outright gasp multiple times, which rarely happens in any film. Legitimately, when The Spot saying that his origin story included being hit by a bagel (one of my favorite scenes from the first movie) and the big reveal as to what universe Miles ended up in made were things I knew I wanted before they happened, but never really expected to see. It was a true joy to watch Gwen's story play out in some of the best shot and animated scenes I can remember seeing, and watching the sheer creativity on display throughout this movie was a true delight. Never been so glad to see a movie in IMAX - worth every penny.
I love how in the third act, the movie absolutely bombards you with masterful sequence after masterful sequence. First, it was the scene where Miles goes into the clock tower to and up the train to escape Miguel (and that callback to the “Leap of Faith” scene with Miles breaking the glass was chef’s kiss). Then there was the Miles/Miguel manhunt that uses parallel editing, and it reminded me so much of Silence of the Lambs. And last but not least, the reveal of Earth-42 and what happened in it while it was happening. It may feel like it’s trying to find a good cliffhanger on first viewing, but all the scenes are important for it so that it doesn’t feel abrupt.
@@TheBleggh Same, but I did them on large format screens (still great though). It was immaculate, and I don’t even mind waiting for Beyond probably 2 years from now (because of the WGA strike).
Some got disappointed by how the movie ended, but when I saw that ending I was squirming in my seat. And it was genuine too! Mostly due to the fact that the previous Spider-Verse group is teaming up with the new ones has me pumped! Also, seeing Noir at the end made me say “OH SH*T”. I didn’t think I would say that in the moment, but I am just THAT excited for the third film!
A little note to how Miguel was wrong about the canon events in the movie. The canon event that Miles stopped in Pavs universe was “a police captain being crushed by falling debris during a battle with an arch nemesis.” Well Spot isn’t Spiderman India’s nemesis, he’s Miles’. I feel like this is just a little note about how Miguel was mistaken for how the canon events play out and how they effect the multiverse. Also if I know the writers I feel like the way they’ll tie all of this back together is Spiderman India is gonna swing through and save Jeff Morales during the final battle in Miles’ universe.
Oh, what a fantastic point! I missed that, but you're right: Spot even emphasizes that Miles is the only Spiderman he cares about. He doesn't view anyone else as his nemesis!
Man I love this movie so much. The way it looks and the story they’re telling is incredible. Using a meta reasoning as to why people don’t like miles and personifying that into Miguel is genius. Then flipping it to be the thing he has to overcome is incredible and proved why miles deserves to be spider-man more than anyone else
Not only do they take jabs at the fanbase over the Miles debate, they take jabs at the editorial through the “Canon Event” concept. It’s South Park-esque in a way, but with less mean-spiritedness and more thought being put into how it affects the story and the questions raised in the universe(s) of the movie than how much comedic mileage the writers could get from it.
I loved that so much. The stuff Miguel said to Miles is the stuff I've seen so many people say, that he's not really Spider-Man and could never be, that he's undeserving of that role. It was such a powerful scene in such a powerful movie
@@Gamfluent I assure you I've seen tons of people react to him the same way they react to Sam Wilson as captain America, if not worse. At least Falcon was his own character in the first place, whereas people just see Miles Morales as a token that was created for the sake of trying to replace Peter. Before Spider-verse came out he was not very popular and not liked much at all by most people... So what Miguel said sort of addresses that
@@Gamfluent John Walker was better ? You mean the unhinged guy who straight up decapitated some guy, got beaten by pretty much any enemy he encountered and took the serum just to be able to hold his own? Look you don't have to like Falcon but somebody had to become Captain America after Steve's death and it was either Bucky or Sam, which honestly Bucky was already considered a criminal so it was probably not gonna work out
Miles vs all those other spidermen I think is actually Miles vs nihilism. All these spiders actively allowing these ‘canon’ events giving into notions of fate and predestination makes miles journey to try something new so powerful
That's not what nihilism is. Nihilism is the belief that nothing has meaning. The Spider-Society's whole thing is maintaining the integrity of the multiverse. If they were nihilists, they wouldn't think the multiverse was worth saving.
This movie is an easy contender for greatest Spider-Man anything. Every aspect of the movie was phenomenal and just seeing pretty much everything spidey in one film while having plot relvance was chefs kiss
I am a person who has spent every day of his life consuming content and very very few things make me go “this is the best thing I’ve ever seen” and into and across both did that for me
I love how the whole movie, everyone is trying to tell Miles what he is supposed to do because he’s an “anomaly” and if he doesn’t stick to the canon it would break universes, yet when he met Peter B in the first movie he was able to change Peter’s outlook on children which led to Pete and MJ making up and then having Mayday. Which in turn shouldn’t have been canon for Peter B, but with our Miles being Spider-Man, he changed the canon and led to a new canon. So I still feel that Miguel’s belief in the canon argument isn’t 100% correct. Miles is such an amazing character and these movies really highlight it. Definitely my favorite Spider-Man. “Nah, imma do my own thing” really hits home, and is right up there with his leap of faith scene from the first movie
The question is, if miles from earth 1610 was never meant to be spiderman, then why did it happen? You know? That's why I think Miguel is wrong. If Miles was never meant to be spiderman, he would have never been spiderman.
I loved how it was a giant middle finger to people who feel like an adaptation needs to be lock-step with canon all the time and just drains the creativity out of a project. Hell, look at how people are acting about the new TMNT movie. Most people seem to love the look of it but there are people who are pissed because it's not exactly like the original show, or the 90s movie, or even the original comic that was a parody of the kinds of gritty shows they want! And that's not even going into the response to April...
True that’s the point with adapting from a source material. Each person should be able to add and remove aspects in order to make their own footprint in the franchise.
As a message it's not one I disagree with but as a meta-reading of the framchise I guess I find it odd? There has never been a lock-step adaptation of Spider-man, and most on screen adaptations take more from each other or even Ultimate Spider-man more than they do the mainline comics. As a statement it strikes me as redundant. But maybe that's the point and that the mainstream perception of Spider-man is more of a 'trutherism' than true, just as in-universe the Spidey Society is misunderstanding the nature of the universal collapse. It also raises the question of why exactly some Spider-people or stories are accepted and some receive more pushback.
I honestly cried watching Gwen reconcile with her father and the way the colors of Gwen's world changed to a calm, bright palette really stuck with me. Her whole dimension was the standout for me.
The best way to explain the canon points plot (and why Miguel protects this canon so much) is probably watch a Doctor Who episode where The Doctor ends up in a fixed point in time (The Waters of Mars, for example, which features a future 'canon' event that can't be altered), or The Fires of Pompeii (where The Doctor ends up in the eruption of the volcano). As a long time fan of both Spiderverse (in any media) and Doctor Who (in any media), that was how I understood Miguel's point of view and why he's not a villain, but an antagonist. Also, funfact, Hobie/Spider-Punk is the character that took the most time to animate (and the one where the animators went absolutely bonkers, inspired in the style of old punk magazines). I love Spider-Punk in the movie AND in the comics, give them a chance if you can! He reminds me a bit of Spider-Noir too because my boys kick nazi heads on the daily.
Hobie originally being the Prowler because of his lack of self-esteem makes Spider Hobie’s backstory more heartwarming. He’s able to use his anger against the world to empathize with and help other people like Miles.
Miguel strikes me as the watcher Spider-Man, he's had to essentially become the multiversal guardian and has become (as far as he thinks) completely appraised to what you can and cannot mess with and that has happened to him the hard way. When you consider his origin is someone whom was tricked into becoming an addict and genetically altered himself into something in an attempt to overcome his addictions his staunch and uncompromising positions take a but more of a sombre tone when you realise he is very more fearing a relapse (in this case a complete universal breakdown). The references to Doctor who are perfectly valid and really help us understand the dilemma this Spider-man has and also helps us realise that out of all the spider people there is is the most tired. He doesn't make jokes, he doesn't smile, he just does his job because honestly what else has he got?
@@scapegoatcomics6168 I completely agree with you! That's why the movie was so interesting, because it managed to, somehow, not have a villain (apart from The Spot who's not the main focus in ATSV, since he definitely is going to be in BTSV), but two opposite forces clashing. We understand Miles and where he's coming from, but we also understand Miguel's point of view, and we also empathize with him and get where he is coming from. The storytelling they managed to did with the multiverse dynamic is absolutely fantastic.
But Miles changed Peter B Parkers universe by making him want kids. He would haven't of done that without him. He also made Gwen find friends (her band) which we don't know would have happened without him. We also don't know what affect he had on the others. In any way, PBP universe was a change that should have disrupted/added a canon event that shouldn't have been. He also being bitten should have disrupted canon events in his universe, many of them, and yet it's still going strong. And universe 42, where the spider came from, why isn't it gone? It now has no spider-man where there should be one. So pretty sure all those canon events have been disrupted. His theory doesn't make sense. He is forcing them to do what the TVA did in Loki (if you have watched it).
@@Schnipps That's exactly why I compared it to fixed points in time in DW. The Doctor has disrupted “canon events”/fixed points in time more than once, even when we knows they're supposed to be fixed. I'm not saying Miguel is right, not at all, I'm saying that Miguel, like The Doctor all the way up to The Waters of Mars, thinks he's doing the right thing/thinks he knows more than the rest. And he's probably gonna face the consequences of his choices in BTSV like The Doctor had to face Adelaide in the end of that episode.
I can't praise the art direction in this movie enough. The moment Miles landed in that other universe I knew that it wasn't his because the style and color was completely off from Miles' blue toned calm New York. It was such a brilliant move to give each and every universe that unique spark to distinguish them.
Lots of Spider-Man stories explore the struggle of mantaining a secret identity, but I appreciate how this movie shows that from the perspective of the people being lied to. You really empathize with Jefferson and Rio, how they know their son is lying to them about something and can't help but wonder if it's their fault. Like you said, Miles' strength comes from his familiar relationships, so this dynamic is simply not sustainable.
Agreed. They have the perfect actor, now we just need a good script. I'd love to see a Proper Miggy movie, as this variant is drastically different from the source in quite a few ways.
@@RenjiAbarai777 exactly. for instance, the fact that Miguel has a family. i don't recall Miguel having a daughter with Dana. Nueva York is also a hyper advanced, peaceful city when in the source material it's way darker and unkind.
@@dramatictiming i doubt it. Miguel is by all means an aggressive and snappy Spider-Man, but in no sense of the word is he evil. even in the comics Miguel is dedicated to the overall objective that creates success and survival for all rather than his own self-serving ideals.
Another thing about spot in the movie is that spot actually kind of mirrors miles's journey in learning his powers, which pushes more of how they did create each other in a way
My favorite quote from Hobie when the entire city of Mubattan is falling, Hobie just says “That’s a metaphor for Capitalism” This is one of those movies that both parents and kids can enjoy
Think it should be made clear that Arcane's painter like aesthetic wasn't derived from Spider-Verse as it was being worked on for many years before ITSV came out. Obviously Arcane came out 3 years after ITSV so I'm sure there was some impact, but Arcane found it's style on it's own thanks to the brilliant studio Fortiche who toiled away for years to perfect Arcane. No hate just feel like we should be giving props to Fortiche for somewhat independently arriving to a similarly brilliant methodology of combining 2d and 3d animation.
yeah you could already see the excellent visual style from their 2013 "get jinxed" music video. a lot of different studios were working incredibly hard in developing banger engines for stylized animation during the 2010's, and it's great that we finally get to experience the results all at once.
What I loved the most about Spider-Punk is that the movie presents him as always having this suspicion of Miguel and the Society. Like there's always been underlying mistrust there so when Miles fights against the Society to save his dad, Punk's like "yeah I'm out."
The twist about Miles’ spider bite honestly made him into my favorite interaction of Spider-Man, even more than Peter Parker. They already showcase him struggling with his life balance in classic Spider fashion, but then showcasing that he wasn’t even supposed to be the one to get the powers in the first place just gives him such an interesting struggle to deal with. Miles is told he doesn’t belong. He was a mistake and his very existence is destined to be an anomaly from the rest of the ‘real’ spider people. But Miles carves his own path. If he doesn’t belong with them, then he’ll just make his own seat at the table and fight toward what he believes is right. Nice to see that Hobie sort of helped inspire him to go against what he’s ‘supposed’ to be and become what he actually wants to be
One aspect of the story that touched me was the theme of coming out. Miles and Gwen struggle through the movie with their families relationship with Miles fearing that he won't be accepted and Gwen living that. One of my biggest fears when I was confronting my own sexuality as I grew was not knowing if I would be accepted or not and one of miles line is asking his mom that nothing would change between them. That hit me like a truck and I love how they used the identity of spiderman as an allegory for being different enough to where you have that fear, be it your sexuality, gender, or passion in life.
this!! not to mention the trans coding for gwen. nothing was confirmed but with the trans patch on her dads jacket, the flag in her room, and the color palette briefly being the trans flag colors during her big speech to the dad, it definitely felt intentional to me
I also loved the subversion why Miles was scared of coming out as Spider-Man. He’s scared of the rejection from his parents. Not because of the villains that could physically attack his family if he did like in other Spider-Man movies, just the sheer pain he’s afraid to cause emotionally after keeping that secret for so long. It feels much more personal, and it’s really easy to emphasize with everybody in that conflict because of that. I also love this little shot in his notebook showing how he could take care of the baddies easily in his universe through a single punch, and then match cuts to him unable to beat Spot.
@@Gamfluent 1. thanks for not answering my question, proving your argument has no foundation! 2. trans and gender nonconforming people have been around for centuries. people are only coming out a lot nowadays because its less stigmatized. kindly properly educate yourself and stop being a bigot and getting mad about fictional characters being queer coded. have a great day ❤️🏳️⚧️
I was noticing Gwen was taking up a lot of space in the posters leading up to the release... and I'm so glad she had a bigger part in the movie. I was almost crying during the first drum scene. The art was peak animation it shows why you'd use animation it had so much life but the music adds so much as well I can't this movie- 😭😭
The first movie changed the way I look at animation, storytelling, and film in general. And the fact that the second movie managed to give me that same feeling again is something I'm still trying to process.
Something I really like about Spot is that when we first meet him he hasn’t reached is full potential and doesn’t really have control over his own power, and they represented this unfinishedness by drawing him with construction lines. You can see the shapes that were used to fill out and define his shape
With the whole "police captain needing to die" as part of the canon, in a figurative sense it happens with Gwen. Her being Spider-woman and having to tell her dad and confront him with that reality, and then leaving him "kills" the captain. The next time she sees him, he's changed and has come to accept her reality and quits being a police officer. So "Captain Stacy" was figuratively killed and was replaced with "Dad Stacy". Her breaking ties with her dad still serves as a traumatic event with him being "dead" to her and no longer having a sense of family.
Nothing would ever make me more engaged in a movie than the Spider-Man movies, with Spider-Verse being the peak of my interests that I never expect the magic of it to boost my sensory overload
This movie is just perfect for me, and honestly cements Miles as THE Spider-Man for me. There are so many different Spider-Men from across different periods of time, and people connect to certain Spider-man more then others. Miles just hit every beat so well cementing him as my favorite Spider-Man. Also Hobie was absolutely not someone I expected to like. At the start I wasn't too into the character, but realizing that he was actually helping Miles and even teaches him to better use his powers was a great moment. It also goes to show that not all Spider-Men agree with Miguel's way of thinking.
Did anyone catch how Jessica is pregnant for like WAY to long ? When she meets Gwen she says she’s 9 months in. Then after Gwen meets up with miles we find out that Gwen has been on the task force for a few months already.
While I can't speak on Indian representation. Pavitr was an awesome inclusion, and his friendship with Hobee was great, and his presence was great as his commentary provided humor but didn't detract from his ability to be Spiderman. Miles found a Spiderman who sees the world around him, and after going through hell still has the ability to function with a smile. (Doesnt mean that his way is the healthiest but Pavitr lays the groundwork for a Spiderman franchise that can expand beyond Miles). Unrelated but Gayarti's father was a Sikh, can't comment on representation but given the various elements they were able to incorporate the creators can make a compelling Pavitr centered movie that addresses a variety of social issues, history of oppression/ violence, and how young people are supposed to balance generational trauma while forming their own identities.
Some aspects of this movie gave me big Gumball energy (in the BEST way) and I totally saw Spot as Rob. Specifically from their character motivations: the desire to be the main character's arch-nemesis, to be taken seriously, and to destroy everything the protagonist loves. The origins of their current deformed selves (accidentally created from the ignorance of the protagonists) is also similar. Both also had a relationship to a weird meta-void, and were originally kind of a joke before becoming a serious antagonist. Even their voices and the way they carry themselves also felt a little similar. I have no Spiderman background (except for the Disney XD series) so perhaps this is a stretch, but I thought the similarities were an interesting coincidence.
This really makes me wish that this movie came out during my High School years because of now I really relate to Miles more than I never thought of before. Miles journey to reach his full potential and the need of support from his family in order to reach that potential is something that I wished I could've have before.
i loved how we were expecting a love triangle, but actually Hobie is instantly supportive of Miles. The moment he literally tells him how to escape made me fall in love with his character even more so. Helps that 1 I love classic punk, and 2 adore his art style. He truly wants the Spidey's to live their lives, and I like to think he only joined simply to help out, but instantly disagreed with Miguel's more controlling ways. Not trusting the person in charge is obviously in his character, but its clearly he was already at odds with Miguel when Miles showed up, likely as a result of finding out his beliefs about Miles and the canon. And whilst Jess was less developed, I think that could've taken away from Gwen, Miles and our other key Spider people. So I don't mind that, assuming she gets more development in the finale. Also, Gwen was a very enjoyable side character in the first film, with a wholesome relationship with Miles and simple and pleasant character arc. In this one... Jesus. Miles was amazing, but Gwen was also. I dont even wanna call her the perfect deuteragonist, because she simply felt like the other main character, which was unexpected but brilliant. She has to be one of my all time favourite renditions of a Spidey now. In many ways she took the place of Peter in the first film, whose character arc intrinsically linked with Miles was absolutely a highlight of the film. Also, they made her funny. She has some of the best quips and best action in the film!
This movie is worth the rewatch just for the visuals. They exceeded every expectation. Even that iconic shot of Miles “falling” is surpassed IMO by Miles and Gwen sitting on the skyscraper !
When they first introduced Hobie, my first thought was "Holy shit please don't tell me they do the jealousy crap all movie", but I think they moved on from it quickly enough to make him more than just a rival.
i love Miguel. he's the best represented Spider-Man in my opinion, in fact his story is also the most drastically affected by Miles. hoping for more development of him.
Agreed on Spider-Punk and Gwen's story, I saw the movie and loved it but only one thing bugged me. Young people loudly making complaints about the ending behind me. Yeeah. But yeah I enjoyed the movie regardless and I loved how Miles earns the respect of Spider-Punk and Spider-Man India through his actions.
And I love how despite the damage Miles caused by disrupting a canon event, Hobie understands that there’s something wrong that isn’t caused by Miles. I find Spider-Verse’s take on Hobie Brown to be quite nuanced, since in the original comics, he had a lack of self-esteem that led him to have a skewed perspective on life and into villainy as the Prowler. Here, he has a more grounded view of the world, and he’s able to see things as they truly are because of the self-esteem that he had gained.
I love how he was able to explain why the ending worked and the movie still felt complete. A lot of people are saying this felt like half a movie and I never understood that because both miles and gwen have FULL arcs beginning to end. Not every plot point is gonna be resolved because it is still a part one but that by no means stops the movie from standing on its own as a complete experience. Cliffhanger ≠ unfinished.
The ending sucks as now we have to wait like 9 months, but at least it's only 9 months and not 6 years. Other than that 10/10 movie, best I've seen in my entire life
Personally I wish I knew it would end on a cliffhanger going into the film. It annoyed me but only because I was so invested in the story that I want to see how it ends.
I can’t wait to see what happens when Gwen and Pete see Miles again. When he looked at them and said “you knew?” Dude… I felt like someone punched me in the stomach.
2:12 really thought he was going to say especially fun since a 14yr old animated that part of the film, he's very talented and because recreated the trailor for the movie in the lego style the people working on the film were so impressed upon seeing it they reached out to his parents asking if he'd be willing to work on a segment for the official release. Also when Miguel tells lego spiderman "you're one of our best" that hits different knowing this since it could be indirectly referring to the 14yr old and the potential he has if he pursues his passion in the animation industry.
Fantastic video Johnny but i wish you would have talked about the score a bit. Im not a big music person so forgive me if my terminology or explanations are very messy but I absolutely love the way certain instruments or tones belong to certain characters such as how Gwen is the strings to represent her ballerina background wheras vulture italian opera and how the score pits theae two things together creating a beautifully genre clash or how the spot's various themes go from a distorted wailing to capture the agony he goes through from his transformation and likely the irksome troubles his body gives him with normal day to day life before it becomes a horrifying threatening score to encapsulate what hes capable of as well as thr source of his own suffering. I cant remember the last time I really noticed and appreciated a score in a current movie besides the first Spider-Verse film but like with the animation I think its really amped up here! Anyway I hope you have a good day and thanks for the spectacular video!
I also love the use of drums as a rather obvious nod to gwen’s instrument whenever she’s around, hobie’s rock themes, and even the use of more latino hip hop for miles. Its such a wonder elaboration on the styles and backgrounds of each character.
The deafening drum intro for gwen was amazing I loved how they themed each character. The score tracks "vulture meets culture" and "guggenheim assault" had me genuinely hooked the clash of themes is just so pleasing. I just wish we had more of miles whistling theme? or whatever they used during Visions in the first movie. That track that plays when miles is swinging home also stuck out to me it was really powerful. All the other tracks definitely painted the universe too
So between this movie and Everything Everywhere All at Once it seems we’ve all decided bagels are a constant part of the most compelling multiverse stories
I think that the bootleg dimension hopper was originally for Miles cause of the questions he asks him while grabbing tech but the chase happened so he gave it to Gwen
THANK YOU! seriously, thank you SO MUCH for being the only male commentator i have come across that is not hung up on the “overwhelming wokeness” of this movie instead of the breathtaking art direction and outstanding character work/writing! i genuinely appreciate being able to sit and watch a review of this movie without being reminded that some people’s hate of miscellaneous details is stronger than their love for a masterful piece of art that such an amazing staff put their hearts and souls into ❤️
Honestly, if a TH-camr starts talking about “wokeness” then I pretty much just stop watching their stuff. This is why I stopped watching “the critical drinker”.
They’re so used to all media catering to cis white males, that any depiction that doesn’t, no matter how compelling, becomes an attack on their existence. It’s frankly pathetic, and only makes this love this series more
Another thing interesting about the spots backstory is that during the flash back of the spider him and octavious took from earth 42 is that it was right behind the miles it was meant to bite before they took it from that universe.
This is probably the best video I've seen review this movie. I like how you were actually capable of treating this movie as a complete story in its own right. A lot of people said this was half a movie, or that it felt incomplete, despite our two main characters literally having full arcs beginning to end.
i love how this movie shows so many character arcs to which different people can relate. They're not just introducing characters to help the story of Miles, they write a complete story for each of them.
I loved this movie, thought the theater I saw it in had the very public audio issues, so I only caught like 60-70% of the dialogue. The fact that I found the film as affecting as it was without being able to hear a good chunk of what the characters were saying is a MASSIVE point in its favor.
Gwen told miles it never works out between Spider-Man and Gwen Stacy, which I’m guessing she meant literally, we didn’t know it but she most likely saw the other universes. Meaning her love with miles breaks the canon as well
What I like about the end is that it isn’t a “twist.” There are so many signs that Miles is in the wrong universe, yet because the scene before was so tense, a lot of people didn’t notice the signs. Great movie.
And I really appreciate it because it still works great if the viewer does catch on. My eyes were glued to the fact that oh no it says 42 when the go home machine booted up, so I spent that entire time enjoying the tense thriller of waiting for the other shoe to drop while the characters are oblivious to the metaphorical bomb under the chair.
Computer: Earth 42 "Isn't Miles from 1610?" Miles' Mom: **has green eyes** "Something feels different about Rio" Uncle Aaron: **exists** "Wait I think Miles might be in a different universe..."
@@captainsprinkles6557 I like the idea that someone sees Uncle Aaron and is still just like, “Hmm, maybe he is in the wrong universe… maybe not though…”
I fucking loved this movie. Thank you for reviewing this movie as a complete story. I was kinda surprised how many people were lukewarm about the story saying it’s incomplete. I think yeah obviously there’s a cliff hanger but that doesn’t mean there’s a satisfying conclusion. ESPECIALLY with Gwen’s story. I think Miles will always be my favorite because of his conflict with expectations and identity and I can’t wait to see what they do with him in the next movie. March can’t come soon enough!
Thank you! Cliffhanger≠incomplete. I also thought the movie still had a satisfying conclusion. Some ppl were saying that miles doesn't have a complete arc which is also untrue. I think those people need to watch this video, I think it might put things in perspective for them
A common motif in Into the Spider-Verse was the idea of Expectations, it's a subtle motif but definitely consistent. I didn't realize until watching some tiktoks about it but Across the Spider-Verse DOES have a thematic motif as well, I just didn't notice at first. It's the idea of "doing both". It's a classic Spider-Man theme of wanting to both be Spider-Man and also have a normal life. It's displayed in a very typical fashion with Miles trying to fight the Spot and text his dad. The counsellor says something about Miles wanting to have his cake and eat it too and Miles comes in and says "unless you have two cakes" but then he shows up to his dad's party with two cakes and both cakes are fucked up because he was trying to do both. Miles wants to be Spider-Man and not have to sacrifice the people Spiderman always has to sacrifice. But it's also shown with other characters! Pavitr says "I can do both" when he wants to save his GF and the inspector... but he can't. Gwen said "I was trying to do both" when she was referencing protecting the canon (moreso following Miguels rules so she can stay a part of his society) and saving Miles' life (I believe that because she got the warning beforehand she believed that if he interfered he would die). And of course Miles' speech to Miguel and the other spideys saying "I can do both, Spiderman always does-" and him being cut off with "Not always." Because realistically... Spiderman rarely ever gets to do both.
There is actually a little bit of sneaky foreshadowing that Miles shouldn’t be the spider man in his own version of earth earlier in the film prior to the reveal that I haven’t seen many people point out. If you look closely at what Miles is wearing in the scene when Gwen first enters his world to visit him, you can see that the text on his shirt says “Brooklyn 42.” The number of the earth that Miles was “supposed” to be the spider man in. And this is way before it is revealed that Miles is an anomaly!
Also when Spot is giving his backstory and talking about the spider, we actually see Miles 42 when they're talking about the spider but it's a blink and you'll you miss it frame and I only caught it on my second viewing of the film.
It’s so nice to see a Spiderman they let grow up and get on with his life. In every other movie we have seen, it’s always about his origin and he’s a kid with a lot of responsibilities.
U are right about Miles being confident, I mean he literally said to Miguel “nah Imma do my own thing.” This shows that Miles will do whatever takes to save the people that he loves and he doesn’t care what Miguel says about him Miles knows he’s spider man because he took that leap of faith and went beyond the call of duty to stop the collider. All he needed was confidence, and he’s got it! That’s what’s awesome about Miles, the sense of confidence and hope.
I honestly forgot that the Spot was in the ‘94 animated series!! He was genuinely one of my favorite characters from that series and I felt sorry for him. And again, in the movie, I felt sorry for him and what happened to at first, by the end tho, I was completely terrified of him. I’m very hopeful they’ll be able to stop him in the 3rd movie!!😳
It was just a good movie. i feel like the couldn't do anything to make it better it was so good. i wish we had more time with the movie so we could see more of everything.
I think the "traffic joke" is not that heavily influenced by a miss representation of indian culture. Is like a complementary observation of "Can you imagine if Mumbai and Manhattan had the exact same traffic at the exact same time?"
No it was a joke about India specifically didnt rub me wrong cuz an indian person was making the observation that and traffic exists literally everywhere
It was more like a soft jab. Plus it was meant to be ridiculous. It's literally showing how Peter Parker's story is so played out now that it's a template you can slot into anywhere.
There's an interview with the VA saying he came up with that joke so I'm shocked people are offended by it because it's 'stereotypical'. Bro he's literally Indian.
I don’t regret going to the cinema to watch the film on Saturday (10th June), it was a great experience seeing how much miles, Gwen and Peter had changed since ITSV, and Miguel’s story was very emotionally resonant. I liked Pavitar and Hobie in this movie as well, they had small parts in the film, but their personalities made them highlights.
I've seen this the movie 5 times with many more planned. When not in the movie theater, I'm listening to the score or watching TH-cam videos about it. Your video is my favorite out of the 50+ I've watched about Across the Spider-Verse. You brought up points I hadn't really thought about and made me appreciate it even more, which I didn't think was possible. Thanks for the time and effort you put into making a great video!
The way i was absolutely geeking out over Hobie's character design. Halfway through Hobie's screen time i realized Hobie's entire art style is inspired by the post modernist punk art movement. Hobie visual embodies the punk movement. Its not a detail that most casual viewers would notice, but like so many other aspects of this masterpiece of a movie, its such a fun detail to pick up on if you just know little bit more about the material. I also really really enjoyed when Rio and Miles spoke in Spanish and it WASNT translated. As a Spanish speaker it felt like a lil bonus, being able to understand a few extra lines of dialouge.
I believe the reason why Spider-punk is so nice to Gwen is becauses in his world Gwen Stacy is a Popular Rockstar and was a fan of her (or during the time skip they just got to know each other).
19:31 I just realized a HUGE clue towards Gwen’s story being a trans allegory. Her father cannot accept her identify because he believes that she killed Peter, someone close to the captain too. As a trans man, I know how that feels on Gwen’a end-to have a loved one be convinced you killed someone when you didn’t. The end scene between Gwen and her father really hit home hard. She was trying to convince her father that she didn’t kill Peter, but he’s gone regardless and her father can either choose to keep his false belief, or accept the truth and move on in life with his daughter.
One thing that I think is worth mentioning is the lack of a post credit scene. In the original it teased 2099 and the further expansion of the universes. But the lack of one in. This movie is bold and unique especially given the nature of comic book movies in this time. It’s almost like a clear message saying “this movie set up what’s coming so perfectly it doesn’t need a tease.”
i saw a lot people disliking Gwen after this movie, and although her actions were a massive punch to Miles, I only grew more respect for her character. Seeing her talk to her father near the end made me emotional, and Gwen creating a team to help Miles just made me like Gwen's character even more.
Also, speaking of The Spot, he actually reminds me a lot of Angstrom Levy from Invincible. They both have dimension hopping abilities and both have a sworn hatred of their self proclaimed nemesis after they accidentally ruined their lives while stopping a bad guy. They’re also both terrifying as HELL once they get a handle on their abilities and use their hatred as fuel for their actions
I'm Indian, and I loved Mumbattan. I Stray dogs, mind boggling traffic, tea, and Wada Pav is literally Mumbai in a nutshell (been there like 20 times, live very close by)
This movie blew my mind with how amazing its visuals, story, and characters were! I love seeing Gwens backstory with Peter, i adore Mayday (so damn adorable), Hobie was a real stand out- didnt expect to end up loving him with him seeming to be between Miles and Gwen at first. I saw this day 1 it was out in a packed room and im so glad i did. And i shall be going back this weekend to see it again and im making sure every damn person i know sees it

When Miles is invited to see Miguel, Spider punk immediately starts collecting the tech for his bootleg dimension watch. He predicted the outcome of the meeting and started preparing to help Miles and Gwen
That’s totally kickass
The more I watch the movie the more I like him
He’s such a G man! Love him
How the hell are people saying they see this movie a lot of times or they gonna see watch it again like do they just go the movie theater 4 times in a row
Dear god where the hell did you kids come from y’all want some cookies or something?
Not to mention how he immediately tried to stop Miles from going to Nueva York in the first place when Jess told them that Miguel wanted to see everyone
@@nickmilano2516 i went to see it for the 3rd time today 🤷🏻♂️
One of my favourite aspects of this movie is that there’s definitely an undertone of miles + Gwen having a crush on eachother, but miles is mostly just genuinely devastated that his friends didn’t come and visit him.
I also love the theme of just how lonely being Spider-Man is. Miles doesn’t have many friends. Gwen has no friends. In the previous movie, Peter B had no relationships, was completely alone. Noir was depressed and alone. Even Penny is shown to be struggling in the new movie.
All they really have is each other, and Miles was deprived of that.
The fact that they’re pretty noticeably into each other instead of one or both of them being in denial is such a breath of fresh air
@BlackKnight-hc8tv Well Miles' sketchpad says otherwise 🤭
I think that’s why it hits so hard when you find out they knew he was not “supposed” to be a spider man. And why Miles felt so betrayed that they didn’t tell him.
it's not really an undertone when spider-man india just flat out says how they are romantically interested in one-another.
Edit: Unless I'm misunderstanding what an undertone is
I love that the movie with more spider men in it than any other movie, is about how alone Miles feels as Spider man.
The film of the year ! 😄
Damn that hit deep
He's not alone but he's feeling lonelier, and I always loved that theme in media. Being surrounded, even by people like you, yet still being lonely
What an amazing twist, and such a great cliffhanger ending to a movie.
i picked it up the second 42 flashed on a monitor when he activated the go home machine.
Watched as of yesterday, I felt weird about the colours of the city. The greens weren’t present in the first movie, it’s was mainly purples, reds and blues. Interesting how much details they put into this movie!!!
Her mom’s eyes were brown, while in the wrong universe her eyes were green
There are many indicators that he's in the wrong universe. But we're so focus the first time in the action and dialogue that we pass through those signs until it's too late. Such wonderful work fr.
for me, the giveaway was when Miles' mom asks what he did with his hair, because he'd always had his hair like that. Then we found out that world's Miles had braids instead
Spider-Punk really surprised me. I went from “Oh he’s pretty cool.” to “He’s so fricking awesome, and I want even more screen time in the next movie.”
Fr!!
Nah he was TOO British for me haha
He's amazing, but his accent is very thick, some scenes were hard to make out his dialogue lol
He's been cool the whole time.
Miles only works in 1610 because hes not a Peter replacing a Peter, he's a Miles replacing a Peter
In the universe where Miguel went, everyone disintegrated, nothing else.
Miguel literally be gaslighting, gatekeeping, and girlbossing 🤣
And frankly, who’s he to say that 1610 Peter died because of Miles getting bit? From the way the fight was going, he was pushing his limit going against Goblin and Prowler AND trying to stop the collider. How does he know that Miles’s canon event was to replace that Peter?
@@metarijThat's not necessarily true because they witnessed India start to fall apart after the save of the chief.

My biggest complaint is the bloat (which was obviously so they could release it as two films) and that they took "part one" out of the teasers and title.
@@Gamfluent Although I love NWH, it's actually very flawed.
I love how Hobie subverts the audience's expectations and doesn't fall in line with the love triangle cliche. It's so Spider-Punk of him.

Multiverse travel? Oh you mean pizza balls and they walk on red? God that movie was trash
Dr. Strange 2 is a good movie, but the marketing and title really overhyped it. This film on the other hand is not only as good as the trailers showed it to be, but it was better.
@Joshua Munnbro we get it 🙃
@@ScofieldStudiosEven if you did ignore the marketing, it’s a below average Marvel movie that ticks the boxes.
Mr. Sunday Movies told a story with a similar vibe when he went to see the first Black Panther film.
What makes me tear up about that conversation is that’s what Miles says at the end of Into The Spider-Verse. That anyone can wear the mask and it was also what Stan Lee said, anyone even kids see Spider-Man’s costume covers head to toe so anyone can see themselves being Spider-Man
got me crying rn
"The spidertask force" Was also pretty nerfed tho.
@@TipoIrritableyea there’s no way in hell a single Spider-Man could out flee a task force that lives there unless it was like cosmic Spider-Man or something

@@Exilefromtomorrownone of the animators who worked on this are capitalists, they're proletariats who work for capitalists (Sony execs).
@@PauLtus_B Also giving him advice that helped him escape.
I love how Spider-man India said "I can do both" right as captain Stacy was about to die just as Miles said "I can do both" learning that his father had to die

Yesssss
i know this comment is old but my personal theory is when pavitr said "i can do both" when he actually cant, miles was there to make it come true. and now miles said he can do both, he probably cant, but now we have another miles to make it come true.
The entire team nailed it on across the spider verse, this film is a set up for the biggest animation movie beyond the spider verse. Hype always
Minus the blatant cliffhanger with no resolution, sure.

Like Miles said, "Well, there's a first time for everything, right?"
A sense of comfort.
Man, hope after all what happened in BTSV, they’ll finally get together 😅
@@v10fc92 I would love that too, but they are still from different universes, and without the gadgets they can't stay together without their molecular structure just collapsing. I wonder if they will solve that problem, or if that's the "it doesn't end well" part of the equation.
@@samuelperezgarcia I'm hoping it's the former icl 😅
This film made me outright gasp multiple times, which rarely happens in any film. Legitimately, when The Spot saying that his origin story included being hit by a bagel (one of my favorite scenes from the first movie) and the big reveal as to what universe Miles ended up in made were things I knew I wanted before they happened, but never really expected to see. It was a true joy to watch Gwen's story play out in some of the best shot and animated scenes I can remember seeing, and watching the sheer creativity on display throughout this movie was a true delight. Never been so glad to see a movie in IMAX - worth every penny.
I actually went back to the theater to go see it in IMAX on a second watch. Don't regret it.
You gotta love how the scene of Gwen hugging her father is like a mirror image of when Miles did so in the first film
Oh, that's so cool ✨
Man I love this movie so much. The way it looks and the story they’re telling is incredible. Using a meta reasoning as to why people don’t like miles and personifying that into Miguel is genius. Then flipping it to be the thing he has to overcome is incredible and proved why miles deserves to be spider-man more than anyone else
Not only do they take jabs at the fanbase over the Miles debate, they take jabs at the editorial through the “Canon Event” concept. It’s South Park-esque in a way, but with less mean-spiritedness and more thought being put into how it affects the story and the questions raised in the universe(s) of the movie than how much comedic mileage the writers could get from it.
so much can be said about this movie, just on character dynamics and story alone. It's actually crazy
John Calvin rolling in his grave rn
That's not what nihilism is. Nihilism is the belief that nothing has meaning. The Spider-Society's whole thing is maintaining the integrity of the multiverse. If they were nihilists, they wouldn't think the multiverse was worth saving.
This movie is an easy contender for greatest Spider-Man anything. Every aspect of the movie was phenomenal and just seeing pretty much everything spidey in one film while having plot relvance was chefs kiss
I am a person who has spent every day of his life consuming content and very very few things make me go “this is the best thing I’ve ever seen” and into and across both did that for me
This movie was like a love letter to us spider man fans
Just like the first one. Easily the two best Spider-Man movies ever.
Love letter? This movie was a sexbomb.
I'm not a big fan of spiderman, I know little about it, but these movies are so fucking good. You know it's good when anyone can enjoy it.
“Nah, imma do my own thing” really hits home, and is right up there with his leap of faith scene from the first movie
miles being spiderman wasnt supposed to happen in the first place which pretty much proves that miguel is wrong
The question is, if miles from earth 1610 was never meant to be spiderman, then why did it happen? You know? That's why I think Miguel is wrong. If Miles was never meant to be spiderman, he would have never been spiderman.
Miles also changed Gwen’s mind in ITSV by convincing her to open up for a friendship.
@@ArianeM-gk2vp also, if there is no spider-man in 42, why is it not gone? all those canon events now not happening
Same
The best way to explain the canon points plot (and why Miguel protects this canon so much) is probably watch a Doctor Who episode where The Doctor ends up in a fixed point in time (The Waters of Mars, for example, which features a future 'canon' event that can't be altered), or The Fires of Pompeii (where The Doctor ends up in the eruption of the volcano).
I hope these filmmakers make a Spider-Man 2099 solo movie as well
Agreed. They have the perfect actor, now we just need a good script. I'd love to see a Proper Miggy movie, as this variant is drastically different from the source in quite a few ways.
we'll see him turn evil lol
I want them to make a Spider-Man Unlimited movie.
I still can’t believe that I overlooked the detail in the first movie where the spider glitched, indicating that it’s from another dimension
I used to think it was just style but even then the glitching felt “too stylized” to just be that
This was such a huge artistic achievement. There's so much passion in every shot and it's such a massive creative triumph
Another thing about spot in the movie is that spot actually kind of mirrors miles's journey in learning his powers, which pushes more of how they did create each other in a way
My favorite quote from Hobie when the entire city of Mubattan is falling, Hobie just says “That’s a metaphor for Capitalism”

YES i totally agree with this
yeah you could already see the excellent visual style from their 2013 "get jinxed" music video. a lot of different studios were working incredibly hard in developing banger engines for stylized animation during the 2010's, and it's great that we finally get to experience the results all at once.
You know what's funny? Hailee steinfeld was a main character in both ATSV and arcane😅
Came here to say the exact same thing. Fortiche is one of the originators, not a derivative.
I also came here to say the same thing, but putting this here anyway to boost it
What I loved the most about Spider-Punk is that the movie presents him as always having this suspicion of Miguel and the Society.
I swear during the scenes when he was about to tell Rio, I half expected Miles to say "I'm gay" lmao it's so blatant I love it
@@Gamfluent did the writers explicitly say this? or is every fictional character supposed to be cis because that is the “default”
Yeah, I thought that in the movie too, also, rob has one big eye on his head, spot has one big hole on his head
Punk rock Spider-Man was a real stand-out in a story full of great characters. He even outshone Mayday Parker.
I was so happy to see that, lol. She’s goddamned HILARIOUS in her comics, it was nice to see her being funny and more than just sarcastic
@@odile8701 agreed! She was great!
Other than that 10/10 movie, best I've seen in my entire life
@@thecreativeducky5781 We might have to wait longer than that, cause writer's strike.
I watched this at a movie theater at midnight and gotta say it’s one of the best movie I’ve seen in a long long geez very long time
Fantastic video Johnny but i wish you would have talked about the score a bit.
Surprisingly, I'm surprised more people haven't talked about this
I think that the bootleg dimension hopper was originally for Miles cause of the questions he asks him while grabbing tech but the chase happened so he gave it to Gwen
THANK YOU! seriously, thank you SO MUCH for being the only male commentator i have come across that is not hung up on the “overwhelming wokeness” of this movie instead of the breathtaking art direction and outstanding character work/writing! i genuinely appreciate being able to sit and watch a review of this movie without being reminded that some people’s hate of miscellaneous details is stronger than their love for a masterful piece of art that such an amazing staff put their hearts and souls into ❤️

Meaning her love with miles breaks the canon as well
Yep she was def referring to her alternate selves dying as a canon event.
This makes me worried for Pavitr girlfriend Gayatri
this movie is my generation's empire strikes back. i'd never thought i would ever get those emotions that people in the 80s felt ever.
Computer: Earth 42
"Isn't Miles from 1610?"
Miles' Mom: **has green eyes**
"Something feels different about Rio"
Uncle Aaron: **exists**
"Wait I think Miles might be in a different universe..."
@@captainsprinkles6557 I like the idea that someone sees Uncle Aaron and is still just like, “Hmm, maybe he is in the wrong universe… maybe not though…”
@@sleepybim "I don't know man..."
The fact that Miles exists in the first place, and his dimension WASN’T destroyed proves that cannon events can be broken.
Yeah the only two examples of the consequences are the one most likely caused by the Spot and the flashback which Miguel might be misunderstanding
@@jefferyandbob3137 I wonder if Miguel was even responsible or a third party was instead that he had no clue about? It would explain a lot more.
Good point, I did notice the number 42 alot but I forgot it was on his fit
I also think the number 42 has already been on the spider that bit him in the first movie.
@@timerertim yeah, I think it was right in the very first scene in the first movie. like damn they really planned this out didn't they
Also when Spot is giving his backstory and talking about the spider, we actually see Miles 42 when they're talking about the spider but it's a blink and you'll you miss it frame and I only caught it on my second viewing of the film.
That’s why there’s a 3rd part😂
This movie hurt my eyes and overstimulated me in every way and I loved every second and will willingly do it again 10x over
I think the "traffic joke" is not that heavily influenced by a miss representation of indian culture.
Yeah in the same scene he even said “And this is where the British stole all of our stuff”
@@moon7shinev150 Which is impressive in a world where India took over Manhattan (and presumably the rest of the US).
Bro I just finished watching your other vid, the timing couldn't be more perfect
Sameeee
I don’t regret going to the cinema to watch the film on Saturday (10th June), it was a great experience seeing how much miles, Gwen and Peter had changed since ITSV, and Miguel’s story was very emotionally resonant.
I liked Pavitar and Hobie in this movie as well, they had small parts in the film, but their personalities made them highlights.
Man, I just watched it yesterday because everywhere I went had spoilers, so I thought might as well watch it before I get officially spoiled.
As a drummer, I can guarantee that we bang on the drums as much as we can and as loud as we can when we are stressed and/or thinking
Producer: What art style should we use for our new movie?
Animators:Yes
There were a LOT of producers and a LOT LOT of animators.
i saw a lot people disliking Gwen after this movie, and although her actions were a massive punch to Miles, I only grew more respect for her character.
They’re also both terrifying as HELL once they get a handle on their abilities and use their hatred as fuel for their actions
i didnt notice till i watched the film a second time, but hobie stealing parts to make gwen a watch was perfect lmao
I'm Indian, and I loved Mumbattan. I
Stray dogs, mind boggling traffic, tea, and Wada Pav is literally Mumbai in a nutshell (been there like 20 times, live very close by)
New Rockstars breaking down all the easter eggs and other things you miss shows the depth of the movie and makes you appreciate the movie more
This movie blew my mind with how amazing its visuals, story, and characters were! I love seeing Gwens backstory with Peter, i adore Mayday (so damn adorable), Hobie was a real stand out- didnt expect to end up loving him with him seeming to be between Miles and Gwen at first. I saw this day 1 it was out in a packed room and im so glad i did. And i shall be going back this weekend to see it again and im making sure every damn person i know sees it
Bruh the Thumbnail looks like Miles and Gwen are doing the "2 Soyjacks pointing" Meme
The score are absolutely heartwrenching like an anime
Sony is two-thirds of the way to the greatest trilogy in superhero/Spider-Man/cinematic history.
The wait to March 29th, 2024 is already excruciating...
Same! I'm so excited!!
I know right. It's gonna be a loooooonnnnnng wait
It might be longer if the rumors are true that Hailee Steinfeld hasn't recorded her dialogue yet.
Love your content sir! listen to the podcast as well! Ive been around for a while and I gotta say you are my favorite youtuber right now. The way you can tell the time and passion that you put in to your scripts is above what a lot of people are doing out there right now! thank you for the content and helping me to look at story lines in new ways that I didnt think of before! please keep up the great work!
Man this year has been good for animation. Mario, Suzume, then this? Crazy
You’re description gave me goosebumps!
The ending hit me so suddenly I didn’t realize 2 hours passed by. I still think the first one was better but I can’t wait for the third!
