  • Welcome to my encaustic art studio in West Virginia. Come along as I experiment a bit more with rice papers. I share my tips for printing on rice paper and then how I embed rice paper into encaustic medium.
The rice paper I'm using came from:

This was really interesting. I have had luck with basic mulberry with the inkjet but the fibers of the paper will come through. It's just easy to use since it can go right through the printer. What I like is how it just melts into the wax. I also tear my edges when I embed and don't cut them. It helps them really melt in better. Thank you for a great tutorial.

Great idea on the torn edges. Thanks for sharing and for watching. 😍

So glad to see your printing/embedding experiment. I've never used any of the papers you tried, but have used (successfully) calligraphy paper and buffered archival tissue paper for printing and embedding. Are you planning on trying to embed any of the gelli prints you made? It would be interesting to see if they cure enough to embed.

I have also used buffered tissue paper to embed into encaustic. It works great. I have not tried calligraphy paper and this might be another great material to use. Thanks for the suggestion. 😍 My initial plan was to embed the geli plate prints. Stay tuned I'll let you know if they ever cure.

I have had trouble with oil bleeding into sumi-e paper from one container of Akua soy based printing ink. The same ink also refused to dry when I used it on top of water-based silk screen paint and acrylic paint.. I've never had the problem you showed us of oil paint refusing to cure. Always interesting to see your experiments and the way you record the results.

Hmm...Not sure why the oil paint won't cure then. Guess more experimenting is needed. Thanks for responding I really appreciate it. 😍

Did you put a small anoint of paint on cardboard or paper towel to let the oil drain off

I did not. Next time I will do that though. Thank you for the suggestion. 🙂

Gosh, I am so lazy. I just tape my paper at a very top edge of the carrier paper and send it through.

I'd day that's efficient, not lazy. 😍 Maybe I should try just taping the top edge.

Why don't you store the paper with the oil between sheets of newspapers and it might absorb the excess oil

Great idea. Thank you. Not sure why I didn't think of this. 😄😍
