I worked as a part time instructor at a private college. They took any student as long as they have the money. They bragged over 90% of their student get jobs out of school. I ran into an old student and he told me the school count ANY job. If they get a minimum job completely unrelated to what they studied, they’d still count it. In reality, hardly any students got a job in the field they studied for. Big scam.

I give up home construction with a crew, to handyman jobs by myself because I can literally pick what hours I want to work, charge what I want and the customer is thrilled with paying $300 just to replace a door knob. Yea they really do take anyone. Most the international students doing their masters that I knew during my studies were so underqualified that a first or second year bachelor's had better knowledge. The funny part is that the school would sometimes make them teacher assistants since they are technically master students lol

It's disgusting that gov allowed this to happen in the first place. No housing no plans just double, triple and more students coming every year. Finally it reached the limit of this madness. Not every student can support their cost of living in Canada, they need put way tighter requirement.

for profit schools love and brag about these students getting jobs in the job market. the government hears all the good stuff from schools but will have to wait years to see the "fruit" of this endeavour, which is where we are now. housing is a by product of this but obviously not enough planning went into all of this, in addition to inflation. its not JUST happening in Canada, its happening everywhere else too.

80% coming as “International Students” from a [single] country - and their intention is “occupation”.
… they enter using fake academic credentials - and their friends, in Canada, have created many fake private academic institutions.
Doesn’t really matter how Immigration Canada change their policy / criteria; this group will find a way to exploit Canada. Note upon entry they’re given a SIN #.

Easy money for Canada and easy immigration for the foreigner. Canada gets over qualified candidates the graduates will hold down menial job positions at very low wages just to get through a 2-5 years of immigration process, guaranteeing Canadian businesses overqualified workers at low wages. People get their passports then realize Canada is not what it once was and many unsurprisingly leave since they get better healthcare from where they original come from ironically.

Have you ever looked into why this is? Public colleges and universities in Canada for domestic students of their province, essentially have the cheapest tuition because our parents paid into the tax system. Public, not private. This is why if you go to another province for school, your tuition is slightly higher (this is true for universities, most colleges I’ve looked into DONT have a tuition fee schedule specifically for out of province students). Schools get a mix of federal and provincial financial help from the government. One of my program directors was discussing this is why he wasn’t allowed to just purchase whatever equipment he and the school needed, it had to go through some sort of approval process first.
International students pay 3x as much because their parents never contributed to our tax system. It was 3x when I was in school from 2015-2020.
Now, in terms of how balanced this is, I can’t sit here and say schools aren’t profiting more than they should be to cover the actual cost of educating students.

I think it's a good move. We went from ~100,000 foreign students to ~400,000 in only a few years. Students put a big strain on low cost housing. It's only one part of the issue, but adding nearly 300,000 foreign students that quickly is a shock to a lot of things all at once.

it's become really difficult in alberta as a student, because the provincial government just keeps gutting funding and recently removed the tuition cap, which has come in tandem with crazy rent and greedy grocery corporations skyrocketing the price of food. as a student, i'm afraid that this move could backfire and cause domestic tuition to go up, because in a way international students are subsidizing my own tuition with the crazy rates they're paying. i just hope that we don't get big tuition hikes at U of A due to the reduction of money from international students

The problem is that education is a provincial matter, and we have some real great provinces that have been cutting funding to universities for half a century. And when students leave school, they enter a predatory job market that underpays them or just outright doesn't want to hire them. I'd love Ottawa to do something about this, but considering how much kicking and screaming happens when Ottawa operates within its mandate, I can't imagine interfering in education will go well.

The schools double their admission in one year and their income as a result without proportionally hiring teachers. It's win-win for these two parties. However, the quality of education plummets for the ones who are there to learn, the job market is oversaturated with cheap labor, and housing becomes a crisis for the Canadians who are not home owners.

Ever since last year, more international students get enrolled than domestic students. This robs opportunities from people who will remain on the homeland, and gives it to foreigners who will complete their education and leave, getting employed in areas like Dubai and other European countries. This is the reality of the education system in Canada and it’s good that the government is making moves to tip the balance in favour of Canada.

Not in Australia though! These two ladies should think about how the visa system in Australia work currently. Australia reformed student visa system a month ago by strengthening rules against onshore visa hopping and graduate visas won't be granted to anyone over 35 years of age. Australia increased English test scores for student visas and graduate visas by 0.5 points, which means that anyone who would like to apply for student visa must score 5.5 on IELTS and 6.5 for graduate visas. Also Australia scrapped visas and permanent residency given to wealthy individuals who invest $5 million or more few days ago. Nowadays, Australian visa system is geared to skilled workers who have 2 years or more experience on each occupation lists, which means that these skilled workers now have a pathway to the permanent residency after two years with one employer. However, these skilled workers must find an employer who is willing to sponsor them and pay them at least $70,000 or more per year. If graduates cannot find employers who pay them $70,000 a year or more, then there is no pathway for them to stay longer in Australia.

Who is incharge of the airports and seaports? Answer, the GOVERNMENT OF CANADA! Stop trying to gaslight and scapegoat students who have been paying 4-6 times what Canadians are paying for the same courses, then they are told they have no "Canadian experience" when they attempt to find a job in their field. What is happening now is due to inept governance, simple! Since no one wants to say the obvious, there it is from a plain Joe. This can be fixed by firstly respecting those who came to Canada and are inside the country. Deal with who is on the inside before trying to address those on the outside.

My colleagues and I believe we heard this week from Miller:
For higher populated provinces like Ontario a two year 50% cap (perhaps more)is being launched effecting Sept 2024 semester+. Less populated provinces, 35%. However certain students are cap-exempt, i.e. physicians, nurses, skilled trade workers.
International students will need to attach a "provincial attestation" to their study permit. Meaning the student must legally verify (via Canadian standards) that ALL of their necessary documents are indeed authentic.
Including showing they have $21,000 in savings (after their tuition for a year is paid plus roundtrip travel costs).
Elements of monthly bank records will need to be shown (if asked for) proving the money is indeed THEIRS plus THEY are using it to pay for things they need from WITHIN Canada. No fraud.
No work permit for spouses. Unless the student is exempt, i.e. a physician. Hence eliminating all the fake marriages.
Student's work permit expires upon graduation. Unless they qualify for exemptions.
Caps/restrictions/strict-authentications. PRIVATE colleges investigated (foreign interference). Cda schools are no longer to be used for people solely wanting PR or, even worse, plan on staying in Cda illegally if disqualified. No more foreign agents, aka smugglers, cashing in too.

My parent's worked at a half decent one and saw how many bs middle management jobs were created for no reason other than to give friends/family a position, all while reducing the overhead for things like libraries or non lucrative programs and jacking the cost/reducing portions of cafeteria meals. Essentially putting the cost on the student's backs.
