I hired the s90 d5 inscription a few weeks ago and it was fucking incredible. I’ve never driven another ‘executive saloon’, but I’m not even sure if I want to. I haven’t stopped talking about it since. Volvo have really made something special here
It had the 18 inch wheels and it still sat like a dream, don’t be unpersuaded by a review saying it’s bad. It floated!
Contrary to what others think, I'm actually really fond of the rear end, though taste is subjective anyways ^^

What a pretty car!
This car looks really good in person, the pictures just don't do it justice. It has a powerful stance, while not being over the top in any way, so it still manages to look smart. It's a classy, timeless design.

Cracking car. The progress that Volvo have made in the XC90 and this new S/V90 makes me want to be at the front of the queue for a new XC60.

Rear styling won't be to everyones tastes, but I saw one in the flesh this week and it's a seriously handsome beast. It's a far bolder design than anything the Germans have produced over the last number of years.

wonderful car, question is it front-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive? That matters a lot.
same question for the Volvo XC90 SUV, is it front-wheel transverse mounted engine or longitudinal real-wheel biased car.

Great review :o) I love the design of this car. The interior looks like it has definitely moved the game on - for me, it is much more modern than BMW 5/Audi A6 and much less fussy than the overwrought blingfest that is the E-Class. Really good effort from Volvo who seem to be flourishing after being set free from Fords shackles.

Nice modern interior but the new E classes interior is superior in my opinion
Its chief rivals are the BMW 5-Series,the Audi A6,the Jaguar XF and the excellent Mercedes E-Class.

I should mention that since James made this review there is now a 150 bhp D3 model and a manual gearbox available for the D3 and D4.

Volvo current styling is sleek and luxurious. Is the quality better than say an E class though? I really do like this lineup though if I was offered to pick, wouldn't it just make sense to take a Mercedes?
the xc90 is definitely on par with GLE imo. Although the wood on the Benz is richer looking. That's just me though, I'm not a big fan of the matte finish wood

Yes, I really like the feel of buttons, the sound they make, and the satisfaction of actually pressing them and getting an immediate accurate response. Touchscreens are nice, but they like feel, and more often than not you find yourself pressing the wrong part of the screen, or it doesn't register the touch properly. The fingerprints that are left on the screen are also unnatractive to me.

Tactile response is so under appreciated during this fad of touch screens. I don't hate them, but for a submersive, undistracted (and safer) driving experience buttons are necessary. Sure they are often mounted on the steering wheel for the driver, but redundant controls on the centre dash are useful for passengers and like you've noted, they are attractive. I also prefer a clean, uncluttered steering wheel, so throw a couple of the common switches on the back and place the rest tastefully on the dash like gems on display
the rear lets it down, those lights are really ugly :(

There is an armrest with two cupholders.
Beautiful interior, strange choice for the gear selector though. Funny thing about this car is it looks. From the front it looks like a jaguar, the saloons backside light looks like that form a vw bora and the rear something a renault car would sport. Then you've got the estate which basically looks like a modern day jag with the characteristic vertical volvo styled lamps.

Awesome car! I would prefer the A6, but this is a lot nicer than the Mercedes E class. Even a bit better than the BMW 5er. However the rear lights suck.

I kind of like Volvo limousine style, don't like German cars much for one reason and that is simply because they are everywhere in every corner hundreds of them, whether it's BMW, audi or Benz, look left, look right, look in front or behind, they are all arround and I am tired of even looking at their typical stereotype shapes, German cars are just majority on the roads and seeing such a beautiful, sexy,large Volvo limousine is eye candy to me.Volvos are totally build for comfort cruise, safest car you can buy...Once you close windows, you can not hear anything from outside world,, car is powerful and large inside, extremly comfortable I own S80 and wouldn't drive anything else in this world so far. I tried German cars couple of times but they ain't anywhere close to Volvo comfort.Volvo is a class on its own. Seeing now S90, something to think about in future.
Volvo and Mercedes are oriented on comfort, Jaguar and BMW on sportiness, but what about and Audi?
Audi is always the car that has everything, but not completely...

okay but for real though, Volvo did a great job of making the design more attractive, the rear slightly reminds me of the 2008-2012 Audi A8... dunno if it's only me who noticed this or you guys as well.
The options list isn't that expensive when you compare it to Audi's option list where in the Q7 rear side airbags are an optional extra, yano, just throwing that out there when it's the type of car people use to ferry kids around. And I think you'll find when you drive the R-Design it is a very different kettle of fish, that goes for any volvo in recent years, take a 14 plate V60 for example, I bet most drivers can instantly tell the differences between the more common SE models and the R-Design models
A V60 or S60 or any cheaper Volvo drives like shit imo. The V70 is a solid car and the new XC90, S90 and V90 are on a different level.
Guess all you needed to do was let Volvo decide what to do with their cars, GEEZ WHO WOULD'VE THOUGHT OF THAT=???

Great review! Carbuyer has defintley the best reviwers of all sites I have visited. Then we have the car, I am from Sweden and here Volvo will never be considered a cool car since it's so damn common. So if you are in the 30ths and want a nice cool car you will go for Audi or BMW. However, we are now in a generation where Volvo simply outperforms its rivals on nearly all aspects fo technology and design. I will still not buy a Volvo but feels pointsless to buy an Audi or BMW at the moment as it gets embarassed by the "family" volvos. I guess I just wait for next generation BMW/Audi or alternatively buy a mercedes as they currently are the only german to deliver for this generation. Though choice!

The leather seats aren't as comfortable as the existing DNA range and outgoing S80. This surprised me for Volvo. I hope the quality and brand isn't under Geely's Chinese influence and I prove myself wrong on another test drive. Ps. Anyone man that's comfortable in those mustard trousers would be comfortable in a Trablant!

Still prefer the new E-Class, they've just gone and done it good with that 1 imo.
