      I suppose TH-cam has opened up a whole new world which is easily accessible where people can share their ideas with others, especially if other people are thinking of starting out on a new hobby etc. And the great thing with watching you is, you show what goes wrong (if it does) and don't edit it out. And you hardly ever give up when it does and are able to fix it. (That ca is great glue hahaha.) Seriously though Bob you put out great videos. Thank you.

      RJBWoodTurner Bob, great videos! I sure learn a lot from watching them. When you are in the market for a new lathe check out Home Depot.com. You can get some good deals around the Christmas holiday season. Delta, Jet and Nova midi lathes specifically. Sometimes they have the Nova packaged with a G3 chuck at a really good price. Make sure you get an electronic variable speed because it really makes a difference. They also have a decent line of Nova chuck accessories. Also, you can finance on their card for no interest for 6 months. That is how I got my lathe and built up my accessories. Hope this helps you out.

    Bob, another great pen, that blank turned out beautiful. I recently bought a set of pen jaws for my chuck which makes drilling a blank super easy as I never seemed to drill a straight centered hole on the drill press.

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Rob Evans I have pen jaws but my Harbor Freight lathe has so much play in the tail stock that I get wallowed out holes. I have to stick with the drill press until I can afford a lathe upgrade.

      Bob, I've always wondered why you don't secure your pen vise to the drill press table once you get the blank centered? I'm not trying to be a smart-ass here, but could that be why you sometimes get off-centered holes in your blanks?

    Hi Bob, beautiful pen. I like that you make it feel as though we are in your shop with you as you turn these beautiful pieces of art. As I’m watching this one you talked about the blank slipping in the vise as you were drilling. Is it possible to cut a piece of wood the dimension of your blank and put at the bottom to prevent the blank from moving?

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Gary,
      I am sure you could make that work. Each blank is different so you just need to assess the situation ahead of time.

    Really nice looking ! I normally don't take my blanks to the sander to round off the corners, I instead do my blanks by first drilling a 1/4" hole then use a long 7/8" hole saw to cut the outside round. Then I simply redrill the sleeve hole to 7mm or larger depending on bushing set and eliminate breakouts or sever chipping. ron

    I love watching your videos. You make pen turning seems so accessible. Do you have any recommendations for a beginner as far as what equipment to get? thanks!

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ush Dadude What you need for pen turning.
      If I were starting over again, I would probably go with the Easy Wood Carbide tools. There is a set with a square cutter, round cutter, and a diamond shaped detail cutter.
      These tools are fairly easy to master and when they get dull, you just replace the cutters, no learning to sharpen or expensive sharpening systems.
      I'm going to assume you want to start with ink pens and tell you what you need for that.
      When you purchase a pen kit, the seller will tell you what bushings and what size drill bit you will need to
      make that pen. Bushings can be used over-and-over and bits only need to be purchased once. The first pen is expensive due to this overhead.
      Medium C/A glue, or Epoxy for gluing tubes into Acrylics blanks. Both work on wood too.
      You do not need a Pen Insertion tool, you can use a screw driver. They are nice to have but not a necessity.
      Purchase a barrel trimmer set with the four most common sizes: 7mm, 8mm, 3/8", and 10mm. This is a must have.
      You will need a mandrel, I personally like the Mandrel Saver setup that Penn State sells. A mandrel is a must have.

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ush Dadude For Acrylics, the easiest was to an amazing finish is Micro Mesh pads. Sand paper is to coarse for Acrylics and should be reserved for wood. Get a box with 4 or 5 different grits.
      You will need a finish for your pens.
      Finish for Acrylics:
      I like Hut Ultra Gloss. It's quick and the results are great.
      Finish for wood:
      Thin C/A is my favorite.
      Shella Way is nice for beginners, as is Hut Friction Polish. C/A is the toughest to master but looks the best and lasts the longest.
      A pen press is nice to have. You can use a clamp or the lathe to press your pens together. Laney Shaughnessy has a video on his channel that shows how to build one. It's really good. Otherwise, purchasing a press can be expensive.
      That is pretty much everything I can think of.
      Below are the links to three videos I made several years ago about what you need to turn pens. They are a bit long but contain a ton of good information. Also, feel free to ask questions as many things have changed in my process over the years.

    Not sure of the viscosity of your thin CA, but a thinner CA might give you an edge in this application. Starbond offers EM-02, which is 2 centipoise (water is 1 CP) and it may be thinner than what you are using. Their EM-120, I think, is similar to the thin CA you are using. In critical situations, like punky wood or even your wood pencils, I prefer EM-02 since it penetrates the wood grain faster and deeper than the EM-120 before it begins to cure. Plus the thin CA cures faster than the thicker CA, requiring only 30 seconds at 70 deg F.

    I've just finished turning 3 of these using Slimline kits, I wasn't brave enough to use a chisel, sanded beginning to end but I have had good response from people who follow my "Ged's pens" page.

      +Gerald Young Wow! Slimlines are brave for this blank. They don't leave much meat at the end of the tube. Just checked out your page and followed.

      +Bob Stembridge LOL,
      It seem I too now know a guy. I will be using those pads when I build a cover for the ram. I'm thinking at some point I need to turn a pen from leather or place a piece of leather into a blank. Hmmmm, ideas keep coming to me.

    So, as I watch more and more of your videos, am I correct in thinking that if I want the nice thin pens like you make, you can almost never have too much CA glue?

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The thinner you turn the blank, the more care it takes. I use C/A to help stabilize as I turn.
      It’s not necessary but it helps me.
      Regards,
      Bob
