Never had one but used to look at the Timex Sinclair in computer magazines at $99 CAD and dreamed of having one. Preordered the Retro Spectrum and its on the way to Canada. I appreciate your video and looking forward to see if any of my TV/Monitors that output 50 Hz as these games were originally made for PAL.
@tooheystechgaming1977 Wish I'd done the same. Trying not to watch any videos which would ruin my own unboxing. Thought your joystick one was safe though. Cheers, subscribed.
Great Video, never had a working joystick for spectrum 48k(16k with a 32k ram pack 😅) Was always a keyboard gamer but reckon I'll compromise and pick up the xbox controller to go with the spectrum I've asked Santa to bring this year 😃
Thanks glad you enjoyed the video Same here i was always a keyboard gamer on the speccy but loving using modern day joysticks Hopefully santa delivers and enjoy it if he brings one
Great video George very informative iv got the gampad does the job but just ordered the Speedlink arrives Friday as you said they won't be in stock long !
Thanks bri glad you enjoyed it That gamepad is a nice pad but just doesnt feel right playing speccy games on it I guarentee those speedlinks will sell out now ha ha Thanks for watching mate
Biggest problem with different sticks on the RGL consoles is that the buttons end up in a random, confusing order. They also still don't support the Xbox Wireless Dongle, which is a shame but maybe out of their control. 8BitDo's wireless dongle works, OTOH, but you'll have to mess around with finding out which button is which, and writing a config text file to the USB stick to re-order them, in order to make it work properly with games that need multiple buttons or keys (which is most of them).
To be fair, it supports more joypads out the box, than the original c64 mini did a few years back. There was better support on the Amiga mini too, so Retro Games' firmware improves all the time.
I plan to use the Immortal Joystick with the DB9 to USB adaptor, should be a solid joystick to use! A little better than the Cheetah 125+ used back in the day lol. But like you, joypads where for consoles back then :-)
Speedlink looks good. Reminds me of the old Kempston joystick. So is the newly released (and out of stock!) "The Gamepad" not just a rebranded A500 pad?
@@tooheystechgaming1977 Apparently Retro Games Ltd have claimed that the new version of The Gamepad (in the Spectrum colours) has an improved D-pad compared to the A500 Mini version. But I’ve not seen anyone do a comparison yet….
Thanks for watching glad you enjoyed it and also thanks for subbing You will have an excellent xmas and a great present to Im yet to try a ps4 controller i do have one knocking about somewhere
Cheers for the video, I have to wait until Xmas morning to get my hands on the delivered "TheSpectrum" some 42 years after getting one the 1st time around. The official gamepads from Retro have been out of stock everywhere for a while now. Even the retro C64 ones are difficult to get hold of by themselves, its cheaper to buy a 2nd hand C64 mini with one included. Anyway another thought, have you tried the gamepads from the PS classic, these are usb - you never know they might work (assuming of course you own a classic).?
Hi there thanks for watching i was going to wait myself until xmas day to open mine but i couldnt wait ha ha I do have a ps mini ill try the controller cheers...its somewhere in the loft lol
@ On the Speccy I played a lot of Combat School which I went through 3 joysticks and completed it too, good old days coming back, love it, just hope this company makes the bbc micro, that Elite game is still epic
@stuartsinclair6269 im eagily awaiting the full size A500 or whatever full size one they are doing next Most my speccy days were spent playing txt adventures shresbury key and winter wonderland ...good times
Cheetah125 is 1 step up from a CX40, I saddens me to think a lot of peoples experience was stilted by these terrible joysticks back in the day. Competition Pro Extra or at least a Zipstick/Tac-2 or nothing. If you must have a grip stick then Quickshot II Turbo, But don't.
I was gona buy an old classic atari joystick with usb, but it said for use with atari products on the spec? So went for the competition pro in the end, ive got a coupleof cabled xbox 36o pads aswell, so will probably use them as well
Not a fan of that big clunky joystick. Got one with the C64 and just couldn't get on with it at all. Replaced it with the game pad. Back in the day I used my Atari 400 joystick with my Spectrum. The Atari joystick is smaller, easier to hold, the stick itself does not have to be yanked and moved so far to get a response. It doesn't make loud clicking noises. I'm currently using the game pad with the new Spectrum and it's working very nicely for me. I've also got a couple of usb Atari joysticks that I got for my 400 mini, so I might try one with the new Spectrum. That would be exactly as I used to play Spectrum games.
FWIW the Competition Pro USB is bit better (and slightly larger, although still a bit too small for my hands these days when playing on a desk) than the stick that comes with The C64, although the style is very similar.
@@tooheystechgaming1977 Nah, Last one on ebay sold for 25, Any more than that is too much. Cheetah joysticks are garbage leaf switch but each to their own.
@firstisurnami4967 i remember them breaking really easy with those non micro switches always sticking and the general build quality wasnt all that great
@tooheystechgaming1977 I tried mine, it worked to a degree - fine on some games such as Commando, didn't work at all on Paperboy, Hypersports looked like it was going to work but it seemed to cause the game to glitch a lot and slow down by many times.
I was wondering though with a pad you could have fire and a jump button, if it would let you set it up that way? It could be better than using up to jump on the joystick? Although that would change the authentic experience
The XB360 controller is the default joypad used on retrogame builds, so I'm not surprised it works with the new Spectrum.
I find it the easiest to use with the new speccy
no one used joypads on a computer in the 80's.. i really miss decent joysticks today.
Yeh it was all on consoles wasnt it
Kempston joystick for the Speccy back in the day.
Nah to flimsy
Kempston for me back in the day. I have a Xbox controller already so that's nice to know , still waiting for my Spectrum from Amazon ):

Enjoy your new spectrum its awesome
They had joypads in the 1980's I recall, Nintendo NES. But joysticks were very, very popular and used lots in the 1980's.
Yeh had a bit of a brain fog moment there lol
Nice one mate, get my Spectrum tomorrow. Happy days.
Happy days have fun mate its awesome i really like what retro games ltd have done with this machine
Pre ordered mine through Amazon. Unfortunately won't get it until at least 4th Dec -4th Jan. Absolutely raging.
@pittodrie19831 i nearly did the same until i was recommended shop2.net and it wad there within 24hr
@tooheystechgaming1977 Wish I'd done the same. Trying not to watch any videos which would ruin my own unboxing. Thought your joystick one was safe though. Cheers, subscribed.
@pittodrie19831 thanks for subbing and watching much appreciated
I've ordered the competition pro to go with mine, seemed an authentic choice👍
It works really well and feels nice playing ..but the xbox controller has stole the show imo but each to their own
That joystick is awkward AF to hold though
@bluefox9er i like it ive always held a joystick in my hands 😃
The joystick works but the fire buttons don't
@markquelch9142 mines fine

@BJD67 i had that one but it broke lol the build quality wasnt all that great
@@tooheystechgaming1977 yes not the best but was an improvement on the one that came with the C64 mini that really was pants 😂
@BJD67 speedlink all the way mate the build is quite solid lol
The thumbsticks/ sliders should be good for diagonals in games such as Fist and Barbarian.
They do work really well

True that yeh the microsoft one is well out of their control but there are a lot of different options to play with
Can you reconfigure the gamepad buttons? Or assign keyboard buttons to the gamepad?
Yes you can remap them in settings
It’s true, the keyboard route is the best but will someone think of the membranes!!
Always the keyboard route

The menu popping up with the XBOX 360 controller plugged in, is that stick drift?
Thats a good shout but i think it does it to configure the controller once you have pressed B it doesnt come back
I thought the Xbox pad would work. It works on a pc and most retro game boxes 👍
First time using that controller on a retro box i honestly didnt think it would work and so glad it did
I'm using a new joypad with full TMR + optical sensors.
Happy days
I went from a basic cheap joystick to a Cheetah125
Proper stuff
