Great video, JR. Your SIMPLE, to-the-point explanation is very clear and understandable for beginners. Too many people giving too much advice hurts a potential bowler more than anything. Big thanks to you for making me finally understand!
Hello JR. I've been following your uploads ever since I accidentally bumped into one only less than a year ago. And so far, I am finding the way you impart the fundamentals, way up to the scientific complexities of bowling (and what may seem to many as simple as learning to ride a bike) very easy to ingest, digest, understand and remember. I had been on and off with the game since the mid sixties (7 or 8 years old) up to the present. Started with duckpins, eventually to tenpins. I have seen for myself the developments and changes from equipments, to the actual science of the modern day swing and release over the years. From shellac coated pine-maple wooden lanes with exposed ball return tracks, to synthetics. From hard rubber balls (my first ball was a 9-pounder Manhattan Rubber) to urethanes and reactives. From two hole drilled balls (thumb and middle finger) to the present 3-holes. The methods by which you chose to apply and demonstrate the lessons and techniques to be in concert with the changes are excellent. A job very well done.
I literally finished from bowling and this pops up in my recommended, I’ve never ever searched a bowling vid in my life, and the first time I go bowling this shit shows up, fbi is getting a bit too obvious

I was at work one day listening to Pandora and a Bloodhound Gang song came on. A coworker came over and asked if it was Die Antwoord. I honestly had never heard of them before but the coworker talked about them a little and said I should check them out. I got back to work and that was the end of it. I NEVER googled them, or TH-cam'd them or anything. Later I got home and pulled up TH-cam and there were not 1, not 2, but 3 Die Antwoord videos in my recommended list. It was creepy to say the least.
I bowled competitively as a kid. Started in leagues when I was 8 or 9. I got sponsored by a bowling alley to be on their travel team. I’ve won NY state and regional championships, both individually and as a team. After you learn how to curve the ball, it’s impossible to throw it straight. I’ve tried, but I actually don’t even know how to release the ball anymore without some kind of spin. I was taught to release the ball like you’re “shaking the hand of the pins”.
Went bowling last week for the first time in around 15 years! Absolutely loved it. I just tried keeping my arm straight as possible and aimed for the middle. Had no idea about curving!
Once I started delivering the ball with my finger holes being in the 9 and 3 o’clock position (and saluting on the follow-through), my game improved dramatically! The two-finger offset differential produced the spin, along with proper arrow alignment resulting in pin 1-3 sweeping!
First- I bowl straight and rarely do I get splits. Second - Thank you for actually taking time to verbalize the proper form as well as illustrating it. I've watched a bunch of videos for this and it never got thru. I cant wait till this COVID crap is over to try this.
I bowled straight too but it is a straight angle and it drove the pins clear back off the deck. Loved the real wood lanes but some were like taking an oil bath.🤣
Thanks for the tip. Just recently took up bowling after about 20 years of not doing it. Have seen the curves on Facebook videos but at least you've explained how to do it. Shall try this next time.
Crazy how fast I learned and got good at curving the ball in one night. Never tried curving because it looked difficult but I told myself to try and now I know how to. Got my score from 70-120 to 171. Curving is more consistent.
Finally got the answer why we need to spin. Before learning anything, the first and most basic thing to teach is why to learn it. And you taught it in the very beginning. Amazing. Thank you.
i throw whats known as a "backup ball" pretty successfully and im a league sanctioned bowler. just do what feels right and use the arrows to adjust as needed as the oil breaks down
Good teacher. Being good at something doesn’t mean you can teach it. You’re good at teaching because you know how to dumb things down to people that don’t have all of the knowledge that you have in your head
Subbed. Just got into bowling and your teaching style works for me. I bowl 2 finger and currently my biggest inconsistency is releasing the ball in the center lane so when it catches, it's curving from mid to left as opposed to right to mid. When I release it though 8/10 times I can tell the second it hits the lane if it's gonna strike or get the 2-5-7pins lol. Looking forward to watching all your videos
Ive been bowling for a bit now once a week for fun. Now i want to advance my skills and will be practicing this as i am, like you mentioned, a bowler who uses the thumb. I cant wait to try it out and see if this video helps. Will try to return to this video to update lol
Great information. I was in leagues in the 60's and 70's, had a 180 -190 average in Mens scratch league. My work kept me from leagues so I took a break. Now I'm retired and want to start again. I have a plastic ball and threw a curve from the second board but now the curve is gone. The local pro said the lanes have changed from wood to a composite which is why my curve is gone and I will need to upgrade my ball. I also see that few pros are throwing a curve but throwing a hook. I'm hoping you have some lessons on throwing a hook. I live in California so I cant go to a bowling alley...only video bowling :( !
You don't have to throw a hook ball to be an over 200 average bowler. All that you have to do is aim it properly and throw it as hard as you can. I do this technique all of the time and it works. The pins fly all over the place when I throw the ball. This guy in the video threw the ball soft and in a way that he knew it would leave a split.
@@crazyclown2650 Hard isn't always the right way and good for everyone. Control is more important than speed. In this video he was going slow on purpose to demonstrate the proper technique. Besides, throwing the ball as hard as you can does nothing if you can't put the ball in the pocket. Control first, speed later
Unsolicited tip: there are styrofoam spheres at "craft" places like Michael's, that you can drill holes into, which can be used to demonstrate and practice finger and hand techniques with something much lighter than a bowling ball. (But they cost $19. Sad.)
I bowled my best games 5 hours from my home lanes and they were the old school wood lanes. 269, 274, and 250. Average of 264 for the day. Drop your thumb at the bottom of the swing an pull straight up thro. Giving a full swing for release. Consistency. You'll find out cool I can hook. Now control it.
I try to describe my personal technique, because I have freakish wrists, is that my hand goes from supporting the ball from underneath to a natural handshake position. My fingers aren't in the ball to hold it, they are there to guide the ball and impart the spin I desire. My first experiments with spin involved using the 2 finger approach, but then I joined a league and got my own bowling ball (a purple Hammer brand ball) using my thumb for extra control became natural. Nowadays, I have an incredibly hard time making the ball go straight, but I've worked that into my routine to the point that the only shot I can't make with decent consistency is a 7-10.
I'm bowling in leagues for the first time ever in two weeks and just got custom fitted with a plastic ball that looks cool to me. Going from bowling with two fingers with a house ball to bowling the correct way with a custom ball is going to be a challenge. This video lesson will be helpful. Thank you. 🙂
@@jamesjones5055 it was the first ball I got. Lol since then, I had purchased a better performance Pearl reactive ball. The plastic ball I basically just use to pick up spares now. There are times I did use a plastic ball to get strikes and that's only because the lanes were really dry and the plastic ball doesn't hook as much as my pearl reactive ball.
Great help I have seen hundreds of these and all spinning ever does is put the ball in the gutter. No video has ever been clear enough and this one is no exception.
Im a newbie at 60 and into this new sport for 3 months now. I get so frustrated in learning how to curve the ball that most of the time ends in the gutter. Now, i just throw the ball straight trying to find my mark between the lead pin on either side using a T zone which I’m pretty successful in making my strikes and hitting my spares. At the end of the day, the fun is so fulfilling.
Thanks this has helped in theory, I’m bowling 2 games in a few hours hopefully I can remember these little gems, ps I’m a lefty so I will just reverse and go for the 1, 3 pocket
Well, I decided to increase revs and tried to "come around the ball with my fingers" and tore one leg of a "Y" ligament in my middle finger. Ouch! Cannot be fixed BTW. So now I lead with my ring finger and let my fingers come up through the ball at release. Seems to work good when I have a good well-balanced approach.
I searched "bowling spin technique" and the two first videos had similiar amounts of views, so I clicked one. Was mostly satisfied with the video but thought to myself "let's watch the other one as well". Same boy as in the first one video appears, I shit you not I thought I was trippin
Thank you for not ostracizing thumbless bowlers. Too many people on here say throwing thumbless is "not the real way" or "not the right way". As a thumbless bowler i will give my elders the honor and respect they deserve by calling thumb in bowling "traditional" or "the original way", but it is hard to respect someone who so fervently undermines my and other bowlers efforts to become better at the game. so again, thank you for showing respect to all players of our sport. much love
I’ve been trying different curve techniques for years. The best one for me is finding a really light ball, like under 10 pounds, and just barely placing the tips of my fingers in the holes (no thumb).
For me, the best technique is throwing the ball with two hands, with my dominant hand in the ball, but not my thumb, and when I throw it, I bring my hand around the ball. I can get a very high amount of revolutions doing that technique, and it allows me to hook house bowling balls.
Just realize that by using a light ball, you are losing a lot of potential energy and the ball will deflect off of the pins more. Use the heaviest ball you comfortably can. You want the ball to drive through the pins.
As a person who is just starting bowling and is going to be on a team for it at school in 2 months this was a good video so that I can practice before bowling starts
I just started curving the ball, I use only 2 fingers and my wrist is extremely sore, not sure if I’m over rotating my wrist or what but im definitely doing something wrong.. although I got up to a 171 which is good for me since I just started bowling
Great video...I hope to see the correct method from which position where the hand comes forward to the side of our leg that the hand should start turning to hook the ball and the finishing position of the hand or finger...
This really explains how to curve the ball whereas This other vid I saw where the guy was supposed to be showing how to hook the ball but didn't do his hand to the side of the ball as he released it like you did to make it curve which didn't make sense to me. 😖 Now I understand much better how to do it, thanks. 😊👍🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Left-handers do this mirroring already mentally all their life, don't need a phone and mirror for that, it's second nature a lot of right handers are not always aware of, because the never need to. 😉
I usually throw house balls and throw 90-100. First two games with a Hammer Solid fingertip grip 106 then 148, first game I was trying way too much angle and speed to spin lol. Its WAY more fun after two games! Bowling with my son in a beginner league.
@@Adonis_RL as of now I’m 13, there was a comment saying that I sucked. For absolutely no reason, I average 210 and my ball speed is 17mph, and my rev rate is 396. I’ve improved 😀
I play with 11 lbs and my best scores are 199, 187 & 182. Started a few months back as a lefty & I use the home bowling balls from Brunswick. I can't add spin on it, so I play straight & I focus on the middle dot.
Been boring for 35 years I've always use the two-finger method. I was up in the 200s to 10 average with two fingers I've got to 300. Now that I'm older my arm is breaking down elbow wrist forearm. Soma average has gone down I'm in the 176 range now. so this video really helps me learn how to bowl with my thumb thank you for making it!
I cradle the ball between my wrist and forearm with two fingers in the ball. Toss it to the right while standing on the left side of the lane and throw my arm over top of the ball. Gets a nasty curve. Not like most people but it works for me.
Saturday still up in the morning gotta get up gotta get into bed its 4 am here in the morning and I'm getting taught how curve a ball by a guy with a bald head
Ha! Saturday here and midnight! and I'm learning too. Start leagues in two weeks. Got my first plastic ball and had it drilled yesterday. it hasn't been thrown yet
This seems like it would be hard for an absolute beginner. When I started I was taught to keep your hand at about a 45 degree angle and let the ball do the work. The angle of your hand, without turning it more, is enough to go from the second outside arrow to the pocket. The shake hands with the lane approach. A beginner probably shouldn't be throwing to the right at all. It makes for a lot of gutter balls. You're very right about going over the top of the ball when throwing though. We used to call that the wrist wrecker shot.
The idea of this isnt to teach proper technique. That's what other ones are for. This is all about just giving the true beginner something they can do with little effort and maybe as they see their ball hook and score goes up they want to learn more and stay with the game
@@Tenpindoctors I did watch a some of your other videos and have to say there's really solid advice on them! I just went with a friend who has bowled only a few games ever. What he was doing reminded me of what you said in this video. He got quite a bit of spin but also bowled a 50. He just kept throwing it in the gutter. I told him what I said before and he broke 100 for the first time ever. The biggest difference was him starting the ball straight. Once we took away him throwing gutter balls it was way more fun for him as well.
I personally learned how to curve a ball before but I don’t remember exactly. I know I have to push up my ring and middle finger but when I went back to bowling, it spins but don’t even close to hooking. That’s why I always a 2 hander because I can actually curve with 2 hands
When I was a kid I used to bowl quite a bit as the alley right next to where I lived was cheap as chips. I never learned to curve the ball, never really tried even, but I still managed maybe a 150 average when I went there regularly, with a record of like 230-something, can't remember the exact score. A straight throw can still hit the same pocket as a curve ball (not right in the middle, but in between number 1 and either 2 or 3), but it's harder with a straight throw because the window where you need to hit is smaller. I wonder how well I'd have done if I bothered to ever learn the proper technique instead of just winging it on my own.
I don't worry about leaving splits when I bowl. I'm too busy throwing gutterballs

Pritsie how’d it go?
HOWD IT GO MAN
How do it goooo
We need to go bowling
Even bowling since I was 5 and I’m 46 now, the simplicity of how to “hook” a ball was beyond my comprehension and strength ability until I was a teen.
I was taught the hand shake method and I'm using this as a reashernce to make sure I'm doing it right because I'm about to bowl for a jr league
I just started curving the ball, I use only 2 fingers and my wrist is extremely sore, not sure if I’m over rotating my wrist or what but im definitely doing something wrong.. although I got up to a 171 which is good for me since I just started bowling
Do you use two hand or only one hand?
Great video...I hope to see the correct method from which position where the hand comes forward to the side of our leg that the hand should start turning to hook the ball and the finishing position of the hand or finger...
Thank you for uploading these videos, JR!
Chesterfield Michigan! I lived on 23 mile and Gratiot over there in chesterfield!
I was lit on Cain when I learned how to bowl. 99 was a crazy year... I'm now a 200 avg bowler. Without the Cain lol
ryan scheatzle cocaine?
Crackhead
I’d like to see some close ups and slow-mo of your right hand please. Thx
5:15 you said you'd do another video on how to properly do it. Where's that vid?
Bowling is life love the game on a team this helped cause got a curve bowling ball thanks
Just love to have this set up in my house 😍
This really explains how to curve the ball whereas This other vid I saw where the guy was supposed to be showing how to hook the ball but didn't do his hand to the side of the ball as he released it like you did to make it curve which didn't make sense to me. 😖 Now I understand much better how to do it, thanks. 😊👍🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Like you're shaking hands after the shot!
Great tutorial! This is really informative.
Life hack: If you're left-handed, hold your phone in front of a mirror and watch.
I can't believe how dumb that sounds while it actually works 😂😂
Leave us Lefty's alone! Lol we got this.
Life hack: That is your first problem...Put the phone down.
Left-handers do this mirroring already mentally all their life, don't need a phone and mirror for that, it's second nature a lot of right handers are not always aware of, because the never need to. 😉
@@ericgelders dude it's a joke
Wow just came across your channel my family owns a restaurant in chesterfield small world glad you’re a local
I found this just in time lol
Nice, now I am theoreticlay the best in my schools class
Thanks 😄👍
I didn’t know Joe Bastianich made bowling tutorials.
@God Bless The Internet lmao, hes prob gonna say
"CLOSE DOWN YOUR FOOKIN ALLEY"
I usually throw house balls and throw 90-100. First two games with a Hammer Solid fingertip grip 106 then 148, first game I was trying way too much angle and speed to spin lol. Its WAY more fun after two games! Bowling with my son in a beginner league.
I’m nine and my highest is 133! I curve good and I want to be the best bowler!
heck yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I too want to be the next hokage!
Thanks for hating, 11 and average 210 to 215
@@str8fiyah918 bro who was hating?
@@Adonis_RL as of now I’m 13, there was a comment saying that I sucked. For absolutely no reason, I average 210 and my ball speed is 17mph, and my rev rate is 396. I’ve improved 😀
Great video!
Just show them some Amletto Monacelli matches. CRANK IT!
4:30 thank me later
I saw your comment 2 months ago and decided to thank you later :) thank you
Thank you.
Saved me a lot of time
I play with 11 lbs and my best scores are 199, 187 & 182. Started a few months back as a lefty & I use the home bowling balls from Brunswick. I can't add spin on it, so I play straight & I focus on the middle dot.
I been going for a week now and I just get worse everyday 😹💀
Been boring for 35 years I've always use the two-finger method. I was up in the 200s to 10 average with two fingers I've got to 300. Now that I'm older my arm is breaking down elbow wrist forearm. Soma average has gone down I'm in the 176 range now. so this video really helps me learn how to bowl with my thumb thank you for making it!
Golfer checking in. Lower scores in golf are good. Your analogy was opposite.
That's a reach, you knew what he meant lol
I cradle the ball between my wrist and forearm with two fingers in the ball. Toss it to the right while standing on the left side of the lane and throw my arm over top of the ball. Gets a nasty curve. Not like most people but it works for me.
Who is watching this when they already know how to hook a ball
I usually just threw it strait but between the front pin and the ones beside it and did a lot better than my friends but I’m trying to curve it
4:47 (you're welcome)
Nobody said thank you
I had it described to me years ago, when you roll the ball to put spin on it, make like you shake hands with the ceiling.
That’s bad advice
U should get a cameraman to get better angles for a better vid, so it is so much easier for tyhe viewers to see what ur doing
Well this video helped me a lot. Now I am practicing it and getting better at it
Saturday still up in the morning gotta get up gotta get into bed its 4 am here in the morning and I'm getting taught how curve a ball by a guy with a bald head
You're welcome
Ha! Saturday here and midnight! and I'm learning too. Start leagues in two weeks. Got my first plastic ball and had it drilled yesterday. it hasn't been thrown yet
LOL
Hey hairy, get some sleep. Then go bowling LOL.
Golfing score go up if you manipulate the greens
Bull shit story
