    My father was an explosive engineer working for Hercules Powder co for 30 years. He specialized in open pit mines in the south west USA. copper, iron and pumice. A few deep gold mines. He took me along when I was young. Ammonium nitrate was becoming popular and he used it at the Eagle Mountain open pit iron mine down near the Mexican border. He set the blast for a quarter mile long shelf. He let me detonate the blast. It was spectacular. A months worth of loading holes and the entire blast took under ten seconds. It took 24 hours for the dust to settle.

    Its just insane the amount of energy some of those rocks can absorb. They arent even flying that far , only when you put in so many chrages that it splits right between them, there is enough excess energy to throw them a few meters in the air.
    Great video always fascinating to see things blow up.

    Plenty of "candidates'' here methinks - monster lumps too. Hours of drilling - minutes of charging and - milliseconds of glory :) Majestic results... fly rock on first series didn't seem too bad considering - super slo-mo footage. Second batch fly rock had some huge chunks, all that delicious energy. Third det cord shot was nicely 'brisk'. Glad all cameras survived - just! Last 11 hole deal send some big bits real close to one camera. Premium video this one Dave :)

    One day I wanna see a grimaced Dave, chewing a cigar with his molars deliver an Eastwood-esque monologue to the camera. Put in some Ennicio Morricone gunfight music and gotta have the tension escalating as you hear the whine of the blasting signal, some quickening jumping shots between your eyes and the rock. Then when the dust has settled Dave says without unclenching his jaw says" A rocks got to know his limitations"

      Welcome aboard! Give Maine Drilling and Blasting a call, if the job is too small for them, you can probably hire a drill and do it yourself using not explosives but and expanding chemical cracking agent like Dexpan.

      The things we do for love....

    • @LatersOnTheMenjay.
      @LatersOnTheMenjay. 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@demolitiondavedrillandblast thank you for the recommendation. I bought a Milwaukee SDS Plus (portable) to try the bore-hole/Dexpan route, but I think it's too much for the drill and would take forever to drill. Using a 1" Bosch carbide bit it's taking a long time and the drill gets extremely hot. I picked up the cheapest SDS-MAX (corded) that I could from Harbor Freight and I'll try that before I start throwing decent money at it.
      The boulder itself is actually in my backyard and I have no idea how big it actually is. Am I pushing $hit uphill by trying to take off the top of it while it's still mostly buried? Plan is to just drill about 20 12" - 18" bore hills with a 1" diameter and then fill them with Dexpan.

    • @demolitiondavedrillandblast
      @demolitiondavedrillandblast  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The SDS-Max will do it but not quickly... and the 1" holes will not build enough pressure to be effective, you really need 1.5" holes (yeah... that is a lot harder to drill). The big SDS bits are not cheap and probably not long enough either. Your likelihood of success depends a lot on the structure of the rock. Often with Granite that manifests as large almost flat rock that is just breaking the surface there will be horizontal jointing planes that can make he task easier. How big is the rock? We can discuss via email if you like - dave at demolitiondave dot com dot au send pictures etc.
