      Glad you enjoyed it 55, I had to be a bit conservative with this one to make sure most of the rock was left on the road as they want to use it for erosion control works near by.

    3:10 is that a vacuum system on the drill that’s pulling out the cuttings? Do you collect the cuttings? Are they large enough to use for hole stemming?

    • @demolitiondavedrillandblast
      @demolitiondavedrillandblast  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The cuttings are pushed out of the hole by the flushing air that travels down the hole in the middle of the drill rod, when they reach the top of the hole the vac system sucks them up. The big bits land in the blue cyclone separator and the very fines in the plastic bag on the bottom of the vac. If you were to sieve the contents of the separator there would be some pieces big enough to use as stemming. Nasty stuff to handle though, best left alone.

    away. [Mt Prospect is a NW suburb of Chicago.]
    JAKE: Well, thank YOU pal! The day I get out of prison, my own
    brother picks me up in a police car.
    [Fog horn]
    ELWOOD: You don't like it?
    JAKE: No, I don't like it.
    [Elwood jumps the drawbridge.]
    JAKE: This car's got a lot of pickup.
    ELWOOD: It's got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant. It's got
    cop tires. Cop suspension. Cop shocks. It's a model
    made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on
    regular gas. Whaddaya say? Is it the new Bluesmobile or
    what?
    [Jake lights cigarette and throws the lighter out the window.]
    JAKE: Fix the cigarette lighter.
    Elwood: "It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses." Jake: "Hit it."

    When you have drilled the rock if you go all the way through! Do you have to partially plug the hole so the force doesn’t go down into the ground. Also do you stagger the blast or does it fire off all at once in the rock.

    • @demolitiondavedrillandblast
      @demolitiondavedrillandblast  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, if you drill through and you don't want to waste all of your blast energy you would use some screened crushed rock stemming material to back fill the hole a little way before loading the charge. Best results are obtained when the holes are time spaced by a few milliseconds, this improves the fragmentation a lot and decreases the felt ground vibration.

Extra style points for the excellent shatter and throw, not to mention the bonus where you all but paved that forest road with the rubble. Loved those slo-mo shots - that last one, I though we were going to see a Go Pro getting knocked over, but that big chunk turned last minute. The ripping sound on that shot....oh yeah. I know nothing about blasting but it's cool to watch. I also had a job that took me to remote places to do maintenance on Sodar units and meteorological towers. Some were near the peaks in the Rocky Mountains and others were in the middle of vastly huge Kansas crop fields! It was definitely a job that required a 4 wheel drive truck, because some of those old roads were almost vertical and lots of them forded creeks and small rivers.

    BTW, I've often wondered what happens when you drill through the bottom of the rock. You mentioned drilling through to clay in the bottom of the rock. You said something about filling the bottom of the hole, I'm assuming to keep the explosive within the rock. What do you fill the bottom with? Does the filler keep the explosion from blowing out the bottom or the rock?

    • @demolitiondavedrillandblast

      Yes, I use the same material that I would stem (back fill above the explosive). It is largely successful most of the time Tim.

    it may take a while but it'll grow back bush fires down there and forest fires here are nothing that's not supposed to happen here and there just part of nature's cycle!! looking at the road in you missed a couple spots that could have used some of your attention Dave!! 11 hours round trip driving not counting drilling and popping i guess you got home about 11;00 maybe midnight? shock tube with a toadstool or slammer as we call it on this one, can't say it's one of my favorites! there just something about slamming that plunger handle down or cranking the handle on a 10 cap hell box i can't resist!

      We stayed an extra night so we could start out fresh next morning. I'll have to take my old rack bar "blasting machine" out on another job soon.

    OK, who else heard the guitar riff in their head at the end of the Blues Brothers reference?
    Thanks for sharing Dave!

    Great video. Thanks. Did you use any time delay to help loft the mass toward the downhill side of the road?

      Sure did.

      @@demolitiondavedrillandblast It might make an interesting video to explain why and how time delay is used to achieve desired results when blasting. Thanks again for great videos. Jess

      Glad you enjoyed it Bruce - the little DJI Osmo slo-mo cameras are a lot closer than they look, the extreme wide angle lens gives the illusion of greater distance.

    If you ever get tired of wresting the Roo, try this; 2.5 meters of 15 mm good rope, and a 100 rope coupler. Slide coupler onto rope, Tie a loop on each end to go over handles. After a good collar, put foot in rope/coupler at comfortable height. Rope can be criss crossed over handle for varying height adjustment. After the good collar, just put as much weight as you want on drill via weight shift. As usual, make sure you have a clean surface so you don't slip. Good balance a must. Much less tiring than holding onto it, plus you won't develop carpal tunnel as fast.

    What is the reason for the charges going off sequentially with a small delay in-between, as opposed to all at the same time? Does it just make less mess, or does it actually help break the rock better?

    • @demolitiondavedrillandblast
      @demolitiondavedrillandblast  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question Matt. The small delay in-between gives much better fragmentation for the same size hole spacing and charge mass, when all the holes fire together as when fired using det cord you get big blocky pieces. If the big rock with the deep holes was configured this way the yield would have had a lot of oversize and considering that they wanted to use some of the stone this method was not desirable. Thanks for watching.

      Excellent, I have 4 gas powered rock drills. One that I purchased for the time that you need to drill a few holes and you can not get the compressor close and the other 3 because the were almost new in the boxes and so cheap that I could not resist. I should do a video about them some day. I have feather and wedges also Matt, love them, from tiny ones that go in a 14mm hole all the way up to hydraulic ones for 48mm hole.
