An important point for newbies: the Six Methods are NOT mutually exclusive, they are reinforcing! A pictorial element can also be phonetic, a phonetic element can be symbolic. I can give examples if you wish. You are best to start with the "isolated" "solitary" characters, they are easiest and will be reused as parts of the complex compound characters!

For example, the character "问" meaning " ask", can be considered as a picto-phonetic character where 口 indicates the meaning and 门 indicates the sound of the character. Some people also consider that 问=门+口， it's an associative character. Agreed that for beginners, it's best to remember " solitary characters 独体字"， Almost most pictographic characters and indicative characters are solitary characters 独体字。Almost most associative characters and picto-phonetic characters are compound characters.

It is pictophonetic, right? It uses 女 radical which means woman, and 吗 for phonetic, which is pronounced like ma.
