I love the history and the breaking down of the characters. Some were familiar as I've reviewed Radicals in the past. Great video!!!!!!

    Example 妈妈
It is pictophonetic, right? It uses 女 radical which means woman, and 吗 for phonetic, which is pronounced like ma.

An important point for newbies: the Six Methods are NOT mutually exclusive, they are reinforcing! A pictorial element can also be phonetic, a phonetic element can be symbolic. I can give examples if you wish. You are best to start with the "isolated" "solitary" characters, they are easiest and will be reused as parts of the complex compound characters!

Great point! Thank you so much for bringing this up! One more thing to add to this is that sometimes one character can be considered two types of characters at the same time. For example, the character "问" meaning " ask", can be considered as a picto-phonetic character where 口 indicates the meaning and 门 indicates the sound of the character. Some people also consider that 问=门+口, it's an associative character.
Agreed that for beginners, it's best to remember " solitary characters 独体字", Almost most pictographic characters and indicative characters are solitary characters 独体字。Almost most associative characters and picto-phonetic characters are compound characters.

I love your videos! Very informative! Yesterday I watched your video about the 15 radicals. It opened up a very good perspective and understanding of Chinese characters. The plus this 6 types of characters, I'm having a clear and thorough understanding of the Chinese characters. By the way can you tell me the title of your reference book for this video? I want to read more. Thanks

Where can I find a list of the 2500-3000 characters that I should at least know to be fluent in Chinese?

That's a great question! Thank you for your great inspiration. I think I can make a video for that.

This is very helpful with written stuff. Currently, I am struggling with the pronunciation of the words, including the tones and homophobes :(
