This match is truly incredible and although it’s talked about, it still seems underrated. Rafa was 31-0 at Roland Garros, had won 4 slams, had beat Federer all 4 times and Novak thrice, never lost 2 sets in a match and had only lost 7 sets in his run. And then Soderling comes along and blows him out. Funny thing was it wasn’t a fluke, he out Nadaled-Rafael Nadal. It’s almost annoying watching Nadal play because he’s too dominant, manages to get everything on his forehand side as he wides up for a cannon down the line. Soderling did that same strategy to him, managed to get in the right place and just blast the forehand, Nadal always has others chasing his shots and trying to stay alive in the rally while Soderling had Nadal doing that to him! An incredible victory and although Soderling never won a slam he will always have the first win over Nadal at RG and the only win over Nadal at RG in his prime.
The ideal Victor of Nadal at RG would be a giant ( to overcome high bounce) with a great backhand, firing bombs from a height deep into the court. He must also have a wicked serve. Soderling was that guy.

nadal should have probly used more slices and drop shots especially when the wind could help the droppers... He just kept using the same game plan: heavy topspin high boune and soderling just ate thst shit up hes tall and seemed to like it. I know easier said then done
Like you said, Soderling was tall which negated Nadal's FH effectiveness with the high bouncing, top spin shots. Also, Soderling had such powerful swings from both ends. Nadal simply got bulldozed here.
@@juliohernandez3323 when nadals at his best, such as when he was back in 2004-2010 he uses the drop shot A LOT. But not this match for some reason and solderling did not look like he likes to chase down a good drop shot.
@@altruism8637So Nadal was not at his best here at 23? Why is it that when Nadal loses is either because he was not at his best, or my favorite, he was injured? LOL. That is how you beat Nadal on clay as great as he is, with power and physicality, but only Soderling had those tools out of all the opponents Nadal has faced at the French.
@@juliohernandez3323 I don't think he was using the drop shots at all, or if he did they weren't executed well. He also likes it really hot mediterranean weather and it didn't look that hot and sunny.
@@altruism8637 The use of the drop shot or lack thereof is not why he lost, and conditions can always vary and will either help or affect the player's performance to some degree. Players learn to adapt to the conditions to the best of their abilities.
With all that said, Nadal simply got outgunned by someone that he could not bully with his unique advantage on clay of high bouncing, heavy top spin FH to the BH. Soderling nullified his advantage and Nadal became a mere mortal.
What a fucking sad day...😡😡😠
Excellent match :)
Came here to read the comment where an idiot will be saying that he (Nadal) was injured 😂🤣😂🤣.
Disgusting French public behaviour towards a great Roland Garros Champions back then (now the greatest). Outrageous. That‘s unheard of in Wimbledon when it comes to the way British spectators behave towards Federer, the grass maestro.
They cheered for Soderling because he was the underdog! Disgusting in whose eyes? A die hard Nadal fan?!
You sound like that prick Tony! Nadal lost fair and square, no cheating, no bath room breaks abuse, nothing!
Just outplayed by Robin!
@@ABC-ABC1234 nah, I wasn’t just talking about this match. The public were always uneasy with Nadal like they were seemingly hopping to see him loose every time he put a step on court. Nothing to do with the underdog argument which, by the way, doesn’t justified any lack of respect or support to someone that it’s a legend on that field. I guess you don’t get the bitter relationship historically between Spain and France.
@@LorianR If you win a GS 11111111 times than yes, it's understandable to see the French cheer for the underdog, don't take it personally. Bla bla bla bitter relationship, go visit France, you won't see them trash talk Spain. Just saying, it's not that deep! Tony Nadal made a fool of himself that day blaming the French for Nadal's loss...
It's because they cheered for Rafa to loose and Roger to finally win RG... All crowds are always for Roger... And when he is not there then even Rafa is ok :D
@@elphidium Nah Roger wasn't even questioned that day. They were surprised and positively impressed to see Nadal getting beat by a overwhelming power. And yeah, cheering for an underdog is something that happens in a lot in Paris and London.
Söderling was the biggest hitter at the time, but not best player. Federer and Nadal show us that 2009 and 2010, but still 2 finals in a row

Ahahah « Soderling is not your father’s sweep »
so.....how soderling could beat rafa in R.G that year BUT NOT fed in the same year's RG final ?
Biggest upset in tennis history!
What is the real reason Soderling was prohibited from every playing again after winning the Bastad final in 2011 62 62 vs Ferrer? No chance the official narrative of mono is true. Zero chance of that. Soderling was forced out when he was ranked 5 in the world.
Idiot.
In terms of Forehands, Soderling, Del Potro and Roger dominated the tournament.
Federer GOAT
Nadal had angina and was sick in that match, said by Songa.
He also had tendinitis in his knees and after RG he did not compete until August.

its just that every time Rafa loses a match, packs of Rafa Fans come and say : "Nadal was injured / sick, so makes sense that he lost"
Its almost always been like that, Nadal himself often does it in the post interview, or we learn from a member of his team that he was injured.
The only reason Rafa lost this was because he was suffering from knee tendinitis. It was bad enough for him to skip WB two weeks later.
That's always the narrative with Nadal; he loses cause he was injured. Rather than he was outplayed to the degree where he exceeded his physical capabilities and became injured. Nadal has lived with injury almost from the beginning but has managed it.
@@waynepinnock5874 muller Weiss is a congenitive disorder and has nothing to do with him being outplayed.
