The problem is- history is NEVER right. Ever. Unless you were there and alive, no one knows the truth 100% at all. History is often romanticized to fit our whims and views of the time, too. Old letters, writings, customs, are not a guarantee, as the people who discover them are often biased and put their own spin on it. "Ah yes, it *could* be this or it *could* be that." We will never know what happened way back then. We weren't there. People change history all the damn time.

@Lola Montez I don't think it is even about re-writing history. It is an artistic take on her life. Just like people create movies based on real people- historical fiction. This show is just out to make you uncomfortable- but it is also so artistic! I understand that you pretty much hate it, but I don't mind it, even being a fan of hers.
@Lola Montez I see where you are coming from, but if someone wants to believe that death is a literal person, that she twerked, and she spoke exactly like we do now (and they don't research her for themselves- like people should... in my opinion) that is their problem. Their willingness to let a show tell them "everything they need to know" about a person says a lot about them. Problem with historical fiction, even fiction presented in a stylized way, is that it deals with real people who actually lived. I doubt I'd want someone portraying my grandma this way. Thankfully, she's not historically famous.

@@jjavie2174 This could be likely, because of her many controversial opinions at the time. Many of her poems do talk about God, though. I would be lying if I said I knew if she went to church or not.
Emily Dickinson was bi?, how people know? As far as I found out in the internet: it's been reivindicated and confirmed that she was in love with Susan Gilbert and that her supposed "love affairs or crushes" with some of the men mentioned in her biographies to be part of her life (like Benjamin or Charles) where determined as that by the editors who established that a male figure had to be the center of her romantic inspirations, but it really isn't confirmed to be true, because some of the poems written to Sue were changed to be destined to a male person (I read it somewhere). So it's really not confirmed that she was into men but it was in fact confirmed, that she had a romantic involvement with Susan Gilbert, so how do you know she was bi?
Well, they showed her death, but in a more light sense of it...they wanna give us nice ending but twisting it made it so unrealistic coz a good ending is not always a happy scene.most people dig ironic endings.and whats more ironic than emily's death?she died alone on her bed due to heart failure...
You know all u have to do is read the history on her(what's out there) then watch the interviews about the creators and actors concepts and view about her... Then u can actually understand that the show was never meant to be an actual depiction of what her life was... It was based on her life is true..big the people commenting and bashing the show probably need to loosen up a little bit... Calm down
“From the wounded soul, comes poetry and music. In return, music and poetry heals the soul.🎶 I came across this quote in a hauntingly beautiful poetry book, “12:12 Midnight” by Danielle Ever Rose
Well to begin with, the show did capture most of the things right. As far as the show is concerned, it's really just an adaptation of Emily's personality that would fit with today's generation. And of course, no one could get everything fully correct, so basically you are free to draw your own conclusions with what you believe.
Do people know that this is not an biographical show? Yess it IS BASED on Emily's life but it is not meant to be exactly like that. Enjoy the show people. It's fun. I don't think that is fair to rate it not well just because it isn't really like Emily's real life.
As a poet who has self published 3 books I wondered if I would enjoy the E.D. movie. You saved me the time. I have books of her and her contemporaries works. She was sad like most poets of truth, and probably did whatever she wanted to behind closed doors. Thank you for the clips...
I want to start watching it but at the same time I kinda wanna wait until season 2 comes out so I dont have to wait to see what happens after season 1😂
It is highly contested that she was not really a recluse. Yes, she had depressive tendencies, but the reclusively was an image created by her brother's mistress.
Interesting vid! I love this show! I don’t think this video is meant to be a critique of the show’s historical inaccuracy. It seems more like a fun examination of small things that are inaccurate in a show that’s not meant to be totally accurate. Of course Hollywood takes creative liberties in period pieces. I can enjoy the show’s fantasy-esque story and appreciate this video’s historical analysis. I learned a lot anyway :) Definitely do season 2!
I only watched this show because Hailee Steinfeld was in it but I actually enjoyed it and have become interested in Emily Dickinson’s life and we are doing a project on her in school soon and we’re told to watch it anyway. Need to find out what was real and what wasn’t
Cammie Linford I disagree. I have my American studies professor who is obsessed with talking about Thoreau. I am also an English major, but have never heard them speak of Thoreau.
Reception about Thoreau is mixed. Watch Mojo is wrong, it was documented that his mother did his laundry. The disagreement in literary circles is more about if that should discredit him and how much of what he spoke about was exaggerated, not easily proven facts like his mother did his laundry.
I love this series, I became curious with the characters and found out that some episodes are not true(obviously), which led me to discover the original poems are indeed work of a true genius. Thanks to Dickinson and to Emily Dickinson herself💕👏
I haven't watched it, but I have seen the preview, and I live in Amherst, right on the same street as the Dickinson Homestead, (not that means nothing) but, one of my pet peeves about time period pieces is when they talk like we modern ppl do, have perfect skin and teeth like we do, smoke mass produced cigarettes like we do, etc. And one thing I know for sure, ED did not use the word "Dude".
@@mimi-sk2ip It's not enough of a make or breaker for me to not bother watching it. Just a lil artistic criticism of time period pieces. A work of art/film/tv show doesn't have NO VALUE, period, just cos we project our modern sensibilities onto it, aka "dude" or perfect teeth. I wasn't implying the show is automatically trash, lol. Not about it being a brand of humor, its about historical accuracies, but I can live with it and still get something from the show. lol.
@@rasclotify Exactly, that is also my main contention. Promoting the show as inspired by her life takes away for it being of historical value. Yes, I know that it isn't supposed to be a biography of her life... But they really messed up by not going that route. Modern twists inspired by literature have been done before with other stories and plays (Example Shakespeare) as for this show it doesn't work. Edit: Now if this show was done by Pbs on Masterpiece it would likely be more historically accurate.
I like how period pieces are adopting modern mannerisms and accents to loosen up the acting. I think that's a great idea! The next step will be getting period acting typical of it's time but without the wooden acting period pieces are prone to.
i love the show even though alot of it isnt factually and historically correct. i feel like most of the show is to bring comfort to wlw youth of our generation and having a good chunk of the show be both factually correct in the representation of Emily Dickenson's life and be goofy for todays modern youth was a very good choice for the screen writers and producers of "Dickenson" to make. It was definitely fun and hilarious to watch.
There was a certain episode where Emily met Louisa May Alcott, the author of "Little Women," was that historically accurate? Did she actually meet her?
MsMojo: Dickinson has finally vindicated scholars around the world who've been arguing that Emily and her best friend, Susan Huntington Gilbert, were in love for decades. Me: And it has also vindicated me for giving me Hailee Steinfeld's character finally smoochin' a lady!
Agreed, Hailee Steinfeld was the perfect person to play Emily Dickinson. With her looking quite similar to her but also the very close dates with their birthdays, They honestly couldn't have found anyone better to play the role.
History is crazy, never is exact, with limited resources… I writing a book about Mary Read the Pirate who dress like a man for an easier life but there’s so much missing… Been researching for 2 days and can’t find a name for Mary Reads mother as she was a big influence on Mary Reads life
I cannot remember her name but that is this is the girl from the remake of True Grit. She was so good in True Grit, I'm glad to see her back on the screen. Thought she fell off the map.
so many men acting like literary gods in these comments afraid to acknowledge emily and sue’s romantic relationship is hilarious to me. *sighs, grabs Open Me Carefully from the shelf, proceeds to read the unedited, very romantic, very erotic, very gay letters between emily and sue*
“Susie… come home… and be my own again, and kiss me as you used to… I hope for you so much, and feel so eager for you… that the expectation… makes me feel hot and feverish, and my heart beats so fast.” -Emily Dickinson but theyre just friends right? you know how you passionately kiss your friends and get all flushed thining about them, totatally straight XD
This show is comedy. It’s not meant to be a hyper realistic version of her life. I never knew to much about Emily Dickinson all I knew is she was a poet ( bc my name is Emily so I liked her when I was younger) but this show has made me want to learn more about the real Emily Dickinson and read her poetry.
To be fair, in that one scene Lavinia asks Emily about her sexuality, I love the answer given: it's sue, it's always been Sue. Emily Dickinson never loved men or Women, only Sue and I feel like that's the closest answer we can get to the truth about that🙃
As an future female author, I am inspired by Emily Dickinson being a writer in a time when female writers were looked down upon. Though I don't agree with her apparent sexuality, I do enjoy the poems I have read by her. Even if they were a bit unconventional. And it is important for people to know which parts of the series were historically accurate and what was probably artistic license. But also, I hated Othello. It was even more depressing than Hamlet and the bad guy got away with it.
@@jailai4905 I think you misunderstood what I said. Having an opinion is quite different from an irrational fear, which is what a phobia is. I'm not attacking Emma Dickinson for who she was. I generally like her as an author.
Emily was such a misunderstood person. What we do know is that she was one of the greatest poets in history and one who endeavored despite little, if any, encouragement.
I studied Emily Dickinson and went to umass in Amherst ....no one knows for sure if she was a lesbian and I highly doubt it...she hardly lived a wild, rebellious lifestyle either
@Florides BB They retrieved love letters between her and Sue and between her and Otis Philips Lord, so she was likely bisexual since she appears to have romantic feelings for both. Do you write to your female friends love letters with sexual undertones? If you do, then you can make your point then. Feel free to search up her letters with Sue and make your own speculation if you don't believe others.
It's funny how they show things that were historically wrong like her complaining about doing household chores then outright say that a man she sent flirtatious letters to was wrong
Also her personality, tho rebellious, was not outright rude and she didn't want to be a writer. She literally requested her sister to burn all her poems when she died
Henry David Thoreau was confirmed to have his mother do his laundry, I'm not sure what source they pretended to use but it's pretty wildly agreed in literary circles that he exaggerated his solitude to exclude how his mother assisted him. The disagreement in said circles is more about if it made him a hypocrite. Really disappointed, you don't need my literature degree to know this; it shows up immediately on google with credible sources
There's a lot of evidence to support that she was bi, not lesbian. Though her relationship with Sue seems to be her most meaningful. Unfortunately, it's something we will never know for certain.
I enjoyed the film A Quiet Passion. I can appreciate giving Emily a Modern spin but the Millennial dialogue will inevitably age the work. (I have not seen it, so my comment is based on this vid alone.)
Thats why time travel would be great of course with dampeners to prevent the travelers from changing anything so they could write about actual history that happened

I just love that hailee plays the rol, she did such a great job as always 🤗🤗😍😍
Fr
Honestly, I just came here to know if she was really gay or not lmao
she wasn't
@@-forest-3117 lmao she was bruhh
@@-forest-3117 shes bi
she was bi
I really liked Louisa May Alcott episode. I wish Emily and Louisa could have actually met irl. Their interaction on the show was epic.
When Louisa spoiled Little Women in one sentence which was a small idea 🤣🤣🤣
I love how Little Women came out a month after tho did.
Hopefully Emily doesn’t die in the show. And hopefully sue and Emily stays together.
Well, they showed her death, but in a more light sense of it...they wanna give us nice ending but twisting it made it so unrealistic coz a good ending is not always a happy scene.most people dig ironic endings.and whats more ironic than emily's death?she died alone on her bed due to heart failure...
Hailee was born to play Emily Dickinson ❤️
And Ella to play sue !
Agreed! Hailee and Emma were the perfect fit for this project!
@@summergreen4052 ella 🥰
hehe stan hailee steinfeld
Stan since PP2
YES
the gag though
i think we should start a company: "stan hailee steinfeld for clear skin"
You know all u have to do is read the history on her(what's out there) then watch the interviews about the creators and actors concepts and view about her... Then u can actually understand that the show was never meant to be an actual depiction of what her life was... It was based on her life is true..big the people commenting and bashing the show probably need to loosen up a little bit... Calm down
Hailee's hair is absolutely gorgeous.
“From the wounded soul, comes poetry and music. In return, music and poetry heals the soul.🎶
I came across this quote in a hauntingly beautiful poetry book, “12:12 Midnight”
by Danielle Ever Rose
I really really wanna watch the show but I’m confused on what it’s about. What type of genre is it and is it a good show?
This is a really beautiful quote ❤🔥💯
Well to begin with, the show did capture most of the things right.
As far as the show is concerned, it's really just an adaptation of Emily's personality that would fit with today's generation.
And of course, no one could get everything fully correct, so basically you are free to draw your own conclusions with what you believe.
Do people know that this is not an biographical show? Yess it IS BASED on Emily's life but it is not meant to be exactly like that. Enjoy the show people. It's fun. I don't think that is fair to rate it not well just because it isn't really like Emily's real life.
None of these surprise me. Do any of them surprise you?
As a poet who has self published 3 books I wondered if I would enjoy the E.D. movie. You saved me the time. I have books of her and her contemporaries works. She was sad like most poets of truth, and probably did whatever she wanted to behind closed doors. Thank you for the clips...
Lysander Periwinkle and Tybalt Butterfly them weird beautiful boys 😂😂😂
me: * doesn’t hit like through the whole video *
video: * shows clip of emily and sue cuddling *
me: *smashes like button while squealing in gay*
Why is this show only IMDb 7.1? It's a very good show. Especially Hailee Steinfeld's performance was the best.
I'm in love with this show.
Ooh, they even included "Because I could not stop for Death", that's my favorite Emily Dickinson poem!
I want to start watching it but at the same time I kinda wanna wait until season 2 comes out so I dont have to wait to see what happens after season 1😂
Well the first three episodes of season two are out now!
Emily was for sure bi
Like me 🥰
Certain people sure want to claim that for political reasons.
wait wasn't she gay
She definitely wrote some poems dedicated to Sue, but Sue's name was omitted when originally published.
@@jenniferliu158 she also had feelings for some male judge called otis
It is highly contested that she was not really a recluse. Yes, she had depressive tendencies, but the reclusively was an image created by her brother's mistress.
But did not she stop attending the church?
John mulaney?!? Why is this the most shocking thing to me
Most people in my English major cohort were pretty set against Thoreau- I dunno that he’s so well-liked these days.
Cammie Linford I disagree. I have my American studies professor who is obsessed with talking about Thoreau. I am also an English major, but have never heard them speak of Thoreau.
What are the arguments against him?? I fucking love him. I'm curious though.
Reception about Thoreau is mixed. Watch Mojo is wrong, it was documented that his mother did his laundry. The disagreement in literary circles is more about if that should discredit him and how much of what he spoke about was exaggerated, not easily proven facts like his mother did his laundry.
... Because i could not stop for death
He kindly stopped for me...
😣 The chills.
I just had a whole essay about her
Tia Thompson was it good?
@@Jo_Mama710 I sure hope it was 😅
Tia Thompson lol
let me read it
@@user-hc2oz8fz6i lol
I love this series, I became curious with the characters and found out that some episodes are not true(obviously), which led me to discover the original poems are indeed work of a true genius. Thanks to Dickinson and to Emily Dickinson herself💕👏
I haven't watched it, but I have seen the preview, and I live in Amherst, right on the same street as the Dickinson Homestead, (not that means nothing) but, one of my pet peeves about time period pieces is when they talk like we modern ppl do, have perfect skin and teeth like we do, smoke mass produced cigarettes like we do, etc. And one thing I know for sure, ED did not use the word "Dude".
lol so dont watch it. this show is self aware and if you're not into that kind of humor nobody's forcing you to see it
@@mimi-sk2ip It's not enough of a make or breaker for me to not bother watching it. Just a lil artistic criticism of time period pieces. A work of art/film/tv show doesn't have NO VALUE, period, just cos we project our modern sensibilities onto it, aka "dude" or perfect teeth. I wasn't implying the show is automatically trash, lol. Not about it being a brand of humor, its about historical accuracies, but I can live with it and still get something from the show. lol.
Yeah mass represent!!
I love Dickinson
emily dickinson videos keep getting recommended to me so, here i am
Love this show ❤
I like how period pieces are adopting modern mannerisms and accents to loosen up the acting.
Great video!!! I love Emily Dickinson and Hailee Steinfeld and knowing more about who she was and the facts is great 👍
POV: you wanted to see if she was going to say anything about sue🤣
There was a certain episode where Emily met Louisa May Alcott, the author of "Little Women," was that historically accurate? Did she actually meet her?
No it’s not but that was still so much fun on the show!
Nope...most of it are just her imagination, like when she met walt whitman but in real life they never met
"They were just really good friends" like really really good friends 🤣
I needed this I was so curious
I was hoping this video would happen!
Really? THE Hailee Steinfield??!!! But she nailed it gurllll! I really love it. Really love her voiceeee
I'm gonna re-watch Dickinson series.I'm not yet over with Emisue feels.Amazing women.
Hailee Is my favorite actress
I loved it!! Hoping for more seasons
I think it’s crazy they got someone who looks so similar to play her
Agreed, Hailee Steinfeld was the perfect person to play Emily Dickinson. With her looking quite similar to her but also the very close dates with their birthdays, They honestly couldn't have found anyone better to play the role.
SO Glad they did make the changes tho Loved this show
I mean like, it was meant to be a comedy, it’s not supposed to imitate everything in history
her poems can be sung to the tune of Yellow Rose of Texas
I just think history is interesting enough without random inaccuracies for no reason
So much of the show would never have happened to anyone in that period, the show is basically a fiction.
Bethan like every historian books, bc we will never hav the opportunity to be there
Billie Elish songs are so dead on
Emily is me walking up to the wall 😂
I can't believe the show already ended, I miss it already😭😭
Where may I watch this series?
While she never met Thoreau, a lot of what was said of Thoreau was true, exaggerated for comedic effect, but true.
History is crazy, never is exact, with limited resources… I writing a book about Mary Read the Pirate who dress like a man for an easier life but there’s so much missing… Been researching for 2 days and can’t find a name for Mary Reads mother as she was a big influence on Mary Reads life
Very very great list I like it a lot
Thank you a lot for like my comment
I am in love with her if i could ever get a tattoo it'll be "i could not stopped for death so he kindly stopped for me"
I cannot remember her name but that is this is the girl from the remake of True Grit. She was so good in True Grit, I'm glad to see her back on the screen. Thought she fell off the map.
Pitch perfect 2 , bumblebee and more
Her name is Hailee Steinfeld. She also starred in Hawkeye the Marvel Disney Plus series alongside Jeremy Renner.
so many men acting like literary gods in these comments afraid to acknowledge emily and sue’s romantic relationship is hilarious to me. *sighs, grabs Open Me Carefully from the shelf, proceeds to read the unedited, very romantic, very erotic, very gay letters between emily and sue*
“Susie… come home… and be my own again, and kiss me as you used to… I hope for you so much, and feel so eager for you… that the expectation… makes me feel hot and feverish, and my heart beats so fast.” -Emily Dickinson
but theyre just friends right? you know how you passionately kiss your friends and get all flushed thining about them, totatally straight XD
Emily Dickinson never loved men or Women, only Sue and I feel like that's the closest answer we can get to the truth about that🙃
I love the show!!
Best drama,comedy show
8:08 What's truly wrong at Number 2 is not so much that Emily goes to visit Thoreau, so much as how badly George pronounces "Concord".
I do wish they would have given her auburn hair. Her red hair made her stand out and I think that would have given her character a charming appeal.
me: (while waiting for the 1st) hmm, I think it's her loving sue
revelation: oop- it is, xD
As an future female author, I am inspired by Emily Dickinson being a writer in a time when female writers were looked down upon. Though I don't agree with her apparent sexuality, I do enjoy the poems I have read by her. Even if they were a bit unconventional. And it is important for people to know which parts of the series were historically accurate and what was probably artistic license. But also, I hated Othello. It was even more depressing than Hamlet and the bad guy got away with it.
we don't stan homophones
@@jailai4905 I think you misunderstood what I said. Having an opinion is quite different from an irrational fear, which is what a phobia is. I'm not attacking Emma Dickinson for who she was. I generally like her as an author.
Han She ur still a homophobe
@@hanshe4474 thats homophobic. it doesn’t mean ur scared to death it means u discriminate people because of their sexuality.
@@anuwamy969 phobia means scared to death and there is something called freedom of speech and not agreeing on something
So they got a lot of important parts right, like her personality and family and close ones
Emily was such a misunderstood person. What we do know is that she was one of the greatest poets in history and one who endeavored despite little, if any, encouragement.
She's in love with a woman. The love of her life 💖
I studied Emily Dickinson and went to umass in Amherst ....no one knows for sure if she was a lesbian and I highly doubt it...she hardly lived a wild, rebellious lifestyle either
Let the gays have her
@Florides BB They retrieved love letters between her and Sue and between her and Otis Philips Lord, so she was likely bisexual since she appears to have romantic feelings for both. Do you write to your female friends love letters with sexual undertones? If you do, then you can make your point then. Feel free to search up her letters with Sue and make your own speculation if you don't believe others.
@Florides BB Do you write poems and love letters about your female friends?
Cheryl Councilman why did they add this to the story...
It's funny how they show things that were historically wrong like her complaining about doing household chores then outright say that a man she sent flirtatious letters to was wrong
Also her personality, tho rebellious, was not outright rude and she didn't want to be a writer. She literally requested her sister to burn all her poems when she died
@@quinnd1878 not her poems but ger letters
Henry David Thoreau was confirmed to have his mother do his laundry, I'm not sure what source they pretended to use but it's pretty wildly agreed in literary circles that he exaggerated his solitude to exclude how his mother assisted him. The disagreement in said circles is more about if it made him a hypocrite. Really disappointed, you don't need my literature degree to know this; it shows up immediately on google with credible sources
Love from Egypt for you
Emily😘
There's a lot of evidence to support that she was bi, not lesbian. Though her relationship with Sue seems to be her most meaningful. Unfortunately, it's something we will never know for certain.
5:00 she learnt volcanoes from sue 😅
I enjoyed the film A Quiet Passion. I can appreciate giving Emily a Modern spin but the Millennial dialogue will inevitably age the work. (I have not seen it, so my comment is based on this vid alone.)
I watched the series because of the gayness and I loved it.
The show is amazing!!
Thats why time travel would be great of course with dampeners to prevent the travelers from changing anything so they could write about actual history that happened
