Well spotted, this mv was indeed shot in a single take. If you notice, you can see Kai picking up his hat when he accidentally dropped it and in the Chinese version Suho accidently stamps Sehun's foot. If you are interested you can check out the Chinese version too. There is also a version 2 of Growl both in Korean and Chinese which is more like a regular mv 🙂

As you discovered, the performance version of EXO's "Growl" is a one-take video, which means that it was shot all in one take without any cuts or edits. However, although it is a one-take video, this does not mean they used the very first take, it just means that every time anyone made a mistake, they had to start all over again from the very beginning. While filming this MV they had to dance the choreography about 7 times and this was the take the director and producer decided to use. They actually danced this choreography for the filming of this MV until they physically could not do it anymore.
But not even this take was technically "perfect." If you notice, Kai (EXO's main dancer) drops the hat in the middle of the dance in the Korean version and he smoothly bends down and picks it up. (The stealing of the hat is actually part of the choreography.) As you saw, Kai needed the hat at the end. But because it was done so effortlessly that most people don't even notice the mistake, or assume it's just part of the choreography, the director and editors decided to use this footage anyway.
And if you watch the Mandarin version, if you look closely, you will see Suho (EXO's leader) steps on Sehun's foot and Sehun (EXO's youngest member, a main rapper and dancer) swats him as if to say, "hey, watch out.". :D.
Fun fact: Those aren't just suits that they are wearing. Those are individualized school uniforms. The unaltered versions would be what Korean students would wear when attending school. What makes EXO's uniforms special is that no two uniforms were the same, each member has their own version. (Although school uniforms have been the norm for most girl groups as a concept, EXO was one of the very first boy groups to use the concept in their MVs. And after "Growl" was released, almost all boy groups that came after them have had at least one MV where they wore school uniforms as part of the concept for the song.)
In the beginning of the performance MV, you start out by seeing 6 of the members, and as the camera spins around, you see the other 6 members. In the Korean version, you see the EXO-K (Korean) members featured first in the two groups. and if you watch the EXO-M (Mandarin Chinese) version, you will see the EXO-M members featured more prominently. (Anything that takes place before 2014, you will see all 12 members involved.)
However, what is even more impressive about "Growl", is the fact that they filmed 4 versions of the "Growl" MV, so not only did they have to perfect the dance in the Korean performance version, but they also had to do it again in the Mandarin version and then again in both the 2nd MV versions. And it wasn't like they could use the same footage, because the Korean and Mandarin versions aren't exactly the same -- the EXO-M and EXO-K members had different parts in each of the MVs -- so that just adds another element to this.
EXO actually filmed 5 different videos for the song "Growl." There is still one more video that was released as part of their "Wolf" and "Growl" promotions. There is a drama video that combines their two songs "Growl" and "Wolf" and it's like a mini K-drama that is more like a movie or TV show with a complete story and the members playing characters. If you notice, the camera movements are actually part of the choreography, because the camera is another character in the performance. Just like in"Wolf" and "Call Me Baby," etc., the camera is supposed to represent the girl that they are singing to. So that is why they are looking at the camera so intensely because they are trying to get the girl's attention. They are each trying to impress her with their moves.
If you look up the lyrics for "Growl," you will see they are pretty much acting like a wolf or beast that can no longer control themselves around the girl, and they are warning her to be careful because all she does is make them want to growl and grab her and possess her, etc. "I’m warning you just in case (listen carefully)

Some believe that the "girl" that EXO is always singing about and you sometimes see in their MVs is a manifestation of the heart of the Tree of Life and that is why the members are always rescuing or protecting the girl, etc. And why all their songs are about being in love with a girl or being controlled by the power of the girl, such as in their song "Overdose" for example. Or how they talk about knowing they are bad news for the girl but they want her anyway and they can't help it, but in the end, they know they might destroy her -- as they say in the lyrics of their song "Monster," etc., etc. When you think of the girl as the heart of the Tree of Life the mystery begins to unfold even more.
EXO got so good at this choreography that they were able to perform the whole thing live on award shows and music programs just like they did in the MV, all while singing live as well. "Growl" and their one take performance is what launched EXO into superstardom and it's what made them the most popular group in Korea. It's one of the reasons why the government has given EXO the title of Korea's national boy group.
However, "Growl" came out in 2013, about a year after EXO debuted, and up until that point EXO wasn't very well known or popular. When they first debuted, many people called them "SM's biggest mistake." Because the concept of them being aliens from Planet Exo and the fact that they were designed specifically to debut in both Korea and China and several foreign Chinese members were chosen specifically to make up their own sub-unit, etc., many people had a hard time understanding how EXO would ever be successful. The group started out being branded as SM's first failure, and they thought Lee SooMan (the founder of SM) was crazy for coming up with the group.
But when the one-take video for "Growl" was released, everyone began to take notice. This video was pretty groundbreaking, no group had done a one take video quite like this and it proved to the mainstream audiences that SM really did know what they were doing. Now everyone in Korea and around the world knows EXO and they have become one of the most popular groups that are one of the biggest money-makers for SM. "Growl" has become what they are most known for.
"Growl" is nicknamed South Korea's second national anthem, so you may start to notice that you hear it used everywhere. It's played all over the place and is used as background music, etc. in a lot of things.
EXO even performed this song, along with their song "Power," at the closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics in 2018, and both songs were Olympic theme songs that could be heard at venues and events throughout the games that year. EXO was the only Kpop group to be asked to perform at the Olympics that year, which just goes to show you how influential and popular they have become.

They did a very dated, cringy but hysterical mini drama with performance called Beauty and the Beast for award shows with two short videos, one with EXO-K Centre Kai taking the main role and one with EXO-M Centre Luhan taking the lead (The pink haired good looking man). It is loosely inspired by the Twilight series and was the beginning of the craze for wearing school uniforms for MVs. For fun, it is worth catching both mini dramas and the performance.

Wolf is the first mv that the 12 sang and dance together and gave them their first win. Growl is the repackage album song and made them huge.
Growl is like a continuation of wolf. The lyrics of both are a bit sus if you don't know the concept.
In wolf they suppose to be wolves that can turn into ppl and have a lot of strength, the song is from the point of view of a wolf that fell in love with a human girl and at first is trying to deny those feelngs cause they making him weak, and the other wolves of the group telling him to just "eat her" so he will be strong again but then he gives in into those feelings so in Growl he is telling the other wolves and anyone else that if anyone touches her he gonna hurt them.
EXO has a lot of songs based in fairy tales. This 2 are beauty and the beast inspired.
They have a song called peter pan, self explained, and another one called "Baby don't cry" based on the little mermaid (the original version not disney) but from the point of view of the prince that found out that in order for the mermaid to live she has to kįłľ him so she wouldn't turn into sea foam. It's sang in the korean version only by Baekhyun, D.O, Suho and Chanyeol.

And also to let you know this video was one take that's why you can see mistakes in the video because they didn't stop butt EXO played it cool and did it amazingly. And yes there is a Chinese version but also a very different version of the video as well it's called growl second version. Also fun fact the building they shot growl in is an old abandoned psychiatric place where they said ghost were seen in the video

If you guys want, there's a mini drama with 2 episodes regards Growl with all 12 Exo members, with Luhan as main character. There's also a VCR (Wolf+Growl) of Twilight theme that actually Kai as main character. It actually goes well with the lyrics of Wolf and Growl (their senior SHINee's reaction to the VCR is 😂). That's why in the live performance 2013 performance, Kai and Luhan has a face-off clash performance.
Also there's predebut audition videos of Exo in YT, there's also trainee Chanyeol, Kai and Suho in their senior TVXQ's video Hahaha song. Exo members have collaborations with their other seniors SNSD too. They were already great friends with SHINee.

Guys, thanks for another EXO reaction! Two things: 1) your words about lice.... 😅 EXO used to live together in one dorm (some starting with the training period, others after debut). The first four years into their career they weren't even allowed to leave the dorm on their own volition, didn't have any phones to call their families, had to live in 2s-3s in one room, shared bathrooms and the little of food their company provided for them, and were allowed to see their families only twice a year for two most important holidays. Suho would share his meat portion with Sehun as with the youngest who was still growing and needed more protein which was scarce. I blame SMEnt for stealing their youth and depriving them of normal nutrition (imagine their height if they've had proper food!) and basic needs (as the right to see family and get their support). Young idols of present day don't have to suffer like that but for EXO to stay so humble and caring for people after all they had to endure to reach their position in the world culture is just mind blowing! And yet, this all was happening at the time Growl was conquering the charts all over Asia and even globally. This song alone built the whole second office building for SMEnt (as one of older idols said: in another label EXO would've been board members for all the good things they've done for their company literally saving them from going bankrupt) and the shitty treatment is all EXO got for their hard work and losing health for SME... If you watch Hear Me Out mv one day, see it as the reverse version of EXO's youth: food in abundance, access to phones, chilling and relaxing, going out for fun, sleeping late, and so on. In reality they were fainting on stage because of malnutrition and overwhelming workload.
2) Growl WAS made in one shot, you can even see how Kai lost his cap but managed to put it back on right as he was delivering his rap, he made up for his mistake seamlessly.
Edit: what I meant to say about that lice joke is that EXO at that time were so close 24/7 sharing rooms, bathrooms and food, that sharing a cap was nothing at all for them. They ARE brothers off camera too.

The video with the infamous “ghost”. If you look at the shots showing the windows/glass panels, you can see a figure on the rightmost panel. EXO members claimed it was a staff member, but the mystery hasn’t really been resolved. Plus, this video was filmed in an abandoned school, so who knows who, or what, was standing there at the time.
I think wolf is the first time they merge together.
