I had the privilege of tuning the piano for Mr. Borge at the Viterbo University Fine Arts Center. I went out into the hallway to find my wife, and heard a rattling at the door. I opened it, and there he was in a tuxedo and a baseball cap. I said, "Mr. Borge, I'm your piano technician." He replied, "Oh, I'm sorry. I made you work!" That delightful, kind man was as funny off stage as he was on stage.

Just reflecting on this video, and how it has 1.5M views now.
    I never saw that coming.
The video is like some wonderful time machine, complete with VHS imperfections. I am so glad i shared it.

Everyone is rightly lauding Victor Borge (and his son), but Marilyn Mulvay was also phenomenal in this. An amazing singer (what a voice!), an amazing sport, and clearly very comically talented too - the whole thing has to be played dead straight for it to be so funny, and she carried it off magnificently. Yes there were those who suffered horrible discrimination, and many healing medicines hadn't been developed yet, but Sunday night was the night when my generation turned on the black and white television and watched the best talents ever. They truly paved the way for every generation to follow but will never duplicate... Its too bad so many young people will never know and cannot imagine how important performances like this were to us, thrilled us, and made us laugh.

That's why we grow old and die. We're in the way of progress, be it good or bad. I can not help comparing it to not having interest in, and knowing what it was like to endure an Indian attack while trying to move into an untamed west. Still, it seems more and more important to me that we should be able to somehow be able to recall and experience viscerally, without the benefit of knowing the future, to be able to experience the agony and the wonders of the past. It would frighten me to be transported to a mideival time to witness the struggle and hardship they endured but, if science ever figures out how to transport us to anyplace in the past that we want, I'm sure it would help to put things in better perspective, and put humanity on a much better coarse.😮

My parents saw Borge's one-man show on Broadway in the early 1950s. I got to see him at the Valley Forge Music Festival in the 1980s, twice. He was still extraordinary! What a wonderful man!

Classical music is still popular centuries on. Comedy based mostly upon it is too.
The real mystery, if there is one, is simply why it isn't _more_ popular and well known.
Everyone seems to want something new these days. New is absolutely no measure of how great a thing is.
      Imo, quite the opposite, usually.
New stuff can be good, obviously.
But classics like this will hopefully remain eternal, so that new talent can set their goals high.

Think what is really amazing about Mr. Borge is this incredible ability to process complicated music and at the same time have another part of his brain be doing the comedic part.
Most people would just be happy to play a complex piece of music and all their effort and focus would be singularly directed at it.
Imagine being so talented at the piano, that it’s almost “an afterthought” to him

Mr. Borge asked how many world renowned pianists can you name? They came up with 4 or 5 names. Mr. Borge asked "And how many of them have a comedy act?".
