Would you ride the night bus to Danang? 🇻🇳

  • 🇻🇳 After our crazy adventure in the last video through the jungles of Gia Lai, we returned to the capital city of the province, Pleiku. Pleiku is an interesting city with one very special quality: it's full of crazy people racing motorbikes.
After a night in Pleiku it was time for me to head of to Danang. I decided to take another night bus, but this time was very special. It was a $15 VIP "limousine" seat, as it's called in Vietnamese. Would I get kidnapped? Mugged? Have a restless night of sleep? Join me and find out.

I remember Pleiku very well. I was there from 1967 to 68. I can't believe how much it has changed. It is so busy and all those businesses. It is like night and day. Many roads were not paved then. People always treated me nice as well I treated them. I now go to barbershop in my state of Maryland USA that is owned and operated by Vietnamese and next door is a Vietnamese restaurant and enjoy there hospitality always.

i've had friends that went to Vietnam and they said "it's not a dictatorship" or "authoritarian regime" they have suffred so much that the government doesn't put pressure on its people .... anyway that is what they said to me I've had former French soldiers and also US soldiers that told me "the beauty of the country and gentle nature of the Vietnamese was incredible "

It’s a chill attitude. The government generally let’s people do their thing. That’s why a lot of shops are peoples home. They just live upstairs. Moreover the police and officials won’t bother tourists so it’s a great safe and inexpensive trip on vacation.

As long as it's not about politics, you'll be able to say whatever you want here. In the West however, if you dare speak your mind about "sensitive" topics like race, skin tone, gender, abortion, or oil, get ready to have your life socially ruined.

Once I got off the bus late at night middle of sleep to use the pit stop toilet without taking note of the bus #. My wife was in deep sleep and didn’t want to wake her. With no knowledge of Vietnamese it was a very scary moment trying to get back on the right bus. My wife not finding me on the bus in the morning would have been a sight to see. Here, when he said "Vâng, vì cháu...à chú khổ lắm".
He was mainly talking about himself being poor and having a difficult life. "Cháu" here did not mean grandkids, but it means "you". He was talking to you, he calls you "cháu" and he calls himself "chú". Some people even when they are from the South and talk in southern dialect, but if they are talking to people using northern dialect, they can adapt to that dialect just like when he talked to you. Southern people don't say "cháu" when they refer to themselves, they mainly use "con".
For some reason I love talking to "Bắc 54" (Bắc Năm Tư) people because their accent is very unique and specific.
Why did he "vâng" to you? It's just a humble and polite expression, considering you are the customer and he is the service provider. When you live in East Asia/South East Asia long enough, you will know why some older people being polite to younger people. I can't really explain.
And when he was talking about his daughter, he referred to his daughter as "cháu út của chú" (my youngest child). This is not uncommon in northern dialect. I know you learn Vietnamese in the north and have lived in Hanoi for quite a while, you may hear many people say "Chị được mấy cháu rồi?" (How many kids that you have?) . "Cháu" here basically means "kids", not "grandkids". Vietnamese is hard. If context is not given, one word can have so many meaning. When you hear people say "Khi nào chị mới có cháu để bế?" (When will you get to hold your grandkids?) Then it means "grandkid". Sometimes we have to know the context.

At 33:15 he said he failed on his business plans and now he’s at this age there’s no coming back from it so Grab is the only way.
He said he’s genuinely poor no sugarcoating.
At 33:44 he said his dad is (lính ngụy) meaning his dad fought for the South Vietnamese Army which allied with the USA during the Vietnam civil war. The South lost and Children of those soldiers are often treated poorly and were given little to no opportunity to succeed in Vietnam. They were often prejudiced against. You have to disclosed all that information on all of your paperwork so they all know who you are. That’s communism my friends.
I feel for him and his family, I have nothing but respect for a hard working man that’s trying to provide for his family.

  • @douglasinzencultivation597

It's funny how you use euphemism to talk about the urge to go to the bathroom when nature calls by saying "I forgot I have a human digestive system", "That passion fruit smoothie earlier has gone through me", "The pressure is building".
    Love the humor.
I think "Bể kế hoạch" or "Vỡ kế hoạch" is a slang, and can be understood as "Có thai ngoài ý muốn", translated to "Unwanted Pregnancy". It is used for married couples.
33:06 he did not mean "his granddaughter" but he meant "his daughter". his daughter is on grade 10 but his wife is already 60, so he said it was "unwanted pregnancy" that his youngest daughter was born.
33:17 "Bây chừ lớn tuổi rồi". "Bây chừ" is central Vietnamese version of "Bây giờ".
33:20 "Hai anh chị đó có vợ có chồng rồi" means his older children already have their own family.
*talking about "anh chị", which means brother and sister in general. However, if you hear people say "dân anh chị", it basically means "dân giang hồ", "thugs" or "gangsters", or member of the underworld, similar to Yakuza in Japanese or Mafia in the West.
So basically he and his wife are old, but he still has to make money (by working as a Grab xe ôm) to take care of his youngest.
This can be a good listening practice for Chris. You can rewatch this part again to listen. This reminds me so much of the time when I was learning English before.
