Man, I could talk about how much I adore Signalis all damn day, but I may as well touch something that's not really mentioned all that much --- Signalis *looks* absolutely stunning. Not in the realistic or high-fidelity-sense, quite the opposite in fact. Signalis is really good at looking old, like the entire world is decaying, including the "copy" of the game one plays.
For example, something one can't really get from watching an LP is every single UI element has a constant if ever so slight "out-of-focus" look akin to a shit CRT display. Similarly, something that doesn't survive TH-cam's compression is how good the sound design is. It's the only horror game in ages I've played that gave me some similar chills to PT, simply by knowing when and how to place music and folly in certain rooms.
I could go on for awhile, but the message to take away from the presentation is this: Buy Signalis, or play it free on Gamepass. It's worth it.
Commenting to agree. The lighting they have done in the game is probably the best I've seen since F.E.A.R.. I was just awestruck multiple times by it.
The Promise Ending, which requires you to fight it out with the enemies and take your time, is what I got my first time through. I see this as Elster living up to his background as a Soldier. A combat veteran isn't going to be scared of some corrupted replikas, especially not when they're trying to kill her: a Soldier is going to fight back and kill every threat they encounter or die trying. Through Elster's willingness to fight and cut a path through to the ending, it demonstrates that Elster is likewise going to be willing to make the hard decision to follow through with her promise to Ariane by mercy killing her.
Personally, I see the game's meta story and the endings as metaphorical illustrations of the end of a relationship: do you have the strength to end it? will you just slowly bleed out and wait for the relationship to die? Or will you run away and die off in the desert alone. Hell, event he secret ending is just a way of describing a crazy person who refuses to accept the end of a relationship and creates a fantasy of the relationship.
This might be the first time I could play along with both of them, as Signalis hit Gamepass.
Best time with Woolie reading german and Pat applying 20+ years of Survival Horror Knowledge.
This might also be the first Horror Game from germany since "Black Sails" by Deck13.
Really sad that the guys didn't do a spoilercast. Considering that Woolie seems to still have issues to understand what is a Gestalt and what is a Replika, any attempt from him to figure out what happened would have been hilarious.

@@SaberRexZealot They are actual german words, you know? The game has Gestalts (Humans) and Replikas (Robots), but it's not really like Nier.
The robots have "organic" parts and the goverment jumped over the problem of developing a functional AI by just copying real human's brains to serve as personalities but thats it, it doesn't follow the Nier plot.
@@Adser261 To be fair that's not too far from Nier's plot, where Gestalts were the original humans and Replicants were their clones made to work for them. It's not 1 to 1, but it's close.
@@A1D7 The main thing in Nier plot is that humanity is screwed, Replicants are effectively the backup and that is the reason for their existence. In Signalis they are literaly just tools, humanity is fine (well, goverment aside).
Similarity in setting is not similarity of plot
Got the game on launch. Finally had the time to play through it this weekend. First run was on Survival (big mistake) and I played as a humongous coward reloading constantly and unsurprisingly I got the "Left" ending, whereas Pat got "Middle" and Woolie got the "Right" one.
Came out of that very impressed with the game but my views were definitely colored by not getting familiar with the story first on Standard. Went back, did a Standard run the next day, came out of it so emotionally drained and fulfilled I haven't stopped thinking about it since.
This is a damn good game. This is up there as possibly the best horror game narrative I've ever experienced, even.
I don't know if this has been brought up, but we're not dealing with just any space Germany: We're dealing with space EAST Germany. Authoritarian communism with a heavy emphasis on the authoritarian.
Yeah. The Nation is based off East Germany, and since they’re fighting “the Empire” it’s basically a war between the GDR and the Kaiserreich
Funnily enough the ARG keys fix my nitpick problem of Signalis of each room with a ARG key is a room I was confused on why they made those rooms so special feeling yet they lack anything important besides a note at best on your first run also no matter what your thoughts on the ending are at least the key of love description gives more cute details about Elster relationship
Signalis is gonna stick with me for a while. Not gonna lie, I cried. I hope it gets the recognition it deserves.
Yeah, i don't think "Pseudo-Spoilercast" is an accurate term when you can summarize Signalis's premise within "Komm, süßer Tod". It's even in german for extra accuracy!

14:50 I'm going to disagree on the Silent Hill 2 ending. I think it rewards you for playing like that by giving you the best ending first. (Best by emotional impact. Not by outcome.) In that ending the letter hits the hardest. It's also nice to then have the contrast of how the letter then feels much better if you get a better ending after that.
This is my 2nd survival horror game and I have little knowledge of the anime/books/game reference and I felt every emotional beat.

I find it pretty silly to think someone needs to have watched/played any of Signalis' influences to "get it". While I think things like End of Eva or Silent Hill, have similar emotional core's or pallets, they are much less crucial compared to say The King in Yellow or the Paintings. (Even then I didn't know what the paintings were IRL on my first run, but there are other details in game that make the painting significant to the game's narrative.) I think over focusing on Signalis influences can take away from its genuine originality compared to its contemporaries in the gaming space, and compared to it's inspirations. It's not like any of Signalis' influences, didn't have influences.
That being said I think its great to seek out Signalis influences after the fact. Each are their own works of art and have complementing vibes. If someone really liked Signalis but never seen Eva, I would recommend they check it out they might enjoy or get something out of it. Same with Silent Hill, same with RE1.
TL;DR Signalis does (not) think you're smart for watching Evangelion. It might think you're smart for reading The King in Yellow (but I doubt it). ((Also trying saying influences five time in a row.))
If you never found out about the paintings, they are (basically) renditions of a specific painting of charon helping someone into the afterlife.

At the risk of sounding greedy, I want just a little more. Not like a whole game more but like DLC to this game. Perhaps learn more about the Itou sisters. Like if you could play as Gestalt Isa with her knife. Or Adler, maybe a different character all together. Like a Re2 scenario B situation that ties back to OG story. I dont know.
The world is fascinating. But I can live with just this. Has it been confirmed that everything was found in the game?
German is cool. It's got consistent pronunciation rules and the big words are lots of small words with the spaces between them removed lol

I disagree entirely with how these nerds talk about SH2 endings, it's not about how you feel, it's about how James will feel based on how you played him

the in water ending requires james to play like he’s throwing his life, which by survival horrors means just restrictive item usage. the GAME isn’t punishing you for playing it correctly it’s how JAMES would feel throughout your run that matters
i still don’t really think it’s a big deal at the end of the day, i’m not sure why they prattle on about it so long
Man, I was too savy at survival horror and got the leave ending. Probably because I retried like pat did at certain points. It even countef the times I "cheated death" by alt-F4.

This was the video that convinced me to give Signalis a shot and I fell in love with it instantly, just beat it tonight and I'm still turning it all over in my mind. Definitely gonna have to get the other endings and see how I feel then, I'm pretty sure there's a bunch of stuff I missed the first time through and a toooon of stuff that'll make more sense on repeat playthroughs. I think Signalis is easily one of the games of the year and maybe one of the best survival horror games period? I hope we get to see more classic survival horror like it in the future.

My best guess is when you're reading the documents on the Penrose right before you get your ending, particularly the 3000 cycle protocol document. Woolie mentions reading the moment "as dry as possible" for maximum effect, which I think definitely fits the last orders you get for the Penrose Program

The Yellow King book is an important object in the game. The book is real and predates HP Lovecraft, but he liked it well enough to incorporate it into his own work.
If I remember correctly, Signalis also has direct Lovecraftian references as well. If you're a fan of that stuff, check it out! It rules!

For a non spoilercast this sure as hell spoiled Signalis for me. I get that Pat and Woolie both get spoiled on games from social media all the time but it sucks to bring that lax attitude to the podcast and spoil the viewers. That's just being part of the problem.
For the record I don't mind if they talk about spoilers for recent things on the podcast, but actually let the listeners know first. None of this "I'm just going to talk about all these story details that indirectly give away what's going to happen because I think you won't be able to figure it out." Maybe some of us aren't as dumb as you think we are.
At first reading your comment, I thought you were an insane person, because the title of video clearly states, 'Psudeo-SpoilerCast'. Then after reading some other comments, they had changed the title from 'Non spoilercast'. That really sucks.

I don't understand Pat hate-boner towards Silent Hill 4.
A lot of people have hate boners for things that had a lot of potential, have really cool ideas but fall apart as a whole. I have that problem with the last Evangelion rebuild movie, the fact that it seems default to love it leaves me baffled.
Pat has a problem with forming opinions of things from what other people say of it, dialling it up to 11, and claiming it as his own.
It's probably just a somewhat decent horror game for any casual player. I'm not gonna play it when there's other stuff to play personally. Callisto Protocl in like a week lol.
From the way they talk I am not sure they could make a timeline or put together what actually happened at all.

Seriously I don't trust you guys in the slightest with your non spoiler warnings. Pat loves to basically describe stuff in detail without names or places (which isn't as sneaky as he thinks) and Woolie loves to reference drop other games and media until its really obvious what he is talking about with Signalis. They could be way more vague with a game thats like two months old in addition to being slightly under the radar for most people. Just sayin'.

Which is hilarious because these two are some of the biggest spoilerphobes in gaming currently. This same podcast had Woolie threatening to take off his headphones when talking about the Bayonetta 4 story despite the game being out for almost a month at this point.
Real chads get the story spoiled for them first and then go through it and enjoy it anyway.
