I had to buy my 2016 Osprey EXOS 58 one size larger. This is due to herniated discs (L-4 & L-5) B/C I need the shoulder straps to NOT put weight my shoulders. So now they go up to the pack and do not curve around my shoulders. It's called "adjusting to life". But I love the comfort of my EXOS 58.
Many Osprey backpacks come in two sizes, S/M and M/L. Yet most outdoor shops only stock the M/L size and then tell the customer there is only one size.
You can have broad shoulders but that does not determine a larger pack frame size. I have a sort torso but extra long legs. I'm stocky but not overweight, I actually wear a small even though my shirt size is a large. Its important to get that c-7 to iliac crest length and not base it on your body.
If you're sizing yourself up without help, I found measuring from my Adam's Apple to the hip is much easier than trying to do it behind my back. Obviously your body shape/type can affect results, be mindful.
Please can anyone tell me which series is the osprey the lady was wearing During the video I was hoping she will turn so I can catch the name but no luck :(
I've received advice from Osprey Customer Care that the hip-fin (I read hip-belt) should rest on top of the hip bone. In this video here you advise that half of the hip-belt sits on top of the hip bone and the other half below. Which one is true? I am having terrible experience with the hip-belt of Osprey 65 digging into my hips.
I feel this is the eternal question for us women. I was raised in the religion that it shout sit exactly on thw hip bone, that is, having the bone right in the middle of the hip belt. In real life, however, hip belts just don't remain there (nothing to do with brands, I think). I have sort of wide hips and a narrow waist: it just slides up as I walk. I gave up years ago, and now I aim for *on top of* the bone from the outset. Side note: I've always been instructed by male mountaineers... bummer.

For me, it's more natural to rest the pack on top of my hips; none of the weight is carried on my shoulders there. However, I have a bit of a lower tummy pouch from cysts and polyps (sorry for TMI) and I feel like it just squeezes even more of my gut down. So I settled and put it about 1/3 of the way. Lol, this way the belt snatches up my tummy and I just carry a little bit of weight on my shoulders.

Find a good discussion group for backpacking. This is a good one -- caminodesantiago.me. Leave a post with your height and weight and ask what size backpack people have used who are your same size. The good packs -- Deuter and Osprey among others -- will be adjustable so you can fine-tune yours, as long as you get the right size to start with.

Best way is always has been always will be measure your torso length how somebody help you with a soft tape measure and measure your torso length. Then when you go backpack shopping you look at what the Torso length is. Most all backpacks will state a torso fit range. Find one that has your torso range.

Mark Turner use a fabric measuring tape. It’s soft. You can find it at craft and sewing stores or sections at your local grocery store. It’s a few dollars.
I know my response is very late, however, I just got an Osprey pack and sized down. I had to hyper extend the back @3:31 about an inch from the last marking, but it fits great now! Unless you need the volume from the larger pack, I'd size down to cut weight.
Hello, i have the osprey aura 50l womens, but lately it is killing my shoulders. I cannot use it anymore and i think i am not fitting it right. Can you please help me? I am away from home travelling and i have a long trip ahead of me and im clueless wjat to do.
I am 164, 63 kilos, and i also feel that the hipbelt is a bit big, they show it is adjustable by pushing a part inside but when i try it it just does not move. Can i have someone help me please? From osprey customer service? I am very worried especially for my back. I even carried it with a lot less weight on a hike and it was so difficult. I just think i have not adjusted it correctly. if the hipbelt is adjustable and the torso... But i dont know what the issue is. Waiting for a kind reply
Joel Cedric Best to measure your torso to find out what is right for you. Plenty of Videos on TH-cam explaining how to have your torso measured. According to some trustworthy online websites: if your torso falls somewhere between 16-18.5" then you will need to go with the S/M size, and 18.5 and beyond then you'll need to go with the M/L size
I bought a Deuter at REI. The salesperson took all the time I needed to find the right pack and make sure it fit. For backpacks and boots especially, you need expert advice and someone who is willing to take whatever time is necessary to make sure you are buying the right equipment.
Great info but I cant believe that after all that, a “proper fit” is that pack riding so high behind her head. Common dude, Somebody QC THESE VIDS BEFORE THEIR RELEASED.
if on the trail and see this, just walk up to them and push face back so they feel comfortable.. always stop and push faces in on trail. I guarantee you will finish trail before you see the end, my friend. Happy Trails !!!

Osprey is a great backpack company. You are lucky in the US, we don't have a lot of shops in Europe where you can find these great pack.

For the record I have that same pack, in a Large. I'm 6'3" and have a probably pretty long torso.

It depends on the backpack and the length of your torso. Small for one pack may be a diff measurement than a small for another. Good luck!
