Hi, over the last couple of years, i've researched and tried out lightweight hiking/camping carrying options: survival vests, running vests, butt packs, backpacks, military, sports etc. Yours is the best I've come across so far. Your concept is the (1) most compact, (2) most ergonomic and (3) most durable. It has the best weight distribution while giving a slim, dignified silhouette. (Dignified, as in not looking like a green Santa entangled among the forest undergrowth.) Your harness set-up allows manoeuvrability and swift movement through thick tropical jungle and tight urban spaces. The material of the equipment is tough. Together with a slim backpack you reviewed in Feb 2018, your system combines (1) optimal carrying volume with (2) ergonomics (healthy load distribution) and (3) agility. A little musing, if I may, Wonder how if the system can be further improved? It'd be great if the waist harness and the backpack can be better integrated? Currently, when you carry your backpack over your Y harness, there are 4 shoulder straps, and the added load is still on the shoulders. How can the shoulders straps be reduced to just 2, one on each side, when you have both the harness and the backpack on, and still have most of the load on the hips?
Don't listen to TH-cam trolls you would get a lot further than most. Those that complain sit on the couch in front of their computers all day criticizing videos they watch when they have never even been for a simple hike. Keep the videos, I learn a lot from you. I picked up a new y harness from Midway USA I'm picking up a gi belt and I want to attach a few more things so again thank you for the videos
I really like the videos that show mods people make to their gear. These are so helpful for those of us less experienced with the military gear. Great one. Thanks for posting it.
Remember, experience has nothing to do with it, the gear was chosen by the military for a reason, cuz it works........people tend to want the "new" stuff to fit in, why spend $$$$ if you already have things that work. Thanks for watching
I still use it along with all my 782 gear. Old school all the way. Even use the US knife, fork, spoon with mess kit. Full shelter, both halves, all poles and stakes. The one thing that's not original is the canteen cup lid. I actually found that on Ebay and bought an extra one. Fits like a glove! Love all my gear. Got issued Molle II when I went to Iraq (Second War), and supply said we could keep the old but took back the Molle. Even got to keep the sleeping modular system. The old school is still lighter than the Molle. Outstanding!
Thanks for making this video! Got me thinking outside the box and decided to put together my own rig! I had forgotten how comfortable and easily the Y harness carries weight, or maybe i have forgotten!!! (Army 72). I ended up using a little different equipment, belt, bags etc...( I really like the pathfinders bottle/stove bag kit), I decided to add a gas mask bag with thigh strap and a small alice pack! I like this rig better than the store bought packs i have. Thanks again for the inspiration!
I use all the old ALICE belt and Y Harness set it up like I did in the Corps back in 73. Only thing new I use is the USMC Mollee vest under the setup. Liked the vid
I used a MOLLE pack waist belt on mine.... works great... attatched a GERBER Strongarm to one of the pathfinder bottle bags for permament redundant cutting tool or quick access pig sticker... way to go Corporal! Nice rig!
Very good ideas, Thank you very much. I use ALICE gear all the time and it gets me "down the road" ! It also gets me up and down the steep and rugged terrain of the Adirondack Mountains where I do most of my hiking !
About 6 months ago I bought a Swedish harness system with 4 large pouches for cheap at a surplus store. I added my old buttpack to it along with my canteen system, then I promptly forgot all about it. Thanks to this video I'm going to see about loading it out and trying it with my Camelback day bag. It ought to be interesting.
I'm in Britain its not easy to get US stuff because of postage costs but i bought the LBV vest and then added 2 x British bergan pouches its probably twice the weight your carrying and i'm twice s small as you but i use it for camping and its comfortable US butt pack will arrive for it soon as well and i intend to add Camel back hydration.
Humped Alice back in the 1960's, on my one year camping trip to Vietnam. Sometimes I got more than 100 pounds on her, (and she kicked my ass daily!). B Co./3rd/503rd/173rd Airborne (Separate). If someone said that this gear will not work, they have never done anything.
I got out in 76 . Alice packs may be 73 but the corp didn't see them until the 80s My job was web belt , 2 canteens and a first aid kit Along with ammo pouches No pack. Just a rucksack . I can see hiking with your kit. Very light with everything you need for a day or two
Hay Marine, remember, don't sweat the small stuff...and unless it is combat, it is small stuff. Boot camp taught us that words may be loud but they roll off. I think too many complainers are pulling your string. Great kit. Semper Fi
Sean the video before went to a gun show just this last weekend found a Horne's set for 15 could not pass it up now making a similar set up for what I do in South West Yuma AZ love the gear and thank you for your service to our nation
Been using a fox recon buttpack with an H harness for deer hunting, love the way it carries the weight low so less "tippy" on slopes and with my knees being wrecked i dont have to squat way low when going through thick brush, only thing i dont like is how stiff and bulky the shoulder straps are, i might have to try a Y harness of some sort, but with slimmer straps.
i like the older equipment, and i can afford it more easily. Interesting attaching the harness to the butt pack, great idea for weight distribution i will work that idea into my rig
Nice set up! Reminds me of what Dave over at realbigmonkey1 often uses, except he prefers the "H" suspenders. The old school gear really stands the test of time.
Another fine training video Cpl.. Mine is with me, behind the seat of my truck, where ever I go. It however is a ghost of the 60's and early 70's, and not as comfortable by the end of the day. I gotta get me a belt system like yours! Keep up the good work, I enjoy being trained by you.
great video. great info, too. i just bought the Y harness and am looking for the rest of the gear because i like the system and the video is really big-time helpful. so, thank you very much.
I'm going to try a set up with a LBV and see if I can make that work....if I can not I'm prolly going to use this type of set up, i've been playing with this idea as well so it was nice to see it implemented. Good work CPL !
Great vid! I have the dayruck also. Malcolm does fantastic work!I would love to see a vid sometime of the gear you carry in this kit.Keep up the good work.
Love this set up. And your new set up as well. I might do something similar. Hope you don’t mind. Could you do a video on what gear you bring in your pack as well as this set up? Just to show what goes in where? Thanks
Well I wish I had watched this video before I shelled out $200 for a battle belt. Would you consider doing an update on this video only as a light weight "urban bug out" system option? Might mention the 11th "c of survivability". Centerfire cartridges... Lol. That vid would compliment the fighting hole vid quite nicely.
good video on mods. I still have my lcbelt and rucksack from the 80s. Would'nt get a mile down the road. lol that pack has seen thousands of miles and I still use it. I still use the lc belt and harness with canteen when I trout fish. I may just check out one of those belt pads tho and those pathfinder bags look awesome. safe trails..
Why upgrade from the old buttpack, belt and canteens? They serve the same purpose and include the canteen cup will do everything that your rig does at a fifth of the cost? Just the musing of an old 0369...
Ernest Turnage I cant boil in plastic so I upgraded to 40oz stainless instead of 32oz plastic. The stainless is wide mouth. A larger butt pack means I can carry more items. it is also made form 1000 condura which is more durable and weather resistant. This is all covered in the video. Thanks for watching
Really like your rig, I am building something similar, 2 questions, why do you have 2 water bottle holders? and Can you post a link for the blackhawk butt pack?
+THENEWWRANGLER The reason for 2 water bottles is that 2 is 1 and 1 is none. If you boil water in one and then let it cool it could take an hour or more for this process. So I like to have 2 bottles. The black hawk butt pack is discontinued but there are some on ebay and amazon
@Corporals Corner I have a question about the LC2 load bearing harness and pistol belt. I have just received them, set them up with my gear, but was wondering if it was possible to use my Medium Alice Pack (it uses an older Vietnam era X frame) with it, as in maybe attach the pack to the harness so I could use both together in unison. Maybe if there was a way to attach the straps to the harness? or even the pistol belt? (the pistol belt I refer to is the one you showed the diagram in this video.) If you could get back to me, that would be great. I've searched through a lot of videos, and you seem like you really know what you are doing.
if you don't mind please... did you remove the metal belt buck from the old USGI LC-2 belt and place the metal belt buckle onto the blackhawk belt? thank you
I’m a little frustrated to say the least. I can not seem to make the clips open on my Alice suspenders. Is there a trick I’m missing here, are did I get ripped off?
I like this setup, and I understand the 5 Cs; I am just wondering what goes into your consideration for which items go into the butt pack vs the backpack?
not bad. not bad at all my opinion like the padded waist belt. and its hard to heat water in a plastic canteen. but they got metal ones. BALANCE IS PARAMOUNT !!! BUT ENDURANCE (CARDIOVASCULAR) MAKE'S A HELL OF A DIFFERENCE !! LOST MOST OF MY GEAR IN RAINELLE WV FLOOD LAST YEAR. NICE VIDEO CARRY ON FELLOW SURVIVALIST.
I love this video. I would like to know what you carry in your pack and waist packs? How much weight do you carry in each of them? Maybe it is time for an equipment view of your pack. On this video alone I went and bought a y harness and butt pack. Keep them coming.
Watching in 2019, most items have been changed out to newer technology models. Just goes to show how you will never stop upgrading your equipment (read: buying more stuff) 😏
Nice video man, I was wondering which harness you were using in the previous video. Now I know :D Your gear looks extremely comfortable, nothing is loose and everything is tight but not too tight. Excellent. Will think about that setup in the future. Thanks
caveman l the system was designed for soldiers to have their fighting gear on after they dropped their alice pack when they made enemy contact... just wear your pack over the top... good to go...
Nice set up and thank you for the info. I found it informative. I have the same Y harness but I dont recall seeing the snap buttons on it. Did you attach that yourself?
Thanks! I think the Y-harness with the belt set up for carrying gear is better than the new modern load bearing vest systems. In hot weather or if you have to climb steep hills having all that weight around your chest cavity is really restrictive to breathing and also stressful for your lower back.
Thanks for the vids and I enjoy watching your vids but I got 2 quick questions. For this harness, what would this best be used for and when do you mainly use this? Thanks!
Aloha. Olde & proven always has an edge on new & unknown......until the new becomes olde.....if the new was an improvement, it will continue to be used, if not, it will get discarded. Hey great videos big fan of your marine corps style but can you do a video with that belt and body armor vest once again I enjoy watching your channel and learn from them too lol
Danny Hinkle i have almost the same setup except i use a MOLLE pack waist belt... i use a drop leg rig attached via molle on the right side with a QD blackhawk serpa 2 holster for full size Glock...
Come on now Devil, lock those arms out on those push ups, 1....1....1.... Hahaha you look like a shaved bear! I rock the y-harness when I go camping. I like that padded belt support though. Thanks for the video.

Great descriptive and informative video as usual Corporal. You must have educators in your blood line. Outstanding work.
Great system. That brings back some memories. I have to dig my gear out now and reassemble it. Thanks for sharing.
great video. great info, too. i just bought the Y harness and am looking for the rest of the gear because i like the system and the video is really big-time helpful. so, thank you very much.
Yup. My Y-Harness system needs some serious updates. The buttpack I got is trash and still rocking the old plastic canteens.

trying to construct something similar, you wouldn't believe how hard it is to get some of these components here in Canada.

I’m a little frustrated to say the least. I can not seem to make the clips open on my Alice suspenders. Is there a trick I’m missing here, are did I get ripped off?

Can you do a new video on the y harness and and belt rig? Im not having much luck finding a buttpack like that or harness

Watching in 2019, most items have been changed out to newer technology models. Just goes to show how you will never stop upgrading your equipment (read: buying more stuff) 😏
nice set up
looks like I'll be spending my birthday money on this

LBV is great, I use it when shooting, holds mag pouches just fine. Thanks for watching
I use it for the same but my Y is my favorite
Just found and subscribed. Awesome channel and keep up the good work... Get ready for some questions I gotta few coming... Thanks.
Mr. Corporal sir is there a way I can attach my Alice pack to the Y harness
caveman l the system was designed for soldiers to have their fighting gear on after they dropped their alice pack when they made enemy contact... just wear your pack over the top... good to go...
Nice set up and thank you for the info. I found it informative. I have the same Y harness but I dont recall seeing the snap buttons on it. Did you attach that yourself?
yes sir go to 6:53 in the video and I show this. Thanks for watching and for the continued support
Thanks! I think the Y-harness with the belt set up for carrying gear is better than the new modern load bearing vest systems. In hot weather or if you have to climb steep hills having all that weight around your chest cavity is really restrictive to breathing and also stressful for your lower back.

frickin' awesome...I love my alice pack, but have been needing to add a harness and butt pack to the mix...maybe payday..lol
Thanks again for your insight.
Thank you for the continued support and views, you are the man
how would one carry a pistol with that set up?
