I love to crochet and I wanted to try knitting by makinh a sweater so I spent alot of money for yarn and drove to so many Walmarts but when I was halfway through it I was sad tired and I had no motivation so I stopped and then I made a rug out of the yarn and I got a headband out of it so I feel better about my skills in crochet

To add to the hat, I would have glued on less cap mushrooms and done them in small clusters and not all the way around, and then added grass and moss to the top and then roots dangling out of the bottom, there seemed to be too much "dirt" showing, but still a valiant effort!
    My cost sunk cosplay was my Steven Universe OC, I ended up still getting it done but needed to purchase a custom petal skirt for it. Now I've gone and started to turn it into a new outfit, repurposing some pieces and tossing other pieces all to make it into an Autumn fairy ;w;

It’s so cool that you reached out and shared my costume videos in this video! After we spoke briefly I was even reflecting like huh where -did- I get the idea for this? And I remembered my friend @hellofaerie did a red spotted corset and wing set just before I made my hat, we had the aesthetic on the brain and hopped from project to project from there!
I remember in 2018 mostly using the term “toadstool” too and I don’t think that got trendy at all haha!

This is such a cool project, even if you didn't end up loving it! Ironically, if I remember correctly, Dollightful's inspiration for that mushroom hat doll was because she ended up sinking a lot of time and effort into a different doll that didn't turn out the way she wanted it to, so she tried a similar (but tweaked) idea and ended up with that finished product!! Regardless of if you try again on the hat, I think it's great that you turned this into a lesson for yourself. Super inspirational!!!

Nothing makes you look more incomplete than a beautifully crafted top and and then some half finished bottom. It doesn’t matter how beautiful the sword is, if the outfit was made the night before it makes it look like you bought it.

I recently did a cosplay for a con this past weekend and ended up having to give up on making the shirt for it due to time constraints and it just not working. I bought a plain t-shirt to wear instead and people still knew who I was cosplaying as so I felt way better about my failure. I still plan on finishing the shirt at some point but I was glad I stopped when I did and went with a backup plan. So I totally understand that sunk cost. I REALLY wanted that shirt to work but if I stayed up all night to finish it while still not liking the way it looked, I would have been so exhausted and frustrated that I don't think I would have had as much fun. I love that you shared this process, it's something that isn't often shown on social media! Not every project is a winner and that's okay, you get the experience and learn to do things differently or learn new skills from those "failed" projects. I remember when I started sewing/crafting my own cosplays seriously I made a Marth (Fire Emblem) cosplay and I sunk so much time and effort into it as a wee beginner crafter, only to realize I hated the way I looked in the cosplay at the end. I wore it to one convention and then never again, but I learned so many valuable skills from that one ambitious build.

While it might not be living up to your expectations, I think when someone knows what it's supposed to be it feels very "oh, I can see that now!". Either way, I love the video and I love that you talked about the sunk cost fallacy, I think it's so important to know about it, for many reasons.

Oh my gosh that's my ren faire! I cant believe I could have met you, that's so wild! I'm sorry the project didn't turn out how you wanted, but the coffee dye for the stays was BRILLIANT. Hopefully I'll see you at Dragon Con this year!

Your sister is awesome trying SO hard to get it but also be honest. And thank you for highlighting the sunk cost issue when it comes to making, because it's so often a thing and so rarely talked about.
Mine was a piece of embroidery (that was meant to be part of a much bigger project) that would have been fine if I had not started adding more complication to it. It went wrong in so many ways, but the stand out was the cursed rabbit that was done twice and just got more cursed...
Oh - and the "how I would do it" that no one EVER asks for. I think adding in some nicely creepy vines and leaves to give a context that pulled it out of cake territory would be fun, and would add more texture.

Between you and Kamui, I can make anything! I love watching the historical seamstresses but I feel like I learn so much practical sewing from you. Like from start to finish I followed your corset video and go it done in about 5 hours. My mind is blown!!!

Thank you for sharing your efforts, not everything can be a favorite can it though? So glad you are kind to yourself. You have such lovely, adult nuggets of advice/wisdom to share with other makers. I refuse to apologize for bingeing several of your videos while I should have been asleep. Thanks again! ❤

I never thought I would see Dollightfull in one of your videos, but here she is lol- two incredible girls that i love simply because of designing.
I love the fact that you search about the stuff you do, you get to learn and see a bunch of things you never would have thought of- the care you have for the stuff you make is so admirable, and I love every second of it.
Keep doing what you love and we all will be here for it ^^

"Skirts, pockets, boobs" -- you just named all of my favorites. Sarah, you really are my favorite youtube channel these days! Can't wait to run into you at a Con someday and nerd out over the sewn details in our cosplays. Edit: I did want to mention that I just made a structured bodice for a gown that my bff is wearing in a local fashion show & I used a smooth (and still breathable) heavy drapery fabric as the structural layer -- it works beautifully!
Additional Edit: What if you made a little fascinator style ant with giant cordys coming out of it's body? I think the scale may help too :)
As it is, I still like it and those stays -- especially the embroidery -- are gorgeous.

humm if you maybe add the white gill stuff under the mushroom to the bottom of the hat it will pull up the white from the dress, and have fun and make ruffles or someting to the hat to brake up the "ground" brown of the hat. may add moss ? it be fun to tackle it again with a fresh pair of eye and not "give" up on "failed" projects.

46:14 Lately, I've been thinking a lot about art projects at school that I've invested so much money and time into, yet I still got really bad grades, it just ruined my mood everytime it crosses my mind, it has made me lie awake at night crying multiple times. This part of the video felt so specific and directed right at me, its something that really has been bothering me lately, thank you for saying that. The things youre talking about isn't 100% the same as my situation because I cant just quit, its a school project, but it made me feel more ok about my art projects not always going as well as I wanted them to.

also i definitely think this design just needed more time to cook haha. the idea is cool! and other people are saying if you use the iconic frill bits of mushroom it'd read better, and i agree~ maybe you could come back next year with the same design as a redesign challenge? :3

I have taken the sunk cost with composite edits and it is SO heartbreaking, and sometimes you just have to walk away for a hot minute before your brain can tackle it again. So I feel this, but that ant is the cutest bean and I love him. O_O

I also have had moments where I've worked hard on a cosplay and stepped back and gone "Well I made it. It's not great" - most noteably, when I made effie trinket's purple suit from the first movie. That was a cursed project.

4:10 I don't know if she made this animation but it is so helpful to understand. Seriously, i don't sew and i don't plan on ever sewing but she is just so intelligent and enterteining i keep rewatching her videos. I've learn so much about sewing from these videos! It's insane how she makes it so easy for people to understand by using visuals and explaining. Great work.

I think this still turned out pretty cool!
I was working on a renfair costume design that’s supposed to be “fairy crawls out of a swamp, sees fancy dressed humans, goes “I wanna try that! Looks fun!” and proceeds to put together an outfit of swamp things”
And I have been having a lot of trouble planning the hat, as I have zero experience making those from scratch, but this hat’s foam-and-fabric base looks like it would work really well for what I’m trying to do! And would be about my skill level!
Just probably with a bunch of little plants, and a stump as the center. And a cattail sticking out instead of a feather.
I’m gonna try that out once I’m done with my current sewing project and have some free time again! 😊

  • @moshy2931
    @moshy2931 ปีที่แล้ว

I think if you added moss and fake leaves to the hat it would read better as "soil over your head" and you could add some to the dress/stays to pull the look together a little bit more. Great video as always! I stumbled upon your chanel with your sakizo cosplay and I've been watching all of your videos in a row while crocheting a strawberry bag :)

mushroom hats always make me think of Elsa Beskow, who was a children's book illustrator and writer born in the 1800s and passed away in the mid-1900s. She drew and painted a lot of little mushroom-cap-wearing people! I also think the thing with mushrooms as hats is big among fairy/folk tale illustrators, i e Brian Froud.

  • @siggisigga1

I think I should mention the swedish author Elsa Beskow. She wrote children's books like "The Children of the forest" (1910) and other books with mushroom/flower people in the forest. At least as an scandinavien who grew up reading her books, I automaticly think "Ooh, Elsa Beskow!" when ever I see mushroom faires. I love how you deep dive into things like this, and love your videos! 🤩

Great video! I think the most important part of the sunk cost fallacy is acknowledging that it is a fallacy.
You don’t really lose anything because you did gain progress compared to where you started. In addition, you’re actually saving yourself from further “sunk cost” (more materials used, more time spent) when you step away from a project instead of forcing yourself to finish.

Thank you for being real and showing us that sometimes things just don't work out as intended. My own sunk cost project is the Voidmother from Elder Scrolls online using that goofy light up fabric. I got the fabric to work as a mask, but the rest of the outfit just looks... not great.
Regardless, I love love this idea and want to give it a try, but like, with more horror.

Thanks for sharing this! It's fun to see your process and hear your thoughts even when (part of) the end product isn't what you wanted. I love that you brought up the sunk cost fallacy and how the reality of making means that not everything works the first time, and that's ok. I think it leads to some fun discussion in the comments as well, I love seeing the different approaches folks suggest, whether it's emphasizing things from the context of the game, or mushrooms/cordyceps/bio elements, general design, or some other angle.
