I’d never had an original GBA growing up, had two different SPs, so naturally when Anbernic put out the RG35XXSP, I bought one. And I use it an okay amount, but when they put out this one, I was curious, and I loved the look of it, so I bought one. And almost immediately I fell in love with it, I think I’ve put more time into it than I have the SP one. Heck, I love the form factor so much that I bought an original GBA to go with the GameCube I’m modding.
I had the gba first and frankly I hated my sp, I still used it because of the light, but the sp is just so uncomfortable and small with those microscopic bumpers and they removed the headphone jack.
We now have in 2025 a device that not only has the form factor of a beloved handheld from our childhood but also is powerful enough to play many of the home console games we grew up with as well. All for under $100. What a time to be alive 🤯
I was close to pulling the trigger on this since it's so cheap but my OG Anbernic 35XX shaped like an original Game Boy still works fine. They really pulled on my GBA nostalgia though
I was in a weird place in my life when GBA came out back in the day that I have very little memory or fondness for the system overall as a Nintendo gamer... I did own one but didn't play it nearly enough.
I have the 35sp. I absolutely love it and use it to mostly play ps1 jrpgs. Being able to close the clamshell to pause those games allows me to bring it with me pretty much anywhere and get through those longer games. I even played through Brave Fencer Musashi, so even action games are possible on these Anbernic devices. Very happy with mine.

I still have my grey GBA I got on Christmas of 2002 or 03 maybe. I didn't use it enough to enjoy it because of the lack of light. I put hundreds of hours into my Gameboy SP which I still have but I am glad Anbernic made a GBA with modern tech. I hope this console gets upgraded with new specs down the line so we can enjoy the shape of the GBA for years to come
I just picked up a modded GBA, original form factor. Lithium ion battery, USB-C charging, backlight with *FOURTEEN* brightness levels, a louder speaker and a scratch-resistant glass cover over the screen. All parts aside from the motherboard are brand new.
If you'd like to tap into another dragon-ball related vid or mini-project; I spent a few days getting my modded OLED PS Vita to stream Sparking Zero off my desktop using Sunshine/Moonlight and it has been AWESOME for playing in bed with 0 hand-fatigue. Pretty much only for offline play, but I experienced minimal stutters with some choppy audio. more of a just-because-you-can type of project, but its so cool seeing the capabilities of that little guy in 2025
would be interested to know if the A+B buttons can be replaced with OG ones that are more domed than the ones on here. they look like they have sharper edges than the originals
Repairability of the screen is done through the front. Similar to how the OG GBA works. You’d apply heat to the front to loosen the glue strips, and then pry it off.
This video saved me from spending $200+ on ebay, literally within the next few days. But I know nothing about emulation or how to get the games on an sd card.
It's very easy and there are literally hundreds of tutorials/setup guides for these devices on youtube, you'll figure it out in no time. Retro Game Corps is one of the best channels covering all this stuff.
Recently picked up a GBA clone based off the Funkey S, uses the original shell of the gba so I can put a cartridge into it to make it feel more authentic. Turns on with an actual switch like the OG and has a volume wheel. Pretty cool what they are doing with the V3s chip. Plays all the consoles that the Funkey can. But it doesn't have extra buttons like this. So hotkeys are needed for X and Y. I almost picked this up but have not yet the glacier color is tempting as I have a mint condition oem shell for the GBA that I could compare colors to on video.
Gba is my favorite handheld of all time but I already have two hundred and fifty seven billion ways to play it including real games on real hardware so this thing doesn’t appeal to me
I wanted to never buy an Anbernic device again because the 3 prior devices I owned all defected beyond being useable with very gentle use. I couldn't resist this form factor, I bought it and can attest that it is damn near 1 to 1 in the hand feel with the original GBA. I love that the screen is scaled to the same ratio and that it's larger. I do think that the screen quality is crap but is of course much better than the non backlit original
got the SP for exclusivity game boy advance and then this dropped.. this must be a strategy by them, as soon as you get something you like the exact thing you wanted will come lol
@@FabuBrik I wouldn't play on original native hardware even with the use of GBA flashcarts over the 34XX. 34XX literally retired my modded original backlit ips GBA just like the CubeXX did with my modded original backlit ips GBC with both having flashcarts. The only handheld that still has use case might be native DS/3DS(I have both consoles with DS using flashcart and 3DS on Luma) but is at a stage of being replaced by modern hardware today like the Ayaneo Flip DS(can play 3DS and WiiU games as well). When companies like Anbernic releases a DS clone then original DS hardware is going to become obsolete too. There's less and less attachment to physical media in the current digital age when you can easily store the entire console generations library of games onto a portable external storage medium to take on the go where ever you want and to be put on what ever device you want those games to played be on. The only people that benefits from physical media are niche group of collectors and people trying to make a career out of buying and selling physical media where as the vast majority of people don't care about physical media hence why mom and pop stores for physical media are going out of business.
@@tommy6742 I disagree completely but different strokes for different folks. Native is still objectively better for latency and popping a cart in is part of the whole experience (for some). Of course everyone is different and some will ignore it for convenience of emulation.
I already have a RG35XXSP (silver, so it matches my childhood GBA SP that I still have) so there's really no reason to buy another device like it... But I couldn't help myself and ordered this too, in indigo so it matches my childhood GBA... That I also still have. Yes, it's nostalgia baiting and pandering but I don't really care. I've put more hours into my RG35XXSP than any other gaming device this year. If we get one of these that rips off the PS Vita form factor (The Odin 2 Mini does not. It takes inspiration but doesn't rip it off entirely) and has more powerful hardware so it can emulate up to at least Wii effortlessly, you better bet I'll be there day 1 for that too.
I'd say the Retroid Pocket 5 is pretty close to being a premium PSP-esque emulation device, I'm considering getting one for mainly that purpose. Though devices that can easily emulate PSP, PS2, GameCube, Wii, etc. do cost quite a bit more than $70

Maybe whenever they finally move on from the same chipset they've been using in their XX line and move up to something a bit more powerful capable of emulating most/all of the PSP library.
This is where I'm at with anbernic, after owning four devices. They are not repairable. Anbernic does not offer parts. I dropped my rg35xx plus and the screen didn't crack. It has permanent scan lines now. Pulled the memory cards and threw it in the trash. Ordered a ips screen for my original GBA and a GBA flash cart. Now my GBA plays any game I want. And I can break it on accident and be able to repair it. Shells, screens, buttons, mods all available
About the charge brick: these cheaper devices don't have built-in voltage or current regulation, so you need to use a 5v 1.5A charger. Lower than that and it doesn't charge well, higher and you risk overcharging or damaging the battery. You can get 5v 1.5A chargers for cheap, but still. Something to keep in mind.
They absolutely do have voltage regulators on them, that is a requirement to safely charge a battery. 5v is basically never appropriate for recharging a battery and needs to be converted to something like 4.2v. There are cheap switching regulator chips to do this. Current limiters are more optional but dumb to not include.
I’m just glad they went with the original GBA design and you have the purple one which I had back in the day, rather than the SP design which I don’t love as they made the screen too small and I’ve always loved the design of the original GBA and hopefully this thing has the headphone jack which is another mark against the SP design for me. Looks good though.
They already did the SP design, and gave it a headphone jack. It does have a slightly smaller screen than this new OG GBA design though. The original GBA and SP have the exact same size screen, the difference was the SP screen was frontlit while the OG GBA screen had no light at all. Now the Game Boy Micro, _that thing_ had a small screen.
When I was a late-teen, the _very first thing_ I bought with my _very first check_ was an indigo GBA... and it was stolen by my cousin when I was out of town. Never saw it again. _Reeeally_ tempted right now.
PlayStation Vita, otherwise known as a dedicated PlayStation handheld. It's mainly selling point was being able to play games on the go that were on par with PlayStation 3. Unfortunately, it didn't sell very well, but it has a dedicated fan base that wants a true handheld successor to the console.
I ordered mine a few days ago! I had the original SP as a kid, but I always wanted to try out this form factor. Planning on using this for mostly GBA but also some PS1 rpgs
I'm really loving the RG35XXH and RG35XXSP so much I don't really feel the itch for the GBA model; especially with the screen being compromised for everything but GBA games.
I bought one as soon as it went on sale on Anbernic's site, because the original GBA is my favorite handheld. It's also pretty trippy playing other systems like PS1 on a GBA. I love it.
I kinda want the transparent green, since it reminds me of the Jungle Green N64, but the Glacier one reminds me of my original GBA. It was stolen YEARS ago and I still miss that thing.
I bought an OG Glacier GBA after the SP was out because I always found the form factor way more comfortable. I always wished Nintendo had updated it with a backlit screen and a rechargeable battery. Now this comes out but I already have an RG40XXV… DAMN IT!!!
Great option, but this is why I love that I still have my 3DS. Plays GBA roms Natively through hardware with custom firmware emulates GB and GBC super well too. It's basically all pre switch nintendo handhelds in one device, BUT is still smaller than a switch even if you have the XL.
I dont know. If you are only looking to play GBA games. Games from GB or GBC. There are cheaper options out there. If you want to play PS1 and above games. You really need sticks. If you want to play DS games you really need to get a screen that supports that.
I already have a few emulation systems so I don't need another one. If I feel like playing on a GBA I do have my modded one with a flashcart so this isn't for me. Great for those looking to get into this though.
3:56 Best GBA Castlevania. 7:58 That a rare and expensive game. It doesn't hold up too well though. I actually had issues emulating Shantae at first. My GBA emulator could not run this very well and it runs like molasses. However a normal GBC emulator ran it just fine for some reason. I think the GBA emulator I was using had some issues with late GBC titles like Shantae but it can run the Oracle Zelda games just fine. You like taking apart devices don't you? I don't want to do this unless I have to. I had to do this for a PSP since there was gunk messing up the D-Pad. I had to reopen it a few times because dust got behind the screen and I had to clean it again. I also had the issue of closing the PSP too tightly and messing up some buttons. My controllers are pretty noisy. You can hear them click when I play certain games.
i bought 2 of the RG35XX anbernic handheld for my 2 nieces and they ended up not working for christmas. just only shows a black screen and I tried everything to fix it so I chose to return them.
Took me a little to get used to the little X & Y buttons but now it seems fine for SNES games. I’m playing the PS1 version of Chrono Trigger, yeah I know it’s bad but I want all the extras
My Gameboy advance got stolen back in middle school, so I never really got to play it that much, I had the clear one purple clear forgot the name, but I'll get one for sure and put a lot of advance roms on it...
It looks great if you after a nostalgia fix but i think the SP model they released a few month back is better. All the XX models share the same CPU/GPU so which one you chose comes down to features and form factor, I've got the RG40XX H, it has a 4" display and analogue sticks.

Eversince I got 40XX, I’ve never wanted another one. Anbernic has that XX selling like hot cakes with the many models and while the SP and the 34XX is tempting, I have no nostalgia over it since I never grew up with the original.

sometimes i get the urge to buy these, and load them up with roms for their specific console...like the gameboy one and only load GB roms, etc..but then i know i will never play them
2007-2008 I played gba on my psp, as gba was ending life. Never in my life did I expect to play psp on my gba! 3:2 w/ full screen is special! Hexyz force, initial D, soul caliber :) & Saturn in 3:2 special too, guardian hero’s runs well! (MuOS only/probably) Swap axis L2 is default on MuOS pretty sure, if not do it! (Ppsspp)
It's undoubtedly ancient tech by comparison at this point, but the only one that Anbernic's put out which catches my interest...is the ARC-D. It's literally a Saturn controller, and apparently rocks a Saturn emulator within its arsenal. BUT!! Well, how are you getting your games? If this modded GBA doesn't have an SD slot then you're looking at shoveling out a lot for a flashcart or worse original cartridges.
@SheddysGaming The Ayaneo Flip DS I already know and I would really want it for certain games with that format outside of DS and 3ds emulation but the price though. Although apparently when I was trying to look into discussions about a Linux based budget DS style emulation handheld, the team behind the Revo K101 tried to do a DS clone console but was canceled due to low demand at that time.
Sorry. Right now I'm stuck playing StarWars Dark Forces PS1 on the RG35XXSP. Smoothly plays better than on any RG34XX. The Phantom Menace PS1 also plays smoothly. Family, you are NOT missing out. Feel free to believe my experience.
If this is your 100th handheld device you own, no point putting other system roms. Personal choice, this should be a dedicated GB/GBC and GBA device, no point playong other systems, just because you can, doesn't mean you should. For your first device, go nuts

idk if you'll ever see this but on that rg34xx if you click the power buttion once you can turn dpad in to analog according to a video i watched

Getting a 34XX over a modded GBA is an easy no brainer....I got the indigo and put in another order for glacier color.
I mean, if you want to play cartridges with no lag, then it's not a no brainer, at all. GBA with IPS screen is tops.

Very cool! I have an original GBA, with no backlight! They came out with the backlight 12 months later, and I wasn't going to buy a second one!

I ordered mine a few days ago! I had the original SP as a kid, but I always wanted to try out this form factor. Planning on using this for mostly GBA but also some PS1 rpgs
I'm really loving the RG35XXH and RG35XXSP so much I don't really feel the itch for the GBA model; especially with the screen being compromised for everything but GBA games.
I need this. I've been interested in these retro emulation handhelds for awhile, but never bought one because they didn't look like the GBA
I bought one as soon as it went on sale on Anbernic's site, because the original GBA is my favorite handheld.
It's also pretty trippy playing other systems like PS1 on a GBA. I love it.
I kinda want the transparent green, since it reminds me of the Jungle Green N64, but the Glacier one reminds me of my original GBA. It was stolen YEARS ago and I still miss that thing.
I bought an OG Glacier GBA after the SP was out because I always found the form factor way more comfortable. I always wished Nintendo had updated it with a backlit screen and a rechargeable battery. Now this comes out but I already have an RG40XXV… DAMN IT!!!
Great option, but this is why I love that I still have my 3DS. Plays GBA roms Natively through hardware with custom firmware emulates GB and GBC super well too. It's basically all pre switch nintendo handhelds in one device, BUT is still smaller than a switch even if you have the XL.
I dont know. If you are only looking to play GBA games. Games from GB or GBC. There are cheaper options out there. If you want to play PS1 and above games. You really need sticks. If you want to play DS games you really need to get a screen that supports that.
I already have a few emulation systems so I don't need another one. If I feel like playing on a GBA I do have my modded one with a flashcart so this isn't for me. Great for those looking to get into this though.
Honestly if they made it in transparent indigo like my original GBA I had (and still have incidentally), I'd have bought it in a heartbeat.

7:58 That a rare and expensive game. It doesn't hold up too well though. I actually had issues emulating Shantae at first. My GBA emulator could not run this very well and it runs like molasses. However a normal GBC emulator ran it just fine for some reason. I think the GBA emulator I was using had some issues with late GBC titles like Shantae but it can run the Oracle Zelda games just fine.
You like taking apart devices don't you? I don't want to do this unless I have to. I had to do this for a PSP since there was gunk messing up the D-Pad. I had to reopen it a few times because dust got behind the screen and I had to clean it again. I also had the issue of closing the PSP too tightly and messing up some buttons.
My controllers are pretty noisy. You can hear them click when I play certain games.
This is the Emulation handheld that I have been holding out for, I will be buying 3 of these. 1 for me and each of my kids
i bought 2 of the RG35XX anbernic handheld for my 2 nieces and they ended up not working for christmas. just only shows a black screen and I tried everything to fix it so I chose to return them.

My Gameboy advance got stolen back in middle school, so I never really got to play it that much, I had the clear one purple clear forgot the name, but I'll get one for sure and put a lot of advance roms on it...
It looks great if you after a nostalgia fix but i think the SP model they released a few month back is better. All the XX models share the same CPU/GPU so which one you chose comes down to features and form factor, I've got the RG40XX H, it has a 4" display and analogue sticks.
Can someone in the comments tell me is there something that can play gameboy advance games and ds games?? I got cartridges and dont want to buy something with stupid drift.
I'm also sure that 8-bit consoles would be good on this, NES, SMS and PC Engine etc.

My emulation device is a DS lite. Got a DS cart and GBA cart. Basically can play anything i want.
And GBA wise you aren't even emulating. It's still real hardware, which is nice
Eversince I got 40XX, I’ve never wanted another one. Anbernic has that XX selling like hot cakes with the many models and while the SP and the 34XX is tempting, I have no nostalgia over it since I never grew up with the original.

How does one go about setting one of these up? I am interested in getting this, but I dont know jack about setting up the emulation for different systems. And where to get the game. Any info would be greatly appreciated!
sometimes i get the urge to buy these, and load them up with roms for their specific console...like the gameboy one and only load GB roms, etc..but then i know i will never play them
Could you run something like Syncthing or Resilio on those devices, to automatically keep your saves in sync with your main platform?

2007-2008 I played gba on my psp, as gba was ending life. Never in my life did I expect to play psp on my gba! 3:2 w/ full screen is special! Hexyz force, initial D, soul caliber :) & Saturn in 3:2 special too, guardian hero’s runs well! (MuOS only/probably)
Swap axis L2 is default on MuOS pretty sure, if not do it! (Ppsspp)

It's undoubtedly ancient tech by comparison at this point, but the only one that Anbernic's put out which catches my interest...is the ARC-D. It's literally a Saturn controller, and apparently rocks a Saturn emulator within its arsenal. BUT!! This mofo is rather extremely tempting...yesss.

Ape Escape is the only PS1 game that requires the analog sticks, every other game is playable with the D-pad

Well, how are you getting your games? If this modded GBA doesn't have an SD slot then you're looking at shoveling out a lot for a flashcart or worse original cartridges.

@SheddysGaming The Ayaneo Flip DS I already know and I would really want it for certain games with that format outside of DS and 3ds emulation but the price though. Although apparently when I was trying to look into discussions about a Linux based budget DS style emulation handheld, the team behind the Revo K101 tried to do a DS clone console but was canceled due to low demand at that time.

Sorry. Right now I'm stuck playing StarWars Dark Forces PS1 on the RG35XXSP. Smoothly plays better than on any RG34XX. The Phantom Menace PS1 also plays smoothly. Family, you are NOT missing out. Feel free to believe my experience.

If this is your 100th handheld device you own, no point putting other system roms. Personal choice, this should be a dedicated GB/GBC and GBA device, no point playong other systems, just because you can, doesn't mean you should. For your first device, go nuts
