  • In this video I get started on doing body work on my truck. I've had this truck for 6 + years and I love it. The bodywork is not the greatest but im not a body man. I hope you enjoy.

    Make sure to weld the brace to the patch panel and also around the crimp on where you bent it over weld it. I always cut the new braces just where it is needed. But that new patch panel has to be welded to the new brace at the bottom. of fender.

    Back about 40 years ago I had a 66 gmc that the back half of the front fender was rust free and the front half had a big dent from the bumper slapping it. I cut a fender front half off at the junkyard and welded the 2 halves together.

    I’d grind off that inside lip that you crimped into it. It has served its purpose to help you get the patch panel flush, and now that you’re welded up you don’t need it. it’ll only trap contaminants and will end up corroding through. Even if you spray it with undercoating there’s still a good chance of that. Corrosion loves tiny little creases where coating doesnt reach. Looking very cool regardless. Cool truck.

    Good work Isaac, was surprised you had a flange tool in the stash.
    Makes the panel stronger after welding compared to a butt-joint, did body work for many years and used to lay down lead instead for bondo after welding, but those days are gone now.
    For the inside, grind the rust away, a thick good coat of primer (not a spray-can) Rust-Oleum works great.
    And seam-sealer afterwards on the patch panel welds, then rust-protection and you are done !
    Cheers from Texas. * * *

      @cliffpalermo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Big fan of the Rust-Oleum as well. When used as directed it is rock solid

      @@cliffpalermo Yes, I did a test 11 years ago, painted my old Craftsman riding lawnmower 10-36 with grey Rust-Oleum primer first (paint-gun) and 2 coats of grey spray-paint after primer was dry & wet-sanded using # 280 grit.. Still now all looks great and this machine most of the time sit outside in all kinds of weather.

    I have a 1962 C-10 that I have had since new. They have a certain propensity for rust. Improper drainage of that bracket is a big culprit. Good luck it's lookin' good so far.

    Looking good! I was a store manager for an O’Reilly paint store for a year. Don’t buy cheap body filler. Buy 3M or Rage extreme. O’Reilly paint stores have a paint camera. Bring the truck (or fender) in and they can place it on the truck (or fender) and scan the paint. Once you scan the paint it will generate a formula for the paint and they can mix it in any type of paint you want (single stage, epoxy, base coat/clear coat, etc.) some stores can even load rattle cans (typically DuPont stores) with your custom paint as well.

    Issac you did a great job on the panel, but to finish it off you should use something like metal to metal or all metal. It doesn't absorb water like bondo will. Makes a Long lasting repair. Ps. I really enjoy watching your videos and cars and camera.

    Lines up nice and looks alright! Makes me feel better about doing my own work on my rust-bucket Beetle someday.
    I can't do worse than prior owners that welded patch-panels over the top of rusted-out spots! (although that did keep it out of the scrapyard and on the road long enough to come into my possession, so it's not all bad)
    I'd recommend testing the black paint on the new parts with some brake-cleaner, it's usually pretty weak stuff as far as adhesion goes and may be better cleaned off before painting.

  • @NTromb
    @NTromb 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Absolutely phenomenal I’m sure you know this I’ve never done it myself but I’ve watched many body men/women do this. Tack weld weld a bit then go to the other side of the panel Wild a little bit to let it cool down don’t concentrate the heat all in one area I mean the videos already out but still for next time

  • @jaratt85
    @jaratt85 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You guys need to build 3 V8 bar stools and race them in the shop there on that property. Always strip the e-coat off of any panel you get. It's not a primer it's just plastic that's baked onto the part to protect from corrosion while shipping it. It doesn't stick very well and paint will soften it up and pull it right off.
