Strategy theory for American style using National Mah Jongg League rules is very different from all other versions because of the categories and components of valid hands published by the league. Ive only been playing a few months. My first strategy is if there arent any pairs or close consecutive numbers in a suit i then tend to either keep even or odd depending on how many I have of each.

Why is one tile always sideways in an exposure here?

Why don’t you keep the tiles in order to make it easier to follow? Dots in between cracks not in number order. Otherwise great learnings.

I have seen people arrange their tiles by type in three ways:
1. Jokers, flowers, winds, dragons, then number tiles in numerical order regardless of suit; this can show potential for like numbers and may show which category would use most of the tiles, but it’s difficult to see a predominant suit.
2. Jokers, flowers, then by category; this can show which category uses the most tiles. Since some tiles are used in multiple categories, it takes a lot of effort to rearrange them.
3. Jokers, flowers, winds, dragons, then each suit in numerical order (sometimes with the corresponding dragon); this can show the predominant suit and predominant patterns within the suits. In my opinion, this is the best initial arrangement because of the original design of the game.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder so any arrangement can be used as long as the player can quickly identify the strength of the hand. The strength of a hand will be based on multiples with supporting tiles or the predominant pattern. Once the strength of the hand is identified, the tiles are rearranged.
