Haha! During the part of the video of painting the trees I thought to myself "What..such ease... I should leave a comment requesting him to do a tutorial on his tree painting techniques". And a few mins later there is a full self criticism of the style of painting trees not being perfect. Epic Matt. You should give yourself more credit. It was a brilliant piece.
Typical from artists... never think their own work is good.. while those of us that have trouble even conceiving doing this think it is great.... see it ALL the time on TH-cam... hazard of the ability I guess.
@@pesto12601 I heard somewhere: "Experience is just a synonym for all of our mistakes..." and i feel like that is the core of ever present anxiety in artists
@@lazicveljko3713 You could be right... perhaps artists and those with born skill just dont' have the ability to understand how lucky their talent is and always think their work is not good. Crazy really...
Thanks for this video. In this case speeding up the process helps understanding your choices of color and the way you shape elements: leaves, roofs, bark... And I must say it is impressive, the lines are invisible on screen so it looks like magic.
Would you consider a video talking about how you illustrate & paint trees and foliage? You always have such depth and detail in the way you do it, and I'd love to hear and see a bit more about how you approach the process!
Beautiful work and great to see it all come together. Knowing where to start and which steps to follow would be a challenge for me, but here it can be seen how you start with background first and gradually expand to include foreground shapes and then final details. Excellent demo.
I absolutely love this limited palette and the piece you created from it. The use of fewer colours really makes a difference. Also, when it comes to travel palettes, I find I mix less when out and about. So for me it is more important to have colours that work well together rather than an infinite number of mixes available.
I really like how you approached this illustration even with limited palette. It’s a very interesting color combination. I usually see hanza yellow or medium yellow and ultramarine blue as part of limited palette. Thanks for sharing this 👍
Yes, usually I would use ultramarine and different yellow/earth tone combination but here I just put in the best stuff I could find in my spare pans :)
you draw very precise details with the brush in different colours, such a tiny space without messing up with others, it shows your excellent command of your tools, i admire you a lot
I've built a bunch of micro palettes just like this (I'm currently at my fourth or fifth) and here's what I've learned: 1) wall tack works super good for keeping the pans stuck and it's the least hassle to remove when you want to switch out colors. 2) this may vary from brand to brand but tube watercolors, even when squeezed into pans and let dry, seem to be more pigmented and melt up easier than actual pan watercolors. My guess is they're just not as dried up as pans. They're easier to refill as a tube can fill a half pan anywhere from 3-4 or more times and you don't have to remove the pan from the palette. Also, this is super brand specific as tubes come in different sizes, but I found this cheaper in the long run and easier to use because of the pigmentation. I also found significant batch differences in certain pigments so this keeps the color the same for at least as long as a tube lasts. 3) pill boxes from ebay that already have compartments work wonderfully with tube colors and there's more size and shape variation without the pan size and shape hindering.
Yeah I’m going to try the wall tack in Kana’s next palette it’s just I had the pans and box this time so I decided to use what I already had. Thanks for the tips!
HAHAHA! You have to be kidding me, I literally just made a minimal 7 color palette with the roughly same colors last night! I added Raw Umber and am using Payne's Grey Blueish instead of Delft Blue. I am not original though, I got the palette idea from Jose Naranja, a Spanish notebook artist. Turquoise is fantastic and I'm looking forward to keeping more color harmony going forward as /i start experimenting with this set.
So an update on this: I used the set for a few days and immediately discovered a problem...I can't easily make clean warm greys! I looked at the pigment information and I think I figured it out. I wanted to experiment with Windsor and Newton paints and the Paynes Grey they produce is a dark dark blue, but it is a cold blue! I decided to change it out for PB60...I would have gone with Delft Blue but I find the Schminke one blooms quite a bit so I went with Daniel Smith Indanthrone. It is a very warm, red-leaning version of this pigment. I also switched the PR101 pigment for a PBr7. I went from two cool blues to a warm and a cool blue! In the end, here's my palette: W&N Raw Sienna (Quinacridone Gold is a good replacement) W&N Cobalt Turquoise W&N Windsor Red W&N Brown Ocher (want to try the English Venitian Red you are using though) Daniel Smith Indanthrone Daniel Smith Undersea Green (just this week, will probably switch back to Rich Green Gold) Daniel Smith Raw Umber To be honest, I don't really need the Raw Umber, but it makes mixing a brick red or dark black/blue easier. This set I made in a very tiny kit, 60mm x 30mm x 11mm but it is enough paints that I can use them directly from the palette to add color to doodles at work. It just lives in my pen case now!
Wow, it's so nice to see someone paint actual art instead of cartoon faces. Bravo. Because you took the time to create actual art instead of adolescent mermaids you've earned a subscribe, like and share. Good job.
Ι ve done the same but I used a bit of blue tack to fix the pans in the small box. It really holds well, and in this way you can easily interchange them.
I wish I had thought of using tape before! I was making my own palette yesterday by hot gluing those same magnets to my half-pans... Works for the most part but sometimes the magnets will still tear off. I'll keep it in mind for next time I need to fix my palette again :) Your painting came out beautiful as always, too. Your works are a huge inspiration to me and I hope that someday I can nail scenery like you do!
This is by far one of my favorite paintings of yours 😍😍! You did such a great job and now I'm thinking of buying a Starbucks mint box. Please keep up the fantastic artwork & videos they are enjoyable and informative!
Beautiful painting :) I also have some tins to fill with paints. One is from paperclips set, second from cosmetic stuff. You made me realize that I need to buy white paint to spray inside :))
I love this a lot. I can not believe you got those colours out of that selection of a limited pallet. So beautiful. Makes me want ro use a similar one.
Mateusz, przepiękne kolory i detale! Czy masz dodatkowe video jak mieszkałeś te kolory? Pozdrowienia z Chicago! Puszka po Altoids mints tez jest dobra na mała paletkę!
I'm impressed by your watercolor technique is every time I see it. When I use digital too much my process becomes very unfocused and indecisive compared to what you're able to do - and a good artist *should* learn to think many steps ahead, instead of trusting that they can figure everything out as they go.
WOWOW this is amazing! I wish you could made a video thats like 1 hour long or something, showing the process of making the painting like what techniques and stuff, but if thats too busy for you then I understand!
If you want to use super glue on plastic, sanding the bottom and making the plastic rough gives it some tooth for the glue to hold onto. Once the glue dries it should stick and be adhered to the plastic!
Amazing I love ur watercolors paintings, I'd like to try some for a while. What do you think should I buy something expensive or maybe a cheap set and is it better to mix colors or buy bigger palette of colors?
Buy just a few high-quality paints. Lots of paint options actually just hurt you as a beginner, as you need to learn color mixing, temperature, and tones. Schminke makes great 12 color sets but can be expensive. I'm a big fan of the White Nights paints from Russia. They can be a bit opaque though.
What Rich S. Said. You should buy less good quality paints and then build up on that when you feel like “I need this or that color”. Just 6 basic colors should be ok for starting.
I really enjoy your « diy » palettes videos! To fix your pans you can also use a magnetic tape (don’t know if it’s the good name in english...) obviously, the painting is amazing as alsways!
I thought about using it but went for the stronger magnets in the end, thanks! Actually Holbein watercolor pans have magnetic tape on the back when you buy them!
If someone try to make small watercolor box, you don't have use magnet. Just use blu tack( or thumb tack) and buy smart phone hanger thingy and put it on rear of casing for outdoor usage!
