I'm constantly yelling out measures numbers in the background. So nerve-wracking for me to watch now! And then, I have to completely cut off and give notes to the orchestra. Julia is so calm!
i was suprised alexander sang his part with molokov up the octave. sounded very nice. although for his last line, i don't see that point in jumping the octave in mid sentence
@B8ers10 In the original concept album The American was played by a British guy and The Russia was Swedish, this way you hopefully get the best performance possible. not to mention, Josh Groban is clearly American and doesn't even attempt a Russian accent either.
Is there any sort of recording or DVD of this concert? I just got into "Chess" thanks to the Royal Albert Hall concert, and stumbled onto this looking for behind the scenes stuff for that. This cast sounds amazing, and I kind of wish Raul Esparza and Norm Lewis had been at the 2008 concert!
The original London version in 1986 had the "35 years on" part. They had a slightly different version the Chess in Concert (2008). The London production was set in present day (circa 1985). The Chess in Concert was set in 1979/1980. Remember Florence was only 5 when the Soviets invaded in 1956. So with an earlier timeline, it makes sense with 25 years on.
@B8ers10 I suppose that's true, but I thought Raul Esparza did a great job, I found Marti Pellows a bit raspy. I think it's pretty clear Josh Groban isn't an actor, but I did like his singing, y'know, divorced from the acting a bit. Oh right, that sounds interesting. I do think it's more um, involving when the actors have the proper accents, but I don't think any version so far has followed it to the letter (But correct me if I'm wrong)
@Pandammonia Yeah, but that's the thing, it was a concept album. looking back, maybe i was a bit over angry :P but i still think the arbiter cannot be american - the whole point is he's impartial so unless they can do a great swiss accent, english would be the easiest :P and i'm a groban fan but think he slaughters Anatoly. I don't know if you saw the tour recently? Guy playing anatoly was a guy called Daniel Koek, stunning voice, but they got accent coaches, made the difference
is there a video ANYWHERE of this song in the benefit concert? someone posted pretty much the whole concert on google video, but this song is left out :(
I think the lyrics here are: Who'd ever guess that no one makes the moves intended till the game has ended then they say I told you so. And I think in the RAH 2008 concert the lyrics are: Who'd ever think it no one makes the moves intended till the game has ended then they say i told you so. I'm not 100% but I'm pretty sure these are close to correct. Nope it helps.
Sutton was good in this, you can see a little fear in her when communist is talking to her and theatening her. Also, you can see that there is a part of her that would like her husband back.
ewww fail on mant parts! The arbeiter missed so many words! Stay with the actual script!!! and they changes parts of the music. Keep it as the musical was written! The only good thing was groban and Pascal except he should not be playing Walter
The fact that there is no CD recording of this is essentially criminal.

anyone else feel Raúl needs to sing 'Nobody's Side" at Miscast?? nope??
just me whose life would be made complete by that then....:D
NORM
Norm Lewis should be in everything.

5:49 it’s supposed to be 25 years on, and finds HER confidence gone

In one of the performances Idina Menzel flubbed and sang “35 years” instead.
Jonathan Dokuchitz. He's amazing.

i LOVE julia's facial expressions from 4:40 to about 5:00

u can get the full swedish cast singing in english on cd its very rare! but i have it try internet!
was this before RAH? i'm a little new to this whole musical, but i own chess in concert...
is there a video ANYWHERE of this song in the benefit concert? someone posted pretty much the whole concert on google video, but this song is left out :(
@B8ers10 It's a benefit concert, not a proper production, so I don't see why it matter so much.
I agree this is an amazing cast...was this release on a DVD?
Please god someone find me the full performance!
I think the lyrics here are:
Who'd ever guess that no one makes the moves intended till the game has ended then they say I told you so.

They sing a variation of both in both versions. I think this one eliminates the bottom verse you are referring to. But the top one is in both

@Nandika92 i agree! i repeated that part in the RAH version over and over again
I didn't get why did Walter sing the "communists, democrats" part?
Because in this version it wouldn’t have made sense for Freddie to sing it since he’s the opponent/playing against Anatoly in Endgame.
I adore Sutton but she isn't as good as Kerry Ellis
Idina wasn't that bad...it just Julia is 200% better. Both Kerry and Sutton is just are amazing as the wife.
What version of the show is this from?
Julia. :-)
its murney not merney!
sorry, I *hope* that helps lol.
dancing? :)
