Raul Esparza needs to do an album with Barry manilow arrangements. He is as good as the divine miss m ( not to be confused with Bette midler) and early Streisand. Manilow could really showcase his talent.

I saw this live and you are completely right. The actors were drown out. I thought after the first show the sound would have been corrected but it wasn’t.

I assume you're talking specifically about the Original Broadway Cast Recording (which removed half of the original songs from the show and added many others), because all the other cast recordings (Original London 1986, Danish Cast 2001, Actor's Fund Concert 2003, In Concert 2008...) have this song, if not completely identical versions of it. There are many, many, MANY versions of Chess, and it is indeed confusing. The original Broadway version differed heavily in plot, characterisation, ending and song selection from the original.
Charles Metcalf you do know that both Raúl Esparza and Karen Olivo had throat infections during this performance right? It's not gonna be their best performance.

It's interesting how Raul is clearly doing very different acting choices in these two performances.
I think a lot of it had to do with how bad he was feeling. His acting reflected that.
When his voice was getting worse, he leaned into his acting more!
