Poor Nate, and all the other innocent children in that family! I was raised in a fundamentalist Southern Baptist family too. I hated Fred Phelps and all he did and stood for. He was so reminiscent, to me, of my tyrannical, hyper-religious grandmother and father. Violence, restrictive living, insular life style, denigrating women.... the whole schmear sounds so scarily familiar..... argh.
I'm so glad Nate's clear now and free. Here's to his new life and recovery!!! I'm free too!! Yay!
PS .... Nate's story is so fascinating...I left on my 18th birthday too... to the minute! And, hid my belongings... got my own transportation... and left. Nate is only three years younger than I. I have PTSD also, from my first family life, and I know how to control my triggers. I'm still growing.

Wow, what an inspiring story! It's amazing that Nate was able to overcome the intense childhood indoctrination he went through. It gives me hope.

Not all Christians use the Bible to hate or tell people they are going to hell. The most important thing to do as a Christian is to love, to love God and to love others. I am a Christian, I am part of the LGBTQ+ community, and I know science is real. I appreciate seeing the atheist/ gnostic perspective. And it’s awesome that Nate is sharing his personal story. Everyone deserves to think for themselves and decide what they believe in. It seems like this organization helps a lot of people who have been harmfully affected by religion. It’s sad that people use the Bible for hate, but I’m glad you are counteracting that with love.

As I get older, I’m questioning everything that I was taught. My dad was an abusive pastor. My husband used to be a pastor. My questioning is scary to me to the point that I never talk about it. I need help with this level of my life. I’m so glad to find your channel 🙏❤️🙏

I just want to encourage you with this thought. Questioning is how you be the most genuine version of yourself. Jordan Peterson always says “tell the truth to the best degree you understand it”.
I also encourage you to check out Jordan Peterson’s biblical series where he evaluates the psychological impact and intent of the genesis stories. Very fascinating for everyone of any religion.
Have a good day and remember it’s okay to trust yourself enough to question things around you

I feel for Nate's experience. It is never painless to extricate yourself from family. I was working on a state project for Kansas and spent time in Topeka. Once with my then girlfriend riding passenger, we passed these folks picketing along the side of the road. In a sudden impulse she mooned them as we went by. On the way back I felt it only fair to let her drive and repeat the salutation.

WBC came and protested at my private Christian university. We were too liberal; we let LGBTQ people on campus and let them date who they wanted. A large portion of the student body still had significant prejudices and implicit biases, of course, but we let them exist with a lesser amount of judgement than other places and that was TERRIBLE.

When I think about these types of churches and those who go to listen to hate filled and extremely sickening sermons, I just love the massacre scene from the first Kingsman movie.

Religion wants you to fear the world and mankind and satan, etc., yet the thing we need to be most cautious and fearful of is religion itself. Fred Phelps is a dead example of why this is so.

Was the church college Fred Phelps attended in Pasadena happen to be the Worldwide Church of God? They were an abusive fundamentalist group and I could see him being a member. The church also disfellowshipped members who didn't 100% submit to their teachings, so I could see Fred getting kicked out. Nathan didn't say who this group was, so I was hoping he could answer this.

Most of the Phelps's seem to be articulate intelligent folk, they just got infected with this terrible hate bug. Louis Theroux visiting them showed this weird schism in their minds. Kudos to Nathan and his nieces that got out of this hateful cult. The WBC should serve as a reminder what brainwashing, in this case by religion, can lead to..

Christian theocracy arose because (i) the Roman civil service passed many of its functions to the nascent church in the 5th and 6th centuries CE and (ii) the Roman economy and monetary system collapsed in the 7th century with the consequence that the distribution of land became the most bankable commodity and was almost exclusively in the hands of the church.

It would be super helpful if the hosts had allowed Mr. Phelps to speak freely especially when recounting a horrifying act of child abuse. When you inject nonsensical comments, you are demeaning what this man has to say. Abruptly stopping him in the middle of his retelling of a very traumatic event in his childhood most definitely could have been edited way better. Anyway, I am glad that Mr. Nate Phelps moved on and out of such a horrific environment.
