Contraceptives are designed to prevent pregnancy in three basic ways: they either block sperm, disable sperm before they reach the uterus, or suppress ovulation. But is one strategy better than the other? And how does each one work? NWHunter describes the mechanics behind different kinds of contraceptives.
Lesson by NWHunter, animation by Draško Ivezić.
This video seems more comfortable than some old guy putting a condom over a banana. Schools should start using this video to teach.
Ah, but then who would tell kids that sex is evil, your a bad person for doing it, and that your testicles will dissolve into an alternate dimension of testicle-eating dogs?
Nobody. That's who.
Dumbass.
I think you are exaggerating just a little bit but TBH it's quite shitty of them to implant these ideas that have no basis except BS reasons they use to justify it to themselves
+cooldude56g I wasn't taught that it was evil, that sounds more like something only religious schools would teach.
+Rowan Brown, since when do religions think sex is evil?? i dont know specifically about other religions but as a christian, we get taught that sex is a wonderful gift from God but only diff is that we are taught to have sex with the one we married. we have a whole book based on love and sex, so just thought to let you know. anyway , there is a lot of pros to not sleep around. anywa i really like this vid and they should use more formats like these in sex education.
+Bekz Free Will
What are all the pros of "not sleeping around"?
I've been on the pill for 4 and a half years now and it's worked well for me. I've had a couple of scares where my period was 3 days late but my pregnancy tests turned out negative each time (2 times) I know to take them every day and am always on top of them. Such a medical miracle
What is the brand pill you take and when do you take it? Before or after having s**??
Does it cause you to gain weight?
@@emelycalva8514you've probably found the answer by now but.. birth control pills should be taken at the same time everyday, doesnt matter if it's before or after seggs!
Super helpful! Us in most S.Asian countries are never taught about these and many people fall in trouble. Thank you for educating!
How do contraceptives work?
step one: wear crocs
lol
step 2?
CalvinWinz_YT vote trump
i love crocs
@Susan Ananda You dont get it, its a joke
Male contraceptives would be awesome.
Lol that's called cutting your nuts off
Or just get a vasectomy lol
*your wish has been granted*
Female contraceptives give more cramps to women and male contraceptives will make man, feminine... 😶
A guy killed him self after trying a male contraceptive pill
One of the side effects is depression
How the hell do you use a condom incorrectly? Do you eat it?
one example would be breaking it
sometimes you loose your chewing gym😆
leave them in their wallets where they get worn down and more likely to break. wrong size. double bagging them which causes friction on the rubber and makes it easy to break.
Sometimes people put them on incorrectly, the Vagina might pull the condom off a bit, if the guy is the bottom sperm might get out and reach the vulva or the use two condoms on top of one another, or a male and female condom together. The friction between the two will break them both
Put it on a banana
Those sperm just seem so distraught
especially the one at 1:45
i know, i wish i could just drink it
I've been on the depo shot for the past 3 years and honestly its a life saver. I never get cramping or that time of the month anymore. The downside of taking it is possibly having blood clots.
it’s also know to cause early onset osteoporosis😬
thank you sooooo much for this !
this is the shit we should have learned at school
3:20 Of course it ALWAYS affects women
sadly
it seems that you heard it wrong, they exclusively affect women and not men, but they don't always affects them since these side effects don't always happen
@@joaomarcelo0031 it still sucks
All because of 3rd wave of feminism
I love Science! This is amazing, I now have a deeper insight about contraceptives
Sadly hormonal BC side effects can get pretty severe for a lot of women. BC pill made my moods so unstable I had to stop, felt like I was literally taking crazy pills. Barrier methods only for me... And no pregnancy scares in 12 years of using condoms only.
I had such bad nausea when I was taking them. I couldn't do normal things basically
Why am I watching this, I'm a virgin
Helpful knowledge for the future?
You probably want to know what kind of options you have at your disposal
The more you know
#KnowledgeIsPower
ehh....this is unnecessary..we are educated about this in school
where did you go to school?
I love these graphics! (:
They could be worse, and more detailed XD
That moment you are watching this video with your window open and suddenly a man decides to work beside your window.
Last time I came this early the contraceptive didn't work.
dab on them contraceptives
I wish my teacher could explain this when I was in High scholl
OMG!! I love this channel! I finally found an amazing explanation and easy learning content
I still don't get why a contraceptive pill for men isn't out yet. I'd sign up for that in no time!
Well, I imagine entirely shutting down whole organs that actively produce cells might have some detrimental effects to the rest of your body.
Disabling sperm or completely stopping production is different, for one no spunk when doing it and secondly as said previously the side effect could be massive at the moment. But hey no sperm is a win win for younger couples, just get "ready" again and go all night long. :)
Just like simulating pregnancy is for women, if you may allow this comment, oh Stannis, the One True King of Westeros
Dutch Oven Well, I think a lot of the fluid is produced in the prostate, so there would be at least some fluid.
+Stannis Baratheon True... only the sperm it said, nothing about the semen... Fk.
Note that IUDs do not necessarily prevent fertilization. They prevent implantation of the fertilized ovum in the uterine wall.
TED-ed! Let's face it, that was your most unattractive animation of all time but it contained very useful knowledge and it was very simple to grasp.
So, as always thanks for making informative videos and hope to see those very beautifully animated videos of you again!
I liked the animation
What!? You want fancy animation with reproductive organs too?
This 4 min video sums up an entire chapter of my bio book ;)
This taught me more than school.
I swear the sound effects are too cute
Thank You for your information. Now it will help me in anthropology answer writing. Thank you very much.
Being buy ellaone for years and never really knew how it works...Thanks Ted-Ed
hey i was wondering how that works, good thing i'm subscribed to the channel and got this in my recommended!
abstaining is very effective too. the only side effect is not having sex.... and occasional testicle explosion.
and im going to preemptively say this is a joke dont get offended yes i get you may or may not have sex and somehow mentioning abstaining upsets you for some bloodly reason
Abstaining is a good way of not having babies.
Rape is the exception.
Still don't abort babies.
Or just get a fucking Vasectomy or your Ovaries cut, simple as that. Abstaining is just a depressing and unrealistic choice. Don't mean to sound harsh, btw I found your joke Certified Comedy Gold.
Abstinence is not contraception....
Have you not heard of Masturbation?
So according to probability, even if you use the items correctly, the person is still going to get an sti/pregnant eventually due to a random chance of it not working.
Yep! That's correct! There's always a chance of STIs/pregnancy - just like the common cold. You can do all the "right" things to keep yourself from getting a cold (taking vitamins, getting enough sleep, exercising, washing your hands) but you still might get a cold.
That's also why combining multiple methods is a good choice.
Don't be paranoiac.
I'm not being paranoid, just stating a logical conclusion with mathematical concepts.
@@natashavermilyea7964 but remember there is a thing called coincidence. And she’s not always friendly. 😉
Definitely could have used this vid in health class
Interestingly this is more advance than what I learn in school
No mention of vasectomy?
Or tubal ligation? hysterectomy works, which is fine for pets, though not performed on humans regularly just for the intention of birth control.
I think the issue with vasectomy is that it's generally considered permanent.
I'm pretty sure some people want to actually have babies in the future but yeah I think they should have mentioned those though.
Vasectomy is not permanent nor is a castration. It can be undone.
True - though it still isn't usually categorized under contraception.
quite disappointed the implant wasn't mentioned as it is one of the best methods for contraception
This video was really just made for men because we dont know whats going on down there
@@FuruHataNinzaburo-w8z I'm a girl and I'm learning
Lol its ur personal issue.. Why u r blaming whole male race.. Gentleman knows it..
Wow this is really useful. Great video
found it helpful fir my pharmacology
I am on contraceptive implant for 2yrs now and I will say that it saved my life from being pregnant especially on this pandemic when you're stuck with a partner 😂
Sameee
You guys should do a video on Natural Family Planning
YES
Saddest romance ever~

Still better then twilight

that was more informative than sex ed
My teacher sended me the link to watch this..
Same lol
same
@Chloe O'Neill same LOL
Pulling out should've been worth a mention.
except not because it doesn't work well enough to be considered a contraceptive
Women can still be impregnated with precum if I'm not mistaken.
So pulling out just lessens the amount sperm that gets into the vagina.
It wouldn't be consider as a contraceptive.
"pulling out" is an action, not necessarily a "contraceptive method".
My mother knew a friend who ended up getting pregnant due to the pull out method. Remilia is right, you can get pregnant with precum.
Pulling out technically is a method - a physical contraceptive like the rhythm method - and it's called coitus interruptus.
I just watched a auto tune dog and now this wow TH-cam recommendations are getting good 😂😂😂
An informative topic. However, the options should be more physical than chemical since chemicals might alter some functions permanently.
wow..i njoyed a lot..tank u..very interestingly demonstrated
This video should serve as a reminder to any man, how easy they currently have it when it comes to contraceptives. Wear a fkn rubber it won’t affect you’re hormones and general mental state and don’t cause you any pain
As a guy, I’m scared of intimacy but if I do hsve it one day, I will always make sure I am careful
This is very helpful and powerful. Birth control is very important
Sperms have smiley faces!! Lol😂 Very informative tho👍🏽
best explanation thanks
Why am I here, I have my assignment to go and finish
I waited a whole video for the side effects and they were portraied as so casual that it is as if the author didn't want to go into the horrific details...
Maybe not everyone has side effects but they definitely could've gone into more detail
2:50 "98% means. Out of 100, 2 would be up the duff."
So this is from 4 years ago so there's probably no point replying to this
But, well, this is incorrect. The probability of getting a six in one throw is 1/6 BUT the probability of getting one six from 6 throws is around 66.5%
And what the vo said about the 98% is correct as well.
@@what._.2285 I am still here. You've calculated the probability for at least one 6 in 6 throws. I said exactly one six in all of 6 throws. Gotta recheck if mine was correct or not
If it has small hole or it wear out
Why is this even in my feed. I don't even get sex
I think the male pill is a brilliant idea. It would give men more control, I know they can use condoms but once you're in a steady relationship that's exclusive and the woman is on the pill, most people stop using condoms. Not to offend my own gender but a lot of women do baby trap men and/or lie about contraception....or are on pill but may not take it correctly or be more careful when they're sick etc.
I agree - it is a good idea.
It is just that it is difficult to get one work since it would mess with testosterone production and that has bad side effects.
Yeah because ladies don't have to worry about that kind of thing at all... As the video mentions most of these methods only negatively affect women and we deal with it anyway. If people want to increase the effectiveness of contraception men need to be willing to take a hit too.
skel47958 obviously I would only agree with it if scientists had done thorough tests and knew all the potential side effects.
Vasectomy and tubal ligation are also a form of surgical contraception just they are doing permanent alteration to the human body.
I'm glad ted ed is here because then I wouldn't know how to not have a baby thanks school I love the 20 years I spent at you
Arguably the right ( or in about 8% of the population left) hand has 100% efficiency.
This isn't what I expected when I clicked the video
Condom and the pill at the same time
But, but our local catholic priest says contraceptives work through devil magic!
Because they are idiots
@Dan hatman Oh no! And I just paid to grow it another 2 inches!
They are more than likely talking about the morning after pill, killing an already fertilized egg.
They are more than likely talking about the morning after pill, killing an already fertilized egg.
The morning after pill stops ovulation. As a last form of defense, it prevents implantation. It happens naturally all the time. No biggie.
I take my birth control pill at the same time every night, and I've never missed a pill in the year I've been using it. Could this be considered perfect use?
Really informative 👌🏾✨
very informative!
Great video. Those sound effects, though.
Who dislikes this video?
I'm guessing those who don't agree with birth control.
I just did dislike. Why? Because the video portrays spermatozoids with a sad faces seems to suggest that contraception is a bad thing. It also may be interpreted as if the video is saying that a spermatozoid is a human. In addition to that the video does not mention male conceptive, such as vasectomy and contraceptive pills for men. The lack of mention of these methods allows for them to say that women suffer the side effects of contraception. I dislike because I perceive this as an undertone against birth control.
+Alfonso J Ramos (theraot)OK. That's one of you. Now who else disliked this video? Guys..
Sperm have sad face is because they can't do what they're born for, fertilize, not implying that contraceptives is a bad thing. It doesn't mention male contraceptives as it rarely ever leave any consequences on male.
Triggered Feminists
What about the pull-out method?
Precum has sperm in it. So nope. Doesn't work
It does work, has has been used for thousands of years before any of these were invented, it just has lower percentage of working and depends on people more than anything else. So that is why you should not use it unless maybe you are married and thinking a child would be ok but you are not trying right now.
it has a low success rate when perfectly timed, due to fluid often leaking out early, and that rate decreases more with usage
The only contraceptive I need is admitting I laughed at this video for being 4:20
I was hoping it would have stats about getting snipped or tied.
why aren't there vasectomy and other permanent sterilization metods?
not hating, just wondering
because the video is about contraception methods only, it says so in the title, read it.
for some reason i really enjoy it when the sperms get sad
Nice video
Very easy to study
Thank you!
how about considering vasectomy or the other one....the one for female where they cut/tie the fallopian tube
wow. i wasnt ready for that
Aren't the arm implants the best way?
Was a little surprised to see RISUG/VASALGEL passed
over!
Abstinence is key
It is going to take a long time before humans starts to realize what are the consequences or responsibility is but for now contraceptives are the most efficient and effective excuse and if it fails people blames it on the product . However , let us wish the future generations would be more educated and thus would only engage in sexual activities when both parties are matured enough and have the responsibility for the consequences
What is the history of contraception?
2017 we're still not talking about vasectomy
Because it’s not really contraception. It’s permanent. Just like we don’t all talk about using a hysterectomy to prevent pregnancy. Sure they both work but they’re also both permanent
Usually when comes to short term couples I use codoms, but if I get a long term one, I've planed for "suppress" methods.
My teacher assigned me to watch this
4 mins of what your parents shy teaching you
I'm still confused
Can you take plan b anytime during ovulation ???
3:24 let’s GOOO we get the worst of it 😫😫
I got this video from my teacher

The things my health teacher forces me to watch
does the pill affect fertility in the long run, even when a woman stops taking it? I've gotten so many mixed answers on this topic
a pill will always have some sort of a side effect. the severity of which depends on an individual biochemical structure and hormones in her/his body. it is always better to minimise their use and exercise self control.
Try it
Is it just me or does the figures look like pads😂
Same

what if i pull out quick eonough
Not reliable enough.
Sometimes pre cum contains sperm and other times people think they know when they're going to come but it ends up being too late
rolling the dice is half the fun
use all of them at the same time and achieve 1000%
Very interesting, but I've missed some examples of how condoms could be used in the non ideal way. If anyone could explain to me, that be great.
Put it on inside out, using the wrong size, not leaving enough room for the sperm, not being lubricated enough so that it gets pulled off, little rips and holes in the condom etc...
Leaving it in a pocket or wallet using two at once this includes using a male and female one at the same time
leaving it inside of your wet pocket!!
This video is better than sex Ed.
Is a vasectomy not a form of contraception?
