This song makes me think of all the people in the world, living their lives, looking out their windows, going home on the bus, with that same feeling of sadness, what are we all doing here? What is our purpose? We're all just trying to get by, and that sadness follows us, that feeling of hopelessness, with interludes of beauty.
I think that was before the era of the smart phones and social media. Now, I don't see that many people feeling sadness in the subway, but mostly people numb and detached scrolling through glass screens.
On a trip to Spain many years ago, I played Opus 23 for my friend's 3 year old son to help him siesta. He's a teenager now and they sent me a video of him playing it on the piano... Thank you Dustin :)
Not everyone can get enjoyment from that feeling. It's so rare, in fact, that there isn't even a good name for it. "The enjoyment of sorrow". What's the word for that? It's the single greatest emotional experience of my life and I actively seek it out, so that it is so lonely a journey only adds to the pleasure of it. How strange.
It's about love. It's about peace. It's all inside the music itself. I'm speechless. I'm listening. I couldn't figure out. I'm still listening. I hope in reality, there's anyone who can see the heart of mine that I want to love. Thank you Dustin. It's always been pleasant and serene to listen to you. I want emphasize 'listen to "you" ' , for the music itself reveals the part of you. It's been such a pity that I couldn't meet the person who dedicates his/her self to the depth and understanding of such heaviness and gentleness among heart. When I listen more and more, I just realize the gentleness in my heart overflows. Wish for the tranquility inside for those who immerse themselves in sorrow.
The music makes you realize how delicate it all is. To Love. Completely. To Live. Not just be Alive. It’s all so precious. Enjoy them, the moments that make your insides form a smile! Xx
I loved this, and also reminded me of something: Music has always been the most unique and main laguange of all human beings of all times. What I see, hear and feel in this video is how life can be so fickle. Sometimes it feels like heaven, and sometimes it feels like you are drowning, but then music is always there to give you shelter, company, and relief... just like this song. Music is life.
i wish everyone could hear the serenity and beauty in everything, then the world wouldn't be such a bad place till that time comes.. i'll listen to this.
It is maddening to think of all the violence that exists in this world, yet somehow all the more inspiring to think men like you dedicate their lives to producing music like this
Your work, your music, is of the utmost importance to me. They are the melodies that bring feeling to my days, which increase my creativity. Through your work, I can do my own, my drawings and texts. My playlist is all yours. I wanted to thank you, I owe you a lot!
Maybe in 30 Years , when everything is burned and burried. Somene will find an old CD player , play this song , and will think about the forgotten times.Where people with a pure heart and a free mind were able to create suche beautfiul things like this. Thank you Dustin , even in future.
I cant believe its been so long since this was uploaded and I discovered it due to Marie Antoinette. This song has become a track that accompanies my life, follows me around through all my chapters. Would be a great funeral song....just me? haha
So this song came on my Pandora on my Erik Satie channel I let play for my two sons, 3 & 4. My 4 years old spontaneously started to get emotional while standing in the middle of our great room, and started to cry, so I held him and he was crying so hard he couldn't breathe. I asked him what was wrong and he just sat in the corner of the room and tried to hide under his train table., Once this song ended he caught his breath and started to play with his brother again. With that being said I could only attribute the emotion he felt listening to this piece to why he was sad and crying....I had to go back on Pandora to see ensure I had the correct song. Absolutely beautiful and moving. Thank you!
This is beautiful, the music and the video. I sometimes feel like the man in this video...a guy on a solo journey, beautiful things come and go, nothing lasts but I continue my journey.
Such a simple and beautiful song! I love the visual story of one being lost in the depths and finding hope in the piano. There where so many times when my life was difficult, but I always had my piano to stand by me. One true old friend to my soul.
This song reminds me of sitting in windows, watching rain fall. The sky is dark and bumpy, and all you hear is the whisper of the rain and when you open the window, you smell the scent of wet earth. Those days, you seem to reflect back on things, good or bad. Everything is slow, languid, sad in many ways. It's the kind of song where you just want time to stop, to never move on....
I found this to be a perfect song to listen to while watching the clouds pass over through the skylight of the atrium in my town's shabby library while I study. When I listen to this I can imagine what my life will be like after college, after all of the hard work, and what it'll be like to gaze into the eyes of my children when I'm finally at peace--when I can finally sit with a cup of coffee and listen to this song once more without worrying about my grades.
So, how you doin these days? Hope you've had your cup of coffee and isn't worrying about your grades anymore ^^. I know the feeling too, but all this hard-work is gonna make sense and be worth it in a not so distant future. Currently, I'd love to just open the curtains, and stare at the stars and the Moon while listening to this Dustin's beautiful song, but I'm having to study math for a big test on sunday, so... I guess we understand each other's struggles hahah :)
In the video, I felt I saw the life of the actual artist. In the beginning he was floating in the air aimlessly, as some people float in life lacking purpose, then a crow I believe pops his balloon forcing the artist to stay grounded, the bird to me could be someone like a father or an important figure reminding the artist to find something worthwhile. So he plummets down to the ocean and sinks down into the depths of the sea, almost as if one has to really dive deep within oneself to find purpose, asking yourself, "what's important, what's my purpose in life" so he finds himself upon a grand piano, and he plays. In the scene where the mermaid is first introduced, it represents the artist love life, he may have encountered a love with someone. But just as quickly as she came, an giant octupus creeps by and scares the mermiad away. To me the giant octopus represented a great obstacle, a problem, a danger which drove the girl in the artist's life, away. So in the next scene he was found alone with the grand piano, and you see him retreat inside. To me it represented that he used his passion to save him from heartbreak. Next you see the piano submerge, break surface from the depths. And he uses his piano as a life boat to keep him surfaced and to withstand the storms. Sometimes our passions saves us from life's storms..eventually the clouds disperse. Sun comes out. Time has passed and crows appear again bit this time in a large group. To me this is his family for emotional support. In which the following scene you see them elevate him to the skies, but just before that, the mermaid appeara again and gives him a shiney star which he takes. To me this means that the girl he once lost, came back into his life and she gave him unconditional love . So after the crows take him to the skies, they lead him to the city. A land of prosperity, business. And he is set center stage in front of a crowd. To me it signifies that he has made something of himself finally, found his purpose. The glow of the star is found on his chest, and he is inside the piano rather than sitting on the bench stroking the keys. To me it represents that the artist does not do this for fame or money, but for soul, and passion driven. And the love from his mermaid reminds him of that.
Alex Galvan I continually find myself returning to his music, it's so very heartfelt like he expresses himself through the notes...my favorite peace of his is opus 55, that piece moves me in the same way that I'm sure this song does you.
Just beautiful, Dustin. Saw you in Edinburgh and and loved the music and the gentle humour. Am now a big fan. You are doing wonders for my stress levels.
But all my friends have gone. I've loved and I've lost and life goes on. I love the photographs because they hold the world still. But when all is stirring and the moon is bright I lay awake in the middle of the night. I've never met anyone who feels as much as me, and my soul lives in a place that others cannot see. In the end, and even at the beginning fear and courage live inside of me, but one will defeat the other.
Absolutely beautiful. If not for the series, I may have never found you and that would have been a shame. Perfectly played; your music fires up my brain. Thank you. 😊
This is real music. Not the calculated machine noises that the culture industry of today produces. Compare this to the music that was displayed at the VMA's and you will know immediately the difference in authenticity. It makes a pessimist and borderline cultural elitist like myself proud to see that so many others enjoy this music in the world we live.
i shared this video on FB in 12/12/2012 now i see it again after 3 years in same day 12/12/2015 .... i repeat it more than five times,, i really feel great :)
I’ve mastered this whole piece. Being one of the first real songs I learned to play, my instructor started crying when she heard me first play this, stating “This is the first piece I’ve ever heard one of my students play that tells me a true story.” According to her, I hold a natural talent for piano, which I’m happy for. I’ve been passionate for this song before I even began learning the piano. To anyone out there that wants to learn- the songs you’re most passionate about will sound the most beautiful.
This piece is perfect, perfect, perfect. It's what made me so in love with Mr. O'Halloran's work, what I listen to incessantly, which I love infinitely.
This piece of music is simple melodies but yet powerful! So simple but yet a true masterpice. It takes you on a journey of reflection and can visualize the setting through this great work of art. I love it!
The sheet music is available from Dustin O'Halloran's website. I purchased it, and it arrived very quickly from the US. It's not had to play and is lovely. Good luck.
This is what music is all about. The emotions it conjurs up inside... ah beauty! It was the Audi A5 commercial that lead me to find Mr O Halloarn's music.
(sigh) I'm depressed & listening to this song goes with my mood. It sucks being sad & it sucks even more when u see people with a partner & totally focused on their selves, wishing ssoo hard that u r in that same mind set. being a positive person & sometimes focusing on urself is REALLY hard 4 some people.

Steven Lamb that is called "sonder"...
Thank you, I do it often.
Happiness and joy is closer than you believe
Steven Lamb I have same feeling

This makes my heart ache, but in a good way. The kind of way that makes you know you're alive.
It always makes me cry but in a good way... makes me feel so happy and refreshed afterwards.

Beautifully written. You should repoast this as it's own comment instead of buried & hidden under someone else's comment.
I love how you can tell he's playing a real piano, made of wood and steel, not an electronic one. The tone is beautiful and warm and soft and rich.
I love his songs, I remember hearing him for the first time in Marie Antoinette by Sofia Coppola
same here hahaa
Omg me to
Was this song in the movie?
@@Some_One_One yes it was 😍
How can one song tell me more about life then living life itself? Dustin you've created memories
Agreed. I even quoted your comment when I shared this post to FB. :)
Perfectly put
I walked down the aisle to this beautiful song!
Aww bless your soul
It's about love.
It's about peace.
It's all inside the music itself.
I'm speechless.
I'm listening.
I couldn't figure out.
I'm still listening.
I hope in reality, there's anyone who can see the heart of mine that I want to love.
Thank you Dustin.

Melancholic. It makes me cry, reminds me of the time passing by and what was left behind.
This was the music I walked into for my wedding. Still so beautiful.
Me too!!

This song reminds me of how it feels to be in love. Deep, true, passionate love.
