My own theory is that the song we play at the end of the game IS the signal emitted by the Eye of the Universe, and that this is the breadcrumb trail left for the next universe's inhabitants to follow, so that one of them may become a quantum-entangled observer capable of helping shape the next universe and emit the next signal. And every time the Eye's signal is sent, it is the song of a different species, or several different species. This is why the eye's signal precedes the birth of the universe itself. Perhaps it was even always this way. In a reality like that of Outer Wilds, where causality can be waived by certain means... life can be its own creator. The Eye exists outside of time, after all.
I agree with this. We also see universes being born and extinguished while in the eye. It's very likely that because you are outside time when you play your song in the eye, your song stretches across the entire lifespan of your own universe. And also keep in mind that the game heavily emphasizes the idea of effects happening BEFORE causes.
I have always considered the song to be a basis for the next universe. The observer chooses what they want the future universe to function like. In our Hearthian's case: It is through a campfire song. When you see the ending picture, it shows suns in the center of planets with almost a wispy smoke connecting them all, while aliens roast marshmallows on a campfire(if you find solanum)
There are 6 beings you meet at the campfire, we know that the moon is seen in 6 different areas. What if they each made it to the eye and that represents one of the 6 states? They all appear at locations where the moon can be found.
I thought so. I popped it into the void/ often before I jumped into the sky. I couldn’t recall it. At the very end, it amused me so much to look at the campfire and then the scout flies by with its siren blaring. What a great game...
I think a big theme of this game is the inevitability of death in the universe. The Nomai weren't killed by their own technology going too far, they were killed by a wandering comet that seems to have just happened to pass by, and just happened to carry a new matter they've never seen before, which wiped out all life in the solar system. They met such an abrupt end that it was painful to watch. Almost like the supernova that wipes out the Hearthians. Even if the Nomai never existed in their solar system, the Hearthians just had really poor timing, and you, the main character, finally fulfilling your dream of becoming an astronaut, get obliterated by the sun's natural death just minutes later.
@@RomannTW I resonate. After all the big theme of the game is that death doesn't really exist. Things just change. If they wouldn't we would be stuck in an eternal loop. What we call death is in the end just change. A change beyond our imagination.
@@azraelexlibris4663 I feel that an even bigger theme is that death is inevitable and that we cannot prevent it and should instead make the most of the time we have
I personally think the visitors at the campfire represent the player's memory of them. Their music feeding into the universe is the use of the MC's life experience to influence the creation of the new one.
Actually, the music at the campfire does play a role.If you complete the game without EVER having visited the quantum moon and Solanum in any time loop, he and his music will not be present in the creation of the new universe and after the end-credits, at the screen that shows the new planets and stuff it never shows the new intelligent life with their fire and marshmallows.
@@carson7297 The Nomai have binary sexes and reproduce with a male & female. It's the Hearthians that don't seem to have sex and gender. Likely they reproduce like snails where they possess both male and female sexual organs simultaneously.
Solanum, the God of music and knowledge lol. She probably would have been happy knowing she contributed like that. But I wonder, if solanums existence was necessary to the formation of intelligent life in the universe, and Our job was to observe the universe into existence, did all of your friends there have a purpose too?
I finished this game about an hour ago, and pretty late into the game it dawned on me that the absolute first thing you do every time a loop starts is to establish a quantum state. At first I didn't think anything of it and dismissed it as a 'press X to pay respects' moment, but it actually carries meaning. Prior to you opening your eyes, the game's universe is literarily not there. It only starts to exist once you press X. Similarly, the Nomai refer to the entity as the Eye of the Universe. Every now and then, a reference to eyes is made in the game, as in the Nomai's third eye and it being able to observe things differently (as we learn from the records at the Sun Station). Also, they wonder what the Hearthlings' fourth eye does. Expanding on that, what is the purpose of the Eye of the Universe? In any case, just my thoughts. Great video, probably the best at explaining these aspects of Outer Wilds, great job!
I'm doing an informal survey around youtube. Did you consult a guide at any point with this game? Did you ever get stuck and not know where to go or what to do, and if so, how did you overcome this?
I've just finished it like an hour ago too, what an incredible game, 20 years of gaming and it was just a beautiful experience (one of the best I've had). Interesting point btw, I didn't think bout the eyes.
the traveler, with 4 eyes discovers the secrets of a civilization with 3 eyes, while the player who has two eyes attempts to get to the one eye (of the universe)
Ok so here’s my interpretation: The eye is responsible for all the strange properties of the quantum moon, meaning that it causes the moon to change in appearance depending on the planet it orbits. Continuing on that, would it not be reasonable to assume that the eye itself has similar properties? Could those final scenes be caused by the fact that you are in the eye? They all take place in places that are similar to your homeworld, maybe that’s because you are there and the eye is shaping itself around you. You bring the people you met into the eye, to play a song that encapsulates the universe, one for each planet, the 5 hearthians, and then solanum for the rest, the nomai plays for the unknown. By gathering those 6 people, you gather the entire universe. Then, as they converge, each one coming together when you ask them to play, the universe itself becomes a quantum object. So what would happen if an observer were to enter the eye, if an observer were to observe the entire universe of possibilities, forcing them into a single point? Well the universe in a single point, a singularity? Those are the conditions required for a Big Bang aren’t they? The beginning of a universe. By entering they eye, you are able to see the universe, observe it, and make it anew.
Very interesting idea. The only thing i would argue is that Solana was born in the solar system so she doesn't really know much about anything outside of it. She is pretty simular to the Hetharians in that regard. Her existence in the mind of a player influences the liferoms in the future universe but the basic structure is either embedded in the eye itself or in the player's existence.
While I like where you went with this video, I still think you sold the ending a bit short in some respects. The campfire scene with all the characters wasn’t _just_ a stageplay farewell sequence for fun. In my opinion, it was also consistent in the question Solanum - and by extension, the player - asks after understanding the quantum elements of the Eye: what would happen if a conscious observer went into the Eye of the Universe? My interpretation was that our subconscious would become the “conscious”, and that’s why we see projections of our friends around the familiar. Our subconscious observations surfaced and became physically present, whether they were really there or not. It wasn’t just a random contrived goodbye, it was cleverly consistent with the game’s enigmatic nature of quantum mechanics. As for your assumption that “what we do know is that the Eye needs a conscious observer to create life”, I don’t think that is something we “know” nor was it the point. I think the overall point of that ending was, all things are finite, and this would’ve happened with or without us. The universe is indifferent, and the chaos in it happens even if we don’t see it. Our character was lucky enough to get to see its final stages transpire despite that, and was able to finish discovering what the Nomai started. What the ending revealed was that the game was about the inevitability of death, and the acceptance that all things eventually come to an end, but that doesn’t necessarily mean new beginnings can’t come out from the ashes. Nevertheless, however we individually interpret it, this game is one hell of an emotional ride, and everyone needs to play it at least once. It’s more than a game, it’s an experience.
I think without our character entering the eye the next universe wouldn’t have been created, Solanum says that there is a certain amount of uncertainty in the universe, which is why things that are quantum are quantum, there place isn’t certain, when we look at a quantum object solanum says that it is brought to a single possibility, which is why they stay in place when we look at them, that is there certain location at the moment, the eye is quantum, and by entering it we make it conform to a single possibility, and that possibility is the new universe, that’s why the eye is older than the universe itself, because the eye is responsible for making the universe, it’s an endless loop of the universe ending and then a conscious observer entering and creating a new universe with the eye, making it always older than the universe
Thanks for this. My mother died the morning after I finished the game. Always wanted to understand what was going on better, but I turn into a mess just getting to the menu screen. Timing... And, without knowing about this game, the last thing she did before cancer took her mind was to draw an Outer Wide style rendition of me as a spaceman, months before release. I just can't... euargh, lol. Thanks for walking me through the ending.
Wow man so sorry to hear. My mom passed away from cancer too. This game brought me to the core of my being. But hey just like Outer Wilds, even with a tragic ending, the journey and experiences with them are what we cherish. Peace
First off, I am sorry for your loss. I don’t normally write comments but this one hit home. I just wanted to say that the point I took from the game is, the meaning of the universe is life. And the power of that life to create more life. You are the meaning of your mothers universe. And you should be very proud of that, and try not to dwell at the inevitability of “the end”. Focus on your “meaning of the universe” which might be your children one day. God bless you.
I tend to think of the eye as sentient. It called to the Nomai causing them to set up the apparatus needed to get the later hearthian to the eye. They had a different plan and appear to have failed, but they really got the ball rolling for the next reboot of the universe. The fate of the hearthian's appears tragic, but they are in the right place at the right time. All according to plan. Loved the game.
I think the campfire scene was really very important. The Nomai wrote about the eye being “malleable” and I think our character really paves the way for the new universe by influencing the eye with their experiences, in the form of the final song. We can see how we influence the new universe in the nomai woman. Whether you meet her or not changes the new species. I do think the friends were just a manifestation of main character’s subconsciousness but that doesn’t make them any less important.
Biggest "oh shit" moment of the game is when you found solanum alive and well. There's technically a different ending you get if you take the ash twin warp core to her and wait for the sun to go.
The eye of the universe is us, the observer. The song at the end is the signal emitted toward the eye/audience which initiates the conception of the universes of thought within our minds.
Just wanted to say that this video was perfectly concise and well narrated. It was exactly what I needed after the emotional experience of playing Outer Wilds. I know you don't upload videos any more, and this video isn't normally the kind of content you upload, but it was fantastic and I'd love to see more from you.
One interpretation that I have about the ending is that because the solar system you explore is functioning in a quantum way, it could very well be the case that we are inside the singularity before the Big Bang, and the explosion at the end is the universe finally coming into existence. Might be completely off, but it's just one thought I had.
Wow this game is such an art piece. Its a very beautiful experience. There is so much to interpret and pull from. Perhaps what we interpret is somewhat a reflection of ourselves just as much as a imparted message from the creators of the game. It feels like the game is centered around life on a grand scale within the human perception. What is existence if there is no one to experience it? what is the universe without a sentience to appreciate itself? I think these questions are pondered. All of a sudden, just by being an observer of existence, we breath a whole new dimension of life into the universe. The game asks what does it mean to be quantumly entangled and an observer, and I think it showed that in the context presented that means there are infinite possibilities, infinite universe bursting into life, and exploding into death like flash of fireworks. In many ways the game seems bleak and yet so hopeful. We are doomed to die and fail in what may be a cold unfeeling universe, but we breath life into existence, and we are not in it alone. Although we may have a limited time being a piece of the universe experiencing its self, it is bursting with endless potential and value which in simply observing can we breath life. It seems as though even when one life, or species, or solar system , or even universe meets its end... there seems to be room for another and another story yet to be told.
You become a Boltzmann brain, a sentient being with all the memorises of a human wich is created par random quatum fluctutations. And i think the grey collumns reppresents the quantum world
I'm pretty sure at the final campfire Solanum wasn't creating the ball but was playing the song on her staff, which kinda sounded like a piano or something.
Oh 100% the eye was sentient. There were too many visual scenes at the end. Between being shown the altered observatory, walking around the glade, singing with friends, etc., the eye wanted to show you that. It needed to be observed by another sentient being to create the new universe. Hence the call went out. If the eye was just an inanimate object, then you would jump through the black hole, the screen would go black, and the credits would roll.
A bit late, but so much this. The eye called out, but the Nomai arrived too soon, thus once they setup the system that could send life to the eye they were eliminated to allow life to come to the eye at the very end of the universe instead.
Your voice is very soothing, I almost felt like I was in a science talk while watching this. To boot, I had the Stellaris Soundtrack quiet in the background, so it gave some very nice cosmic ambiance to the vid. Thank you for this.
Great video, thanks. After experiencing "this kind of story" I always feel an urge to discuss and hear other interpretations of what's going on. Thumbs up!👍
It's also theorized that at the lowest level the universe is built off all vibrations, so the music at the end and using the scope to hunt out those musical vibrations, helps to build the new universe.
I had no idea what I was getting into with this game, I thought it was just going to be relaxing time waster with a cute art style. Lol I was so unprepared for the depth this game had to offer but man am I glad that stumbled into it. It's without a doubt the best game I have ever played. The story, the exploring, the environment, the music, all so good
Thanks so much for watching! I had a very similar experience. And the music is absolutely incredible. If you haven't played the DLC, I highly recommend you do. Well worth it!
@@samhalcyon6741 I'm in the process of playing through it, it's a challenge because you play it so differently than you play the rest of the game with not being able to use your ship and such but it seems very interesting so far
Just finished this gem. I also like to think this game occurs one universe after our own, given that the voyager can be seen in the solar system much like our own scout.
I imagine the Eye’s role is to tie the universe into a continual loop. It’s as old as time itself, and lived through both the last universe’s destruction and the current one’s creation: it stands to reason that it’s responsible for the creation of every new cycle, not just this one. I also personally believe it’s not only sentient, but omnipotent. It otherwise feels just TOO convenient that everything falls into place, the Nomai set up just enough resources for the player to find the Eye moments before the universe dies. Remember that it stopped transmitting, which is the whole reason the Ash Twin project started and the statues were created. Without that, the Hearthian would’ve just died on the first cycle without a way to travel back in time. It doesn’t make sense for all these things to happen so perfectly without someone- or something- orchestrating it. On a mostly unrelated but equally interesting note, Solanum doesn’t show up if you never met her. She also thanks the Hearthian for remembering her. This leads me to believe that all the characters showing up at the end is more proof that the Eye is aware; it hand-selected these people specifically because of their connection to the player. The other option is that these people show up because this is just in the player’s imagination, but I really don’t think that’s the case.
I wonder what would've happened if no conscious observer entered the eye. Would existence itself just be over? Would a new universe still spring up, being chosen at random, somewhat like the random nature of the quantum objects? Good video btw :D
It’s likely that the Eye of The Universe would remain in an uncertain state, being unable to generate the physical properties to make the next universe without a conscious observer, leading to, as what is seen if you look around at the stars as you are on the Eye, all the stars dying
We were there together. The final voices of a dying universe, passing the torch to the next one. May their campfires be surrounded by good cheer, good friends. And most important of all...marshmallows.
One thing: I'm fairly certain that the points of light and the one we interact with at the top of the museum in the ending, 13:30, are GALAXIES, not UNIVERSES. The distinction is important since in the observatory section of the museum, you can see written notes detailing that the "stars" shown in the accompanying pictures are actually galaxies, with hundreds of billions of stars of their own, and that they are all moving away from us (the observer). If they were universes, why would every universe be dying simultaneously? It is likely that universes with different laws of physics or different starting points or times may "die" at completely different times than "ours." Plus, there's actually been no outright mention of a true multiverse in Outer Wilds, only the prospect of a cyclical universe that creates the conditions for it to be created.
I think at 14:00 its not necessarily a multiverse but more so the eye showing us the history of past universes that have also experienced the same heat deaths, not sure tho but thats wha pt i thought
Like all quantum objects in the game they are at all points until observed, the eye is the same. The universe is in all possible variation until you observe it and create the new universe, depending on what you experienced depends on who you are and so you observe the universe differently
I do wonder why it says specifically, "_14.3_ billion years later" ... It may sound crazy, but I can't help wondering if it's a reference to Mister Rogers, for whom the number 143 held cosmic significance. And I'm pretty sure the Nomai and the Hearthians would have liked him.
I think the main character is entering another higher dimension, where you can see all the universe there is. and where all universes is created. basically he become God. and in the end, he created a new universe with passion from the old one he lived in. all the music, and traditions he knew, poured into this new universe. it is beautiful, and can be interpreted in many ways...
Simple and clear explanation. I do think there's a bit more meat here and there, and definitely a lot more that is purposefully left to interpretation, but at a surface level this is a great summary of the ending. I'm still trying to work out what the signal itself was, especially since they mention that it was "older than the universe", so it must've been something from a previous universe? Was the previous universe the same one? Is it on a loop? Is it a like a torch being passed on to the next person on every iteration?
the signal would be the door to the ancient glade imo, since what the nomai detected was the anomalous energy surrounding the planet, the little symbol they have for the eye of the universe is actually the signal they got i think
I really liked your explanation, I feel like I understood the ending I little bit better , great video btw , loved the game’s soundtrack in the background while you explained , im subscribing
"there are trees everywhere, they are drawn to this tree metaphor".Interesting, but their graphical designer stated he spend his childhood playing in the national as the inspiration for the trees and campfires on the planets.
I believe that the Nomai actually are the bug people, since when we collect Solanum in the ancient glade, there are those same bug people reaching upwards towards her and her presence there is what causes the bug people to be at the end It’s probable that with the universe resetting, the Nomai eventually come back, and what we see at the end is the Nomai starting their journey all over again, which’ll eventually lead back into the game
You are actually 100% correct. I did another video (in the description above) after finishing the dlc. If you don't meet Solanum on the Quantum Moon and go straight to the Eye, the bugs don't actually appear at the end credits.
Great video! There was one thing that I caught as I am watching that you got wrong, at 13:20 you are talking about the part of the game where you witness the heat death of the universe, in the video you say the last stars are going supernova, what actually is happening is those are the last "white dwarf stars" or "neutron stars" dying out, t this point in the universe all regular stars are long gone and the only thing left is black holes and these white dwarf stars which are essentially mini black holes that are very different from normal stars and they do not go supernova.
Thanks so much for watching my video and for your thought provoking comment. While I think you may be correct in saying that near the end of the Heat Death of the universe, all that would be left would be the core remnants of stars that had gone supernova such as neutron stars and white dwarfs, in this game the stars are most definitely going supernova. As you rightly said, neutron stars and white dwarfs are too small to go supernova so perhaps the time period is not as close to the end as you're suggesting, or perhaps it was an oversight on behalf of the developers. Sometimes scientific accuracy can get in the way of good story-telling :)
It’s amazing how few videos there are on TH-cam which actually explain the story of Outer Wilds, rather than go into speculative theories like this. Quite frustrating!
I crashed my ship with the good warp core in it as I was making my way through dark bramble towards the vessel, I shot out a dark bramble seed (one where there's 3 anglers) and I hit the wall on my way out of the seed, stupid angler moved and boom
Everything on the quantum physics realm fits into what I found, except I never got the multiverse impression. It was my impression that the eye of the universe was the location where the Big Bang of this universe begins, and is also the epicenter of all quantum physics. What I got from this was that once the eye is observed, it causes all of reality and the universe to collapse into a singularity. Then the power of the quantum eye drew from the memories of the observer to decide the method by which the Big Bang is caused, and the ultimate result of that event.
Thanks for watching my video and taking the time to comment. You are actually spot on. The forest with the fading lights not actually a multiverse, it's a representation of the Hearthian universe at the end of its lifespan and all of its galaxies and stars are running out of fuel and dying out. I've recently done an updated video to include the events of the dlc. You can find a link in the descption below the video 👆 Don't watch it if you haven't played Echoes of the Eye as its packed with spoilers!
I feel like the echoes of the eye dlc sort of confirms that it was just emitting the signal without sentience, and the inhabitants/strangers/whatever they’re called made it look like it was intentional.
I like the idea that the eye requires a conscious observer to create. If there are infinite possibilities, than there are infinite scenarios in which conscious observers made it to the eye as well as ones were no one did. Though if it exists in a quantum state, would that make it impossible for a conscious observer to fail to make it? It would have to be a universe wherein life never existed to start with. Though that in and of itself may also prove impossible…hmm
The game seems to evoke a lot ideas from biocentrism theory of Robert Lanza . I'm a bit of a layment with this sort of stuff but If I recall and understand it correctly, the idea is life and consciousness are fundamental to the universe, rather than being byproducts of it. He proposes that biology, not physics, is the central driving force in the cosmos, and that our perception of space and time arises from our consciousness. Essentially it's life and consciousness that creates the observable universe not the other way around.
Too much for my thinking😁 i liked the world, the concept is amazing. But gameplay started to annoy very quickly. So i've decided to spare my time and watch a video. Thank you for the explanation! Nice one👍👏
I believe that the eye does call out a sentient. This is because it can only exist once an observer reaches it, per quantum laws. If there was no observer by the time the universe collapses, how would the Eye then create a new universe. It needs an observer. So every cycle it must call out for an intelligent species
Kinda makes me think that the heat death of the universe that we witness is also the big bang... And the only real difference between the two is how we observe it... Though going by the game there might be set limits for it to also be the big bang... Otherwise it's just the heat death... Though technically it could still be both of the process is still technically quantum entanglement...
sentient = sapient TREES are sentient. Humans (and perhaps dolphins and certain bird species and apes) are sapient. Sentient just means you can sense the world. Sapient means you've got some concept of a Self.
Thanks so much for watching my video and for taking the time to leave a comment. I'm not sure you are completely accurate though. Sentience is the ability to feel and perceive which means trees are not sentient, unless we're talking Lord of the Rings trees. Sapient means, of the Homo Sapien, which is specifically us, humans.
@@exu7325 There have been countless experiences of dogs and cats looking in a mirror and you can observe them as they start to figure out the concept of self. At first they du not realise, then they start testing, then they move on and are more cautious. They stop overeating, they start being a lot more aware of their body, less tail chasing, fewer kicks to their own head, and more alertedness. Apes have scientifically shown sapience in multiple occasions although it has been taught. But you are right he probably mean sentient is not sapient.
Nice video, I'm here just to specify something (even though I might have misinterpreted your words): the "saying" about the tree falling when nobody is around is not about quantum physics, it comes from George Berkeley, 18° century idealist philosopher!
You talked about "nothing is faster then the speed of light". well, universe expansion is faster. if not, there should be light outside of the universe or multiverse. we are also accelerating. or rather, everything in the universe is still accelerating. how do we know? we have measured the distances between stars. After awhile you will be able, with some measurement tools and simple math, to calculate the distance the star should travel from one and another in "X" time. The problem was that we noticed we were wrong. Why? Because the distance between the stars were far greater then we calculated. were our calculations wrong? no. the idea that a "bang" happened and "mass" came into existence from this phenomena we call "big bang" from a singularity point can for sure be right. But if you throw a stone into the air it will eventually reach a "top speed". it doesn't matter if you throw it on earth, in space, in total vacuum, upwards, downwards, left, right, south, north or what not. At some point it will reach a top speed. So the same should apply to any "mass" or atom, planet, star, galaxy that are in existence. What is so ***God*** damn lovely about the universe is that its not. The distance between stars, galaxies, planets are increasing and still do. Even though the universe is so old that stars are srsrly starting too collapse, not to glow anymore, to implode, to become a Super Novas. So where is everything accelerating too or towards? We are moving towards what is named "The Great Attractor". And what is that? No Clue. for sure the greatest Troll that is/are/will be is the "joker", "trixster" "God", "Nature", "The Eye", "the will", "The Dao" or what you want too call "it". and everyone else we call a "troll" is but a mere wannabe shadow of the True Trixster. Either that OR we move backwards in TIME. So we are not really accelerating. It's decreasing. We just observe, feel and live in it the other way around. Backwards if you will. So we are not from the singularity point in big bang. we are moving towards it in a decreased speed and will (as we know) end up at and in a singularity point knowned as "big bang". With this theory we can explain the big bang, the acceleration of the mass in the universe (that is proven) and alot of everything. My conclusion? we are full blowned retards that doesnt even understand the proper way to behave in "life" so "life" is trying to help us by showing the "last pages in the book". Yet we didnt understand..So now its showing us, the observers of the universe, the entire "movie" backwards. Or.. Life is the best practical joke and God is the biggest troll ever. And I fakkking love it! Ignorance is bliss and we are the proof of that :) Best Regards Tronkan
Still curious: the Nomai failed in using the Sun Station to turn the Sun into a supernova. But it still does. What does this mean? I read a guide hinting at this, but never giving a solution. Why is there still a supernova?
Simple, like the other guy said, the Sun Station did absolutely nothing to the Sun, the Sun went Supernova during the Heat Death of the Universe. It had reached the end of it’s Life Cycle.
You are correct good sir. Someone else also pointed that out to me, however it is a question that has intrigued quantum physicists in modern times from a scientific perspective. Phenomenology deals with philosophical consciousness and quantum physics in a way deals with the nature of reality at an atomic level so there's quite a bit of cross-over. I had no idea that the idea originally came from philosophical musings. I'm still not quite sure I fully understand it from a philosophical perspective.
I loved this video, I really did. It was insightful and thoughtful and told in a calm and agreeable way. I also cannot properly describe how the sound of you constantly smacking your lips ruined the whole experience for me. My god. You have a microphone close to you. Stop it.
I think this explanation is too hands off. Everything in the game points to you having an actual affect on whatever it is you’re seeing. That’s the whole point of the quantum mechanics. When you fall through the goop and land in the observatory, I think that’s you actually seeing the eye. But you just can’t comprehend it. That’s why it looks like other things throughout the game. You’re observing that universes’ death and every other universe, but then when you start adding your own stuff, you have an influence on this new universe being created. You have an impact on it by simply observing the eye, whatever that is. (Again; I don’t think you can actually see the eye because it just doesn’t make sense to your brain). So I think when you see the universe being created you have direct impact on that thing and the eye might not be sentient, but in the same way that a non sentient tree wants to keep sucking in carbon dioxide and expel oxygen, the eye wants there to be universe. That’s just what it is and what it does. So it might not be sentient exactly, but it just nudges you along what it considers to be the ‘right path’ which is how the nomad first got the message. It may be an accident, but I think the eye understood (in whatever way it can understand) that this path would allow it’s universes to go on. That’s what I think anyway after just finishing it last night
Thanks for watching my video! I'm assuming where you're from it's pronounced similar to "heart". Where I come from, we pronounce it similar to "earth". Potato, potaato :)
This theory legit blew my mind. Holy shit.
@@tc2241 too far. I don’t think so
If you shoot your scout out of the eye of the universe you see it fly by later in the end credit scene
I thought so. I popped it into the void/ often before I jumped into the sky. I couldn’t recall it. At the very end, it amused me so much to look at the campfire and then the scout flies by with its siren blaring. What a great game...
I did the same exact thing with my scout. I couldn't help but bust a chuckle when I saw it flying across the sky in the end screen.
lmaoo i saw that i was like wtf is that thing flying across my screen
Oh that what it was
@Camden Anders wtf
@@azraelexlibris4663 I feel that an even bigger theme is that death is inevitable and that we cannot prevent it and should instead make the most of the time we have
Just call you Chuck
I personally think the visitors at the campfire represent the player's memory of them. Their music feeding into the universe is the use of the MC's life experience to influence the creation of the new one.
especially true considering that if you don't find Solanum in the sixth location, she isn't present in the ending.

Actually, the music at the campfire does play a role.If you complete the game without EVER having visited the quantum moon and Solanum in any time loop, he and his music will not be present in the creation of the new universe and after the end-credits, at the screen that shows the new planets and stuff it never shows the new intelligent life with their fire and marshmallows.
iirc Solanum is referred to with 'she' pronouns.
@@Transformers2Fan1 I thought they were all 'They/Them' pronouns?

Great observations! The waking and the theme with the eyes.
I'm doing an informal survey around youtube. Did you consult a guide at any point with this game? Did you ever get stuck and not know where to go or what to do, and if so, how did you overcome this?
Hindus, New Agers and others often talk about our "third eye", and the Nomai literally had one!
Ok so here’s my interpretation:
The eye is responsible for all the strange properties of the quantum moon, meaning that it causes the moon to change in appearance depending on the planet it orbits.
Exactly what I was thinking!
I'm so sorry to hear that but am glad you were able to get some small comfort from this video.
I hope you have found peace astronaut :)
If you ever read me, a virtual hug
When a conscious observer enters the eye, a universe of possibilities collapse to a single point.
It's a pretty good video about this epic sublime game. Deserves more attention.
Just finished it 10 minutes ago, feeling heartwarmed but confused at the same time
(havent watched your vid yet)
I had a very similar experience. Hits you right in the feels.
And i think the grey collumns reppresents the quantum world
I thought of the weird gooey matter as being literally your brain. As in your funnelled into your memories, which could explain the rest as well
A game I wanted to finish but never to end
I'm pretty sure at the final campfire Solanum wasn't creating the ball but was playing the song on her staff, which kinda sounded like a piano or something.
Correct! Solanums piano
I was a pleasure to hear your interpretation of this game.
Great soothing voice :)
Great stuff man, really good analysis and completely unpretentious.

Awesome video! I wasn't familiar with some of the physics related aspects to the ending so it was great to get some insight.
Just finished this gem. I also like to think this game occurs one universe after our own, given that the voyager can be seen in the solar system much like our own scout.
Finally an analysis that doesn't use sketchy physics terminology, no more than the game intended at least.
The Ash Twin project starts because of the sun explosion, it is what powers up the whole project and why the nomai couldn´t activate it earlier
Thank you for this. This game was simply beautiful, and now one of my favs of all time. I think you nailed the breakdown.
It is likely that universes with different laws of physics or different starting points or times may "die" at completely different times than "ours."
Plus, there's actually been no outright mention of a true multiverse in Outer Wilds, only the prospect of a cyclical universe that creates the conditions for it to be created.
I think at 14:00 its not necessarily a multiverse but more so the eye showing us the history of past universes that have also experienced the same heat deaths, not sure tho but thats wha pt i thought
Please do an updated video post echoes of the eye. So much more we’ve learned and it’s amazing
I've heard good things. Definitely planning on doing a play-through. Watch this space :)
You might be onto something there 😆
I think the main character is entering another higher dimension, where you can see all the universe there is. and where all universes is created. basically he become God. and in the end, he created a new universe with passion from the old one he lived in. all the music, and traditions he knew, poured into this new universe.
it is beautiful, and can be interpreted in many ways...
I believe that the Nomai actually are the bug people, since when we collect Solanum in the ancient glade, there are those same bug people reaching upwards towards her and her presence there is what causes the bug people to be at the end
It’s probable that with the universe resetting, the Nomai eventually come back, and what we see at the end is the Nomai starting their journey all over again, which’ll eventually lead back into the game
You are actually 100% correct. I did another video (in the description above) after finishing the dlc. If you don't meet Solanum on the Quantum Moon and go straight to the Eye, the bugs don't actually appear at the end credits.
Just finished this game not 30 minutes ago. Fantastic video, thank you so much!!

After finishing the game what confuses me is the colorful sky that looks like if the phantom matter has spread all over the protagonist's solar system
I loved this game and I really love your voice. So much sub.
Finished the game yesterday, but despite gathering every bit of Nomai text, I still don't know what I really did.
I was also a little confused at the end, which is why I felt compelled to make this vid. I hope it helps.
I have a feeling that this “new universe” is actually our solar system. I mean it’s a hunch but, “the Big Bang theory”?
I feel like the echoes of the eye dlc sort of confirms that it was just emitting the signal without sentience, and the inhabitants/strangers/whatever they’re called made it look like it was intentional.
Omg u deserve more than 12 subs great video
Nice one👍👏
Je chercher des explications merci infiniment ta vidéo est incroyable !
I believe that the eye does call out a sentient. This is because it can only exist once an observer reaches it, per quantum laws. If there was no observer by the time the universe collapses, how would the Eye then create a new universe. It needs an observer. So every cycle it must call out for an intelligent species
So good I wish I could delete my memory just to relive it all again ❤
Kinda makes me think that the heat death of the universe that we witness is also the big bang... And the only real difference between the two is how we observe it... Though going by the game there might be set limits for it to also be the big bang... Otherwise it's just the heat death... Though technically it could still be both of the process is still technically quantum entanglement...
Deep video and beautiful game, thank you for talking about this!
I enjoyed this. Thank you
sentient = sapient
TREES are sentient.
=? Maybe you meant =/=? And dolphins, apes, etc. aren't sapient. Humans are the only sapient beings on Earth.
Thanks for watching, and thanks for pointing that out. My philosophical knowledge is very poor.
Maybe the developers were just alluding to that saying because it played very well with the quantum physics theme.
The eye of the universe is god. Its the lower case g, god. The agnostic kind. The spark that begins it all. And its too complex to really ever know.
Nice vid mate

DLC might be on its way mate
Ignorance is bliss and we are the proof of that :) Best Regards Tronkan
hmm, my comment was unessesary. you said "no mass is faster then light". and that is true.
When you practice you're latin homework and you hear the music start playing
Thank you for your explanation
I think the Nomai were wiped out by the ghost matter comet that entered the solar system.
Damn something about The topic nad low quality of you mic makes this video Special...
Maybe the real Eye of the Universe is the friends we made along the way
just beat the game nice video bro
The end of the game made me cry
I think -- bit far stretched -- the end picture represents insects doing to same we did and yet again create a new universe.
Great video fitting for an awesome game. Will subscribe to your channel 👍
Still curious: the Nomai failed in using the Sun Station to turn the Sun into a supernova. But it still does. What does this mean? I read a guide hinting at this, but never giving a solution. Why is there still a supernova?
The star came to the end of its natural life cycle
Simple, like the other guy said, the Sun Station did absolutely nothing to the Sun, the Sun went Supernova during the Heat Death of the Universe. It had reached the end of it’s Life Cycle.
@@GC-fg4hq @Nick Calderon That's what I also gathered. The guide I read hinted at something more going on, but this is just it, I think.
The metaphor of the tree in the forest deals with phenomenology, not quantum physics.
It's a shame how the nomai died 😭 I was shocked how they died 😭
Good vid loved this game
One of my favourite games.
I loved this video, I really did. It was insightful and thoughtful and told in a calm and agreeable way.
I also cannot properly describe how the sound of you constantly smacking your lips ruined the whole experience for me. My god. You have a microphone close to you. Stop it.
Neil deGrasse Tyson is more like Bill Nye than Eistein
Yes, a far better comparison
They may not be geniuses, but what I like about both Tyson and Bill Nye is they are genuinely trying to get people interested in science again.
Well, Bill Nye got alot more people interested in science than Einstein did.
THE GAME WAS JUST 100/10!
Liked your video, but please google the pronunciation of "hearth"
Thanks for watching my video! I'm assuming where you're from it's pronounced similar to "heart". Where I come from, we pronounce it similar to "earth". Potato, potaato :)
Or the first h in hearth might be silent so...timber "earth"?
Good video
