[212] How to Build an In-Tank DIY PVC Eggcrate Turtle Basking Area

  • I did a short video explaining making one of these basking areas and people wanted a step by step instructional video. I needed to make a couple more so I made one real fast. As long as you have the tools to cut the PVC, it should cost somewhere about $40-50. For the most part, you don't need to have exact measurements to make this basking area, so long as the pieces that go together are the same length. Requires 2 90 elbows, 6 tees, 4 corner fittings, a sheet of eggcrate lighting diffuser and some zipties. Nothing is cemented in place, so you can reuse all the fittings and adjust easily.

    Thank you brother....my turtle has grown a little...Was staying in a tank with very little space & water level only about a centimetre above his shell (turtle could only walk having no water depth to swim)....so now when I started setting up a big tank for him, biggest problem was to give him a basking area above water surface, along with deep enough water for him to be able to swim.....Those branded/readymade basking docks aren't available here in Indian markets...Watched a lot of videos for ideas, so far you had the best one, with that ramp to climb up....so the ideas from you & one other video were helpful for me, made a pretty decent one for my turtle...

      No problem, you should be able to make something similar to this to fit inside your tank or tub. Don;t make the fit too tight to the glass or food will get stuck against the glass.

      @@KniceTurtles oh yes....I measured it to make it fit the sides of tank & and it was slightly fitting at first when I roughly joined the pipes....but later when I pushed the pipes all the way in to the joints....it became very much loose, now there's enough space on the sides....so there won't be a problem and also I feed the turtle in a separate box the food ain't gonna be an issue....

    I just happened to stumble to your channel. Great idea with the PVCs. Nice collection of albino RES you got. New sub. Keep up the good work.

    Does the egg crate not hurt the turtles feet? I saw one where someone put a piece of tile on it.

      If you live in the United States, you can buy it at any lowes or home depot. Its called eggcrate lighting diffuser. You can also use turf drainage tiles.

    Love your setups. What is the name of those stock tanks you have?

    New sub, best basking platform I have seen yet. Ty for sharing this video. Love your RES. In total, what is the cost of making this? Also, can I add fake grass to the top of the egg crate areas?

    • @KniceTurtles
      @KniceTurtles  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The cost really comes from what material youre going to be using. I wouldnt use less than 1.5 inch pvc as the 1 inch isnt structurally strong. But it should be about $65 about just because the sheets of eggcrate run for about $18 a piece these days.

      @@KniceTurtles ty, will head to home Depot this weekend. I'm going to attempt the hanging one instead. Our res is a big girl. We have a 70g tote for her.

      @@azbrown_knight8240 Only thing id advise, is to make sure you hang it low enough that the turtle cant climb out of the tank when sitting on the top platform. My turtles never did but it was always something I would worry about.

    I just used free rocks from the river. Only cost me my back dragging the big one up the bank lol

    • @KniceTurtles
      @KniceTurtles  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used to use heavy rocks like that too until I realized that I didn't want to always need someone else to help me move things around. Although if I could get em for free, I'd probably use them in these ponds hahaha.

    Hey, looks great. How do you prevent the ramp from sinking if you have a large turtle?

    • @KniceTurtles
      @KniceTurtles  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The ramp is so stiff from the friction, it will never sink. If you build it this way, you can always use pvc primer and pvc cement to make it permanent. I sometimes see 10 full grown turtles on a single one of these basking areas.

    These are perfect, I made a similar design but I found mine to crack! lol

    • @KniceTurtles
      @KniceTurtles  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The eggcrate cracked? Thats happened to me from rough handling and the zipties being too tight as well. Im sure if you undersize the eggcrate a little and ziptie it loose but firm, it shouldnt crack.

    • @turtlegeckosailor
      @turtlegeckosailor 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Knice Turtles I believe I had zip them too tight, it didn’t help with a heavy turtle! lol

      @@turtlegeckosailor Thats true. I was thinking that i should use astroturf drainage cells. It basically serves the same purpose but really robust and meant to take some damage.

    Did you go with 1" piping? Would you recommend 1" for adult red eared ? 2" looks too expensive.
