- GREAT NEWS! A brand new series of HORRIBLE HISTORIES starts on CBBC on 31st May 2010!! In the meantime... A classic from series 1: Ever wondered what rules there were aboard a real Pirate ship? Quite a lot apparently.
The rules also included no alcohol on board. As a Welshman, he was fine with theft but dead against intemperance among his crew. He was the most successful pirate, with over 500 ships taken in a career only ended by a cannon ball ripping his throat out.
What about his arch rival. Captain Henry Morgan?

Batholomew "Black Bart" Roberts was one of the most famous pirates ever. He was a true gentleman pirate, and let his captives live for the most part. Sensible business. The more people you spare, the more there are to spread stories about you and give ya a better reputation.

apart from the bedtime and punishment if you disobey the rules, it sounds like life in this crew was alot of fun! 😂

Rule 5: No women to be brought onboard. Pirates thought it was actually bad luck. Crazy but all true.

The phrase "gentleman pirate" seems to be an oxymoron.
The Black Spot is actually fictional... not historical. It may have historical roots, in that pirates sometimes showed a traitor an Ace of Spades to put them "on the spot" that their life was in danger. The idea of just a block spot comes from Robert Louis Stevenson's novel "Treasure Island".
Here's the thing: a pirate's life was not much different than that of an able-bodied seaman. Except: less chance of suffering the lash and more chance of making a bit of gold.

Many pirates were sailors who'd escaped from military and merchant ships, that they'd been press-ganged onto to begin with and were basically slaves while they were there. "Sodomy, rum, and the lash" is not just a saying. It's no wonder that once free they decided on more civilized rules for their ships.
@ziggy6848 Actually, Bartholomew "Black Bart" Roberts and Black Beard (Edward Teach) were two completely different people. No one could claim that Roberts had one man more than the crew on board his ship.

It's not the gold that makes people love them so much - surprisingly un-ironically, considering they were lean mean killing machines who stole everything from people who were better than them, with captains who killed their first mates for lack of plunder and married hordes of child-girls.
And if they make some rollicking heavily glorified series called Pirates, everyone'll watch it, and fork out 8 quid to watch the latest Pirates of the Caribbean rollick.
Better than vampires, though, right?

this one really wasn't quite as funny as the others... BUT DON'T take me wrong. it's not boring and i like it.

Well, a great deal of pirates were refugees from the Royal Navy, so it was just a matter of time before this kind of thing happened.
@leelee403 The crew vote on everything, Jacks crew voted to depose him and place his first mate Barbossa in charge, they could do that if the crew thought the captain wasn't looking out for their intrests enough. Several less famous pirate captains have been marooned because of mutiny. Jacks crew mutinied as they didn't think he could lead them to treasure, a problem shown at the start of Dead Mans chest
@mii284 He wasn't a pirate. He was a privateer, a kind of legal pirate who could maraud and pillage anything that wasn't British because he was a Welshman. The only problem with this free naval career was that the Government could say 'Henry who?' if he was captured. The British gave him ships and a knighthood for his services. But he did accidentally sink both flagships the British gave him. Good in a fight, bad at preserving ships
