I am of North African (Algerian) descent. I am sick and tired of my ancestors’ (Berbers) history being erased by the BBC and others. Stolen in fact! Most North Africans today are Mediterranean looking, and there is a great diversity in phenotypes. I only have to look at my own family. Here in the UK most people think I am white French, until I tell them my ethnic origins. I think I would have blended in nicely in Roman Africa, which by the way was a relatively small territory compared to the continent it covers today. For example Egypt wasn’t in Africa, Egypt was just Egypt.

I have a friend from Ghana recently arrived in Canada . At lunch we were talking about various holidays celebrated by different ethnic groups . "" Kwansza " came up and my friend asked what holiday that was ? I'm Slavic and I often criticize our Slavic tendency towards pathetic nationalism and exaggeration in almost every way, but when I see this other extreme that is present in the west, I am no longer sure which is worse. And I don't know why do I take it so personally about the things that are happening in England, for example, but lately I really do have a feeling that the attack on Germanic, Norse, Celtic, and even Latin culture is in some way an attack on "my" culture. My culture is primarily Slavic, but somehow it is closely related to Germanic, Latin, and even Celtic culture, so when someone outside that circle tries to diminish the value of any of them, I feel equally threatened. I think that for the first time in history we have to admit to each other that we are more similar than different, because otherwise we will all disappear, and to others we have always been the same anyway.
When you argue with them it's actually kinda funny the lengths they'll go to to back that delusion up. Everything from mistranslations, photoshopped pictures of egyptian hieroglyphs being ebony skinned, *modern* pictures of dark skinned people in these populations, etc etc. It's annoying at first but eventually you just have to laugh at the absurdity of it all.
Ignoring it seems to me to be the best way to handle these pathetic idiots. Arguing with them gives their absurdities a position of being worthy to be discussed. Instead just be proud of your heritage and your ancestors and what they created and the most important thing: tell that everywhere you stand and go. Make it public everywhere in your own life. Some years ago I remember seeing a statement made by one of these writers or producers from the BBC involved with shows like Dr. Who, where he responded to complaints about deliberate misrepresentations of ethnicity in historical depictions by claiming (and I paraphrase) that they were righting a wrong and showing how Britain should have looked all along. This struck me as an outrageous statement, as it implies for instance that medieval Europeans had some moral obligation to have sailed to darkest Africa and plucked up unsuspecting blacks from their existence there to come live among them in England or wherever. Of course the logic or ethics of this statement are never explained or questioned, it is merely a statement meant to have a manipulative psychological impact on certain members of the population.
Thank you for bringing up Tamils as an example! Some Tamils are darker than some Sub-Saharan Africans, but does that make them African? In my home town, that suggestion would probably get you a broken nose, courtesy of any member of the Tamil community. I am of North African (Algerian) descent. I am sick and tired of my ancestors’ (Berbers) history being erased by the BBC and others. Stolen in fact! Most North Africans today are Mediterranean looking, and there is a great diversity in phenotypes. I only have to look at my own family. Here in the UK most people think I am white French, until I tell them my ethnic origins. I think I would have blended in nicely in Roman Africa, which by the way was a relatively small territory compared to the continent it covers today. For example Egypt wasn’t in Africa, Egypt was just Egypt.
I am half-Moroccan Berber, half-English. Historically, the only reason that North Africans look Mediterranean is because Moors as Muslims (Arabs, Berbers, sub-Saharan Africans and their mixed offspring) settled right across Southern Europe, placing Arab-Berber-sub-Saharan African genealogical lineage into the Portuguese, Spanish, Corsicans, Sardinians, Sicilians, Italians and Maltese of today. Before Islam, there was no settlement of Arabs, Berbers or sub-Saharan Africans across the Mediterranean at this scale, so Italian Romans would have been much lighter-skinned and more European-looking than what they are now. Iberia is a slight exception because the Phoenicians and later Carthaginians colonised it before and during Roman times. Greeks look darker today than they would have been in Antiquity because the Ottoman Turks invaded and changed their genetic aesthetic too

Some years ago I remember seeing a statement made by one of these writers or producers from the BBC involved with shows like Dr. Who, where he responded to complaints about deliberate misrepresentations of ethnicity in historical depictions by claiming (and I paraphrase) that they were righting a wrong and showing how Britain should have looked all along. This struck me as an outrageous statement, as it implies for instance that medieval Europeans had some moral obligation to have sailed to darkest Africa and plucked up unsuspecting blacks from their existence there to come live among them in England or wherever. Of course the logic or ethics of this statement are never explained or questioned, it is merely a statement meant to have a manipulative psychological impact on certain members of the population.

I'm from Spain and we have this curious case of half a dozen of samurais that settled down in a town outside Seville called Coria del Río after coming to Spain with a Japanese delegation. Their descendents still bear the surname Japón, which means Japan in Spanish. For us it's a cool story, a rarity inside our country's history, a nice anecdote. I can't imagine our public TV ever trying to sell the story of Asian people were always a thing in Spain just because of that very specific (and interesting) case. That would sound ridiculous. I find it interesting that there's PLENTY of subsaharan african folklore, legends, myths, and historical figures to inspire our movies and TV today, but instead of doing this, they put their efforts into making people from other cultures black. I've had the notion they are trying to cleverly erase both cultures. They're basically saying two things: white cultures weren't really white and blacks have no cultures of their own. I'm mixed ethnicity, primarily Native American and Celtic, and if I saw King Arthur depicted as a Mohawk, this would really bother me.
