12:53 the riverdale cast recording actually had the lines “are we gonna have a problem? did zombies eat your brain? we’ve come so far why now are you yanking on my chain” not nearly as funny as the original line, but still kinda cute for cw
Probably off topic (or maybe it's not?) But I love Ryan's singing voice in the Heather's soundtrack. I love his interpretation of JD slipping into madness.
Heads up: they were doing the high school production in this episode, so that’s why they cut out a lot of stuff and why some of the lyrics are weird/changed. (Such as the “doorknob” one). Personally I think it was horrible. I would say that to improve it they shouldn’t have let certain people (*cough* KJ and Cole *cough*) sing. They used a lot of auto tune even though a lot of the cast members CAN sing well. There shouldn’t have been a musical episode anyways though tbh. You should react to the Carrie episode next.
Which is definitely weird. Can’t a CW show afford the original version? This is a show that already had sex and drugs, why couldn’t they use the original version?
@@ezelfrancisco1349 copyright laws. Plus the show is tv-14 whereas the musical is tv-ma. They can’t use certain words in tv-14 shows, so they can’t use certain lyrics that were in the original. Which is why the lyrics were changed. The high school version was the safest choice for them.
Honestly Cole Sprouse did really well considering he isn’t a singer, but yknow when I heard him sing Seventeen I honestly immediately thought of Legally Blonde Emmett and “chip on your shoulder” cause yknow what he would actually slay that. @@cosmist99 Martha is only really important cause she gives JD the photos of her and heather, in the musical shes just a mashup of Martha and Betty from the film
Cole and Dylan did sing with Disney! They did "A Dream is A Wish Your Heart Makes" with a bunch of other Disney channel stars as a part of the Disney Circle of Stars group! There were a bunch of music videos with covers of classic Disney songs back then. Dylan and Cole sang a VERY small part, but they still did it!! Good times. Absolutely LOVED hearing Cole sing in various episodes of Riverdale. Also pretty sure the cast was aware there would be singing pretty early on since there's singing in like every other episode. They do one major musical episode per season, but they have at least 1 cover song every other episode.
I was singing Big Fun with a friend and we got to when the Heathers sing about Martha and a girl came up to us and ask why we were singing RIVERDALE at that moment my friend and I almost cried in shame 😭😭
I used to be a Riverdale fan years ago when I was in school and when the heathers episode came out I can remember loving it. I was obsessed with the songs which lead me to the original which i discovered were 1000X better. I ended up going down a heathers rabbit hole and became a big fan of the musical and as much as I hate to admit it now its actually thanks to Riverdale. So try not to worry too much Ryan some good came from this!
I won't lie, the first time I actually listened to Heathers was in this episode, but it DID make me go listen to the original, and now it's one of my favorite musicals!
8:57 as someone who watched that Riverdale episode at 12 years old and then started getting into musicals and listening to the real Heathers at like 14 I have to confirm.
sorry but betty slayed vocals and cole genuinely shocked me with the ¿louder? vocals. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL. he genuinely has the potential to be a good singer. he has real talent in that area of vocals.
I was Ryan's twin in this video: never watched riverdale, cringed at the thought of the infamous Heather's episode, watching it with yall for the first time. My skin is abso6crawling, I can't!
If I had visceral reactions to the clips included in this video, I CANNOT IMAGINE Ryan's true feelings inside. The cuts in "Beautiful" made me irrationally angry. Both of your reactions were so much fun to watch!
If this is any consolation, when I was younger I was a huge fan of Riverdale and had never heard of Heathers before. When this musical episode came out (keep in mind I was a huge theatre nerd), I saw other fans recommending that we should watch the original source material too. I decided to follow their advice and it immediately became my favourite musical (to this day). In fact, I even auditioned for my first-ever community theatre musical after a few years-long struggle with major stage anxiety. I only auditioned because they were putting on Heathers and there was no way I would miss out on that, anxiety be damned. Now I will be playing Heather Duke in 5 months and am having an absolutely life-changing experience. Kinda crazy to think I owe it all to Riverdale for pointing me towards Heathers, but hey, something good had to come outta that show (no offence to avid Riverdale stans, honestly you have my respect). So, long story short, at least for me, this episode did have a positive effect! I think when watching it, it was pretty obvious that they were taking the songs out of context and applying them to their own storyline. So I knew immediately that the episode wasn't doing the musical any justice, even without having seen it myself! And honestly, it was because of that that I was more inclined to watch the og musical, rather than just taking their adaption as enough of a plot summary to excuse not watching the real thing.
Ok... But... 18:33 can we just appreciate the way he sounds so much like JD at the start of meant to be yours? I like- the way he makes the noise its just like.. Jd?
This episode of Riverdale brought me to Heathers The Musical as someone who thought they didn't even like musicals. Now it's my favorite musical and I'm obsessed with it.
which is very surprising because it’s a bit more of a musical theather geek type of musical. Very stripped down and less super out there and clear cut compared to some of the bigger musicals out there. The scene is pretty bare for most of the show and they are all imagined as it’s always the same scene with MAYBE some props. So honestly glad you liked it. The choreography though is one of my favorites
You have no idea how i felt when muy classmates would sing the "shut up Heather sorry Heather look's who's with her" part of Big Fun. And i tried to talk to them about the musical or the movie and they were like "tf you takin' about?"
While this episode was kind of confusing for me, a person who hadn’t seen heathers the movie or the musical, some of the music did stick with me, and I did end up looking up the originals. That’s how I found your channel too! One thing lead to another! I got so invested that I did go back to watch the heathers movie. So while the execution wasn’t great, I feel like the intent was there
The first time I learned about heathers was in college when my friend (vocal major) asked me (piano major) to sightread seventeen so she could sing along with piano. I am forever grateful that my introduction to heathers was from another musician LOL
I personally loved seventeen and wished they had kept it to betty and jughead, I thought that cole did a great job at those parts and as you said once he got into his range he sounded comfortable and sounded great for someone who initially didn't want to sing on the show. I am curious what you would have thought of dead girl walking as you have performed it yourself as well, but it was interesting to see your reactions. I was a fan of heathers before riverdale and this episode was quite an experience for me to watch.
Also, can we acknowledge how well they cast Jughead as JD in this episode? Like, personality wise from just watching this one video omg they have so many similar mannerisms and I could totally see Jughead having some of these rants 🤣
I feel like we need a reaction to another musical episode that Sam and Ryan like, but aren't as attached to. Then Ryan will be more able to judge what he thinks about the musical episodes as a concept.
9:05 - I love musical theater so so much, and one of the things I love about it so much is also what usually TV producers don't understand about it - which is that _the music is intrinsic to the plot_ . Arguably the show that started this trend in TV series of doing a musical episode is Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which would be awesome if you guys reacted to - Except, if you don't know what's going in the 5 seasons of the show that came before that episode - you won't actually get the nuances and the points of the plot being explored in the music (and yes, they composed the music specifically for that episode, not a jukebox). But _that's_ why it was so awesome and did so well it spawned a following, even to this day. They understood what a musical is and how it can serve the story, not went out looking for a cheap way to boost ratings.
as an european, i dont have a really big source of musical theater knowledge. mamma mia, annie and into the woods were always my favourite movies since i was 7, but i dont think i even knew there were musicals on stage. i was somewhat little when i watched this and it not only chocked the bejesus out of me how good cole sounded, it opened me to the world of stage musicals and its safe to say i fell deep deep down the rabbit hole. now, i went to nyc, got my first playbill and watched pretty much every single musical movie and listen to all the soundtracks of all the broadway musicals (available on spotify LMAOOO) i can find. i wrote, produced and co-directed 2 musicals (+ in the making) and ii still have a long way to go. after watching this (and the other riverdale adaptations of musicals), i actually searched for the originals, fell more in love with them, and even got exposed to more musicals that the actors/producers/writers in that production were in. i dont wanna sound too dramatic but this probably changed my life. and maybe it wouldnt have happened if you didnt make the OG JD come to life. so thank u. so so much.
As a longtime theatre kid myself, I honestly enjoyed your critical feedback on it even if you are seeing things through roasted glasses. Now... You should show him the other musical episodes so that he can critique them all or judge them. As much as I want him to jump into Hedwig.. take mercy on him 😆

Yeah nearly halfway into the video they get to what the videos about lol
thanks bro
Honestly in some parts Cole wasn't that bad
They have a Carrie musical?!?!?
@@Rhedd30 yes.. you didn't know?
Ryan's face when Cole sprouse started singing is priceless
ryan slayed as JD. Hes my favourite one! the vocals i wish i saw him.
I truly wasn't expecting this to ever happen 💀💀
Honestly Cole Sprouse did really well considering he isn’t a singer, but yknow when I heard him sing Seventeen I honestly immediately thought of Legally Blonde Emmett and “chip on your shoulder” cause yknow what he would actually slay that. If Riverdale is gonna continue to exists (I’ve lost track now) I want a legally blonde episode lol
Not my favourite musical, please no. This is nightmare fuel.
(I'm kidding lol but I really don't want them messing up LB...)
@@itzelwisteria1819 ahahah yeah we can’t let them get their hands on it, maybe I just want Cole sprouse to sing chip on your should
no no cole and chip on your shoulder would slay actually
him saying just not today really sold the deal on him being a good singer huh
@@satanlovesu listen he’s not a singer like that’s not his job but I’ve always thought of the character of Emmett not being an all around singer one and more that style of singing yknow the tone of voice
They did Carrie the Musical also on Riverdale and I think they did it better than they did Heathers. That's actually what introduced me to Carrie the Musical and made me listen to the original soundtrack so maybe it's working to get people liking theater more than we think
I thought the Carrie: The Musical episode was better too.
i like the way they did carrie, because they actually intertwined it with the story
sameee
i'm sad to say that's how i got introduced to Carrie.
the riverdale made me watch heathers so
20:21” the oRIGINAL SOURCE MATERIAL” did anyone else hear that in Alex Brightmans voice 😭
I love how traumatized Ryan looked
Also I’m a super big fan of heathers! I really admire your work Ryan.
I was very sad Martha wasn’t even in the episode. I played Martha in Heathers and I feel like she’s very integral to the plot lol
YOU DID WHAT.
@@TalkingCactus. Probably talking about like a small play?? But it would be awesome if it was genuine
I LOVE MARTHA
@@cosmist99 Martha is only really important cause she gives JD the photos of her and heather, in the musical shes just a mashup of Martha and Betty from the film
I love Ryan retreating into his sweater like a turtle like I feel you some of this is atrocious
we NEED a part 2 where he reacts to the rest of the songs
SAME
pls no, big fun heathers version gives me physical pain
He doesn’t need to see the whole pain /hj
He would literally melt into the chair if he saw dead girl walking
I was singing Big Fun with a friend and we got to when the Heathers sing about Martha and a girl came up to us and ask why we were singing RIVERDALE at that moment my friend and I almost cried in shame 😭😭
i feel Ryan's pain and frustration and it is so entertaining
I used to be a Riverdale fan years ago when I was in school and when the heathers episode came out I can remember loving it. I was obsessed with the songs which lead me to the original which i discovered were 1000X better. I ended up going down a heathers rabbit hole and became a big fan of the musical and as much as I hate to admit it now its actually thanks to Riverdale. So try not to worry too much Ryan some good came from this!
Same dude 😭💀
same!!!
this is what happened with me too. but let’s not be so mean to riverdale
i love how ryan is so enthusiastic about the sponsorship aaa
I won't lie, the first time I actually listened to Heathers was in this episode, but it DID make me go listen to the original, and now it's one of my favorite musicals!
8:57 as someone who watched that Riverdale episode at 12 years old and then started getting into musicals and listening to the real Heathers at like 14 I have to confirm.
Im living for Ryan{s saltiness it's everything
I know right?!
Guys honestly you’re so brave for doing this ily
Ok why was the paid promotion part so entertaining?? Sam and Ryan are just o funny that they can make anything highly entertaining
Cuz they were more transparent about it than other creators
i was watching this with my friend and she was like "OMG THATS THE GUY FROM LIV AND MADDIE" 💀
😭
Yeaaaaaa😭🥺🥺🥺☹️☹️
I knew I recognized him
Ryan hiding in his sweater for basically the entire video was such a mood!😅
sorry but betty slayed vocals and cole genuinely shocked me with the ¿louder?
You’ll be surprised to know that Riverdale isn’t the worst thing that happened to Heathers.
@@ezelfrancisco1349 please elaborate
@@mashal7965 I think the terrible heathers TV reboot
If I had visceral reactions to the clips included in this video, I CANNOT IMAGINE Ryan's true feelings inside. The cuts in "Beautiful" made me irrationally angry. Both of your reactions were so much fun to watch!
I was a huge Buffy the Vampire fan and their musical episode was a classic.
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend was one big musical series.
Now we just need Christy Altomare and Derek Klena to watch the episode of Riverdal where they sing songs from Carrie The Musical
Yess
Ryan’s reactions have me dying 😂😂😂😂
Ok... But... 18:33 can we just appreciate the way he sounds so much like JD at the start of meant to be yours? I like- the way he makes the noise its just like.. Jd?
I just love how Sams smiling through it all and Ryan is just dying inside
riverdale heathers was my first exposure to the heathers musical, but it got me to watch heathers and now it’s my favourite musical !!
ryan just looking absolutely dead inside by the end just kills me
Haha Ryan hiding in his sweater during 17😂
This episode of Riverdale brought me to Heathers The Musical as someone who thought they didn't even like musicals.
The hiding in the shirt during Seventeen made me crack up😂 19:20
You have no idea how i felt when muy classmates would sing the "shut up Heather sorry Heather look's who's with her" part of Big Fun.
So while the execution wasn’t great, I feel like the intent was there
I didn't even know he was in Heathers the Musical.. i only knew him from Liv and Maddie
@@ross9944 he was in liv and maddie??
I think I got reverse chills when the riff of candy store happened 😵💫
Also, can we acknowledge how well they cast Jughead as JD in this episode? Like, personality wise from just watching this one video omg they have so many similar mannerisms and I could totally see Jughead having some of these rants 🤣
Ryan hugging his seat for comfort 💀💀💀
I feel like we need a reaction to another musical episode that Sam and Ryan like, but aren't as attached to. Then Ryan will be more able to judge what he thinks about the musical episodes as a concept.
As someone who has been in two productions of Heathers (OG & West End) this was an experience XD
Barely gets into the episode:
Song: *skips around*
Ryan: *immediately takes glasses off and slowly dies inside*
Ryan having an existential crisis over Jughead’s hat is a god damn mood
