Poor Fan Man-yee, she never deserved to have any of that horrible stuff happen to her, she just really couldn't catch a break. And the saddest part is that the Hello Kitty Murder has some sad similarities to Junko Furuta's case, which is absolutely disgusting and heartbreaking as well.

Fun little fact about folk creatures like the Kappa, they were created to teach kids values and warn them from doing dangerous things. In the case of the Kappa it's a cautionary tale to keep away from flowing rivers and teaches kids manners through the bowing.
Yeah that's the same with a lot of legends, they're often like horror stories for kids where they teach morals or lessons... usually into scaring those children into acting right lol
The legend also goes that Kappa are the result of children who were abandoned in rivers. When food was scarce and families didn't have enough to take care of a new baby, they would send it down a river to drown. So Kappas are believed to be those children turned into human-like turtle creatures.
I remember watching the story of the Oily man on the show called Incredible tales. And also my dad asking what if it comes into our house, what would I do, and 10 yo me just casually said to set it on fire because I know oil is flammable
For something called the "Grizzliest" Asian Horror Stories, there's a stunning lack of bears! ;) (Hope you know I'm just teasing. Great video, Fox! Thank you for the entertainment!)
There are bear related incidents in Japan, like the super grisly Sankebetsu Bear incident (the one thing that inspired Silver Fang and its follow ups) and various others. I think European Brown Bears and Canadian Grizzly Bears currently still have a (considerably) more positive reception overall than their mobster Ussuri counterparts (which also include the endangered but still super dangerous Hokkaido brown bears, who still belong to the Ussuri subspecies but are insular examples on their own).
Oh yeah, the Hello Kitty case from HK, it even become a sleazy "CAT3" movie called "There is something in my soup" 人頭豆腐湯 "Human head tofu soup" (Category 3 basically for 18 year old due to violence and nudity rating). That case really enraged alot of people in Hong Kong where that poor girl was tortured until she dies. So far the perps are still in jail I heard or at least the head of the trio. By the way, it says that her ghost actually haunted the trio (plus one of their girlfriend) who tortured her, her ghost haunted them until the girl went to confess to the police where the cops came to arrest them. To put a closure, that apartment had to have an exorcist to come and calm her ghost so that her ghost can peacefully pass on to the next life.

Yes, that is one of the theories. (Though Japanese salamanders are said hardly to grow over 150cm, and average length is around 50 to 70cm.) The popular theories about Kappa's reality are the drowned people (the green-tinged skin, sagging body and the bold tophead which was scraped by the stones at the bottom of the rivers), and the dead bodies of babies left on the riverside.

Heya I'm from Vietnam where the story of Hui Bi Hua's daughter was originally from, there are a lot of tales about her but in reality, she just didn't pass away in the mansion that is shown in the video that is rumored to be haunted by her ghost. I'm not sure for how long but she moved to another mansion in a different town near the beach called Long Hai, that's where she passed away I believed. The mansion in Long Hai is abandoned after she's gone, but it still existed nowadays.

It just so fascinating hearing stories from different countries and there's many that never make it outside either due to translation or being simply lost to time. Now of course some of these stories are downright tragic but still interesting to hear the stories that make it out of the country.
as Indonesian, I am pretty familiar with the Story of Si Manis Jembatan Ancol, the sweet girl from Ancol Bridge, as well as Kuntilanak. both have been depicted in movies several times as well as tv series. while Si Manis Jembatan Ancol often shown as a girl in red kebaya and sarong with red scarf around her head, Kuntilanak is more or less looking like Sadako from The Grudge. a little correction though, Kuntilanak (at least in area where I am living) is a female ghost who was killed after being raped while the pregnant woman ghost is known as sundelbolong, its the same white dressed female ghost but it has hole on her back which reeks like a rotten meat. there's another one called wewe gombel, this one female ghost is known to have habit of kidnapping children who are still wandering after dusk (a time after sunset where the sky is still reddish) she hid the child under her dangling bosom and often breastfed the child as the ghost said to be a woman who lost her baby or her baby was stolen and she died in despair because of the grief.
As recently as roughly ONE WEEK FROM THIS COMMENT IM POSTING, one of the 3 men in the Hello Kitty Murder returned to prison for a year for an "indecent assault" of a teenage Japanese girl. Crazy. It was Shing-cho, & he has been free since 2011 when he was released for an appeal after serving 18 years for Fan's death.
