      LOL saame, my PT said he thinks I’m hypermobile throughout my entire body, and that’s half of why I have spine issues too! I have lumbar spine retrolisthesis (idk if I spelled that correctly), and according to my PT, “significant lordosis” among other issues. And oh the muscle tightness and pain......

  • @denissefigueroa5163

    I’m not “flexible”. In fact, I have really rigid muscles. So it was a surprise to know I’m hyper mobile.
    Funny to know that all my muscles aches, mobility restrictions and inability to stretch came from my ligaments not being able to properly function and my muscles doing most of the work, as my doctor said (and depression). He was amazed lol 😂
    Several therapy sessions later, I’m stretchy stretchy.

    • @oldvlognewtricks
      @oldvlognewtricks ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Also worth noting that depression and anxiety (and several other conditions) are highly positively correlated with hypermobility, so the causality could run the other way.

    For everybody scoring 8-9 and now off to become contortionists, please be careful. The reason why you can easily do this can be because your joints or connective tissues are more fragile than other people's - it also means things can dislocate or break a lot easier. So please see a physio or doctor for a proper assessment and diagnosis first.

    I took a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Class for 3 months. Once, another woman had me in an armlock (armstretching to the point it hurts so much you have to give up), and she was extremely confused as to why I didn't give up, although she had my arm in a pretty abnormal position. Well, the reason is my elbows are hypermobile😏
    I used my elbows to not have to play volleyball at school. Okay, one technique did kinda hurt in my elbows, so it's probably for the best if I don't play it. Apart from that I don't have any problems, even though I have a slight hypermobility in several joints. Especially in my elbows and knees.
    But how does the "touching the floor" thing relate to hypermobility? Everyone can learn that. I can do it easily, but before I started stretching, my hands were a foot above the floor in forward fall.

    • @Yabas00

      @@Yabas00 Well, the woman was shocked and told me that if I didn't give up when someone did this, they will end up hurting my arm. But I only took this class for 3 months and never went back, so idk😅

    • @AnneLund80
      @AnneLund80 ปีที่แล้ว

      The touching the floor test is for people to do before they’ve warmed up and stretched. If you’re not warmed up and stretched out you usually can’t touch the floor. So if you can touch the floor with flat palms before stretching out you’re hips are hyper mobile. And not everyone can touch the floor before warming up and stretching. Some people can barely reach passed their knees. They are immobile which also causes joint issues.

    • @oldvlognewtricks
      @oldvlognewtricks ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AnneLund80 The trouble with this part of the test is it is very reliant on hamstring extensibility, and less-so on joint laxity. Particularly in older, sedentary, or injured people this factor is not well-correlated with hypermobility… rather flexibility or the amount they stretch.

  • @MrsInAbox
    @MrsInAbox 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Thanks so much for posting this! Curious though, the tests were all done with passive movement, i.e. having someone move them for you. I personally test negative on passive, but can actively move them myself beyond 15· ROM fort the major joints, and beyond 100· for pinky fingers.

    • @Physiotutors
      @Physiotutors  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's decribed as a passive assessment, which usually achieves more ROM than during active ROM.
      Taking your other hand to move your joints is basically the same as PROM already, if you meant that.

I don't think it is necessary a good thing because at 40, i have been getting so many injuries while doing yoga and working out. I don't realize that I have gone too far until the next day. Hello Physiotutors,
    Is there a article that studied the cut-off level for generalized joint hyper mobility in adults between 20-50 years old? Most articles tested the cut-off with children.
    Good informational video's
    Thanks :)

    • @Physiotutors
      @Physiotutors  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      In the original article, Beighton et al ( www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1006136/pdf/annrheumd00017-0018.pdf ) describe mobility scores for different age groups. The study was conducted in the african population so there might be limitations in cross-cultural validity for these cut-off scores.
      a recent australian study recommends: A cut-off of ⩾4 was only found to be appropriate for females aged 40-59 years and males aged 8-39 years ( www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28340003 )

    My story is long:
    I have my hyper mobility joint syndrome diagnosed by a professional.
    My symptoms were ignored by my pediatrician for years. My right femur can dislocate if I move it a certain way, and would do it on its own if my snow crippled wrong. It was so painful. He had one hand on my hip to feel the joint and one on my knee, making my leg extend and twist only to tell me "it's your knee popping, you're fine." I could feel the bone pop out on the inside of my hip joint.
    My foot arches had falled flat and the muscles would seize due to the loose ligaments and growing. They still do, but only when I over do it with walks. My ankles would cripple dozens of times a day, falling and giving out and making me trip. They would bend at a near 90 degree angle. And that hurt so bad. It made me fall down star cases all the time.
    It was ignored, so I learned to work with it and catch myself.
    I almost broke my thumb as a young child, but my ligaments we're to flexible that instead the joint is permanently hyper extended when I make a thumbs up. Doesn't hurt though. And my right shoulder grinds. It thunks, it grinds, it cracks and pops and shifts inside if I move it in any way other than slow perfect circles, and that one still hurts.
    But, at 15, I was diagnosed. The pain was getting worse and I had fallen down a massive staircase at my school, badly bruising my shin. Nothing broken, but the problem was getting worse. So we sought help. With tests and explanations at a children's hospital, I got x rays for my shoulder and walking tests for my ankles.
    Being diagnosed made me cry with relief. Finally having an answer after being told nothing was different, that I was imagining these things was such a wonderful feeling.
    On a happy note, I was in physical therapy and I'm going to be staying up my exercises again. On and off for the rest of my life's i don't mind. I like my flexibility. It's nice to have an answer.
    And a funny note: I had a chiropractor with my first round of physical therapy as a child. And he was my mom's too (how we knew him). She is naturally just flexible. But I am far more bendy. So I ended up startling my doctor, haha. It took him two visits to guage how far I can bend so that he could adjust properly. I find it funny that me just being naturally me scared my doctor on the first visit.
    For those who have hyper mobility joint syndrome and feel nervous or ashamed, I know the feeling and I promise there is nothing wrong with you. You are not broken, you are not faulty. You are you, you are perfect, and all you need is a little help to figure out your own body.

    I scored 8 out of 9. It's never been an issue before, but due to recent changes, I'm beginning to get some joint pain in my knees. Would taking something like glucosamin help or is that only if there's deterioration of the joints? Maybe exercises to strengthen the knees?

    • @Physiotutors
      @Physiotutors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We'd suggest to see a local physio if instability is an issue.
      Glucosamin won't help, exercise will.

    The Beighton score is a not a good test in the hands of a doctor, who doesn’t take into account joint damage, that prevents you from being able to go past the necessary degrees.
    If you have bad joints and you don’t score high enough, even though you do have HEDS, you may get misdiagnosed.

      The test is about general hypermobility. It could very well be that you back is extremely mobile, while in general you are not hypermobile. That's a rather good thing though to score low, as hypermobile people have a higher chance of experiencing musculoskeletal problems in the course of their lives.
