Yup, I agree. Hozier can actually sing very high. He can even go very low then very high in one song, like "Take me to Church". But I like that he doesn't do vocal gymnastics just to show off. He instead does what the song needs to convey. Is he a baritone though? His speaking voice isn't very low. But what do I know? I'm not an expert.

The "roles" of voices are very loosely defined. From my understanding, it's mostly about the low to average point of your singing voice, AKA your gut/chest voice. We mostly speak in the upper range of this (I'm a bari-tenor and usually speak in upper tenor), and when I went to his last tour his voice sounded light but had distinct depth.
I'd say he definitely is comfortable in that low range, he's just very skilled with using falsetto to nail those high parts.
Fun fact: We all have what's called a passaggio, which is essentially your throat voice. It's a trouble spot (usually about 2 or 3 notes) that's hard to hold a consistent tone through. The range varies depending on your natural range and how well trained you are. If you notice, Hozier tends to avoid the upper tenor range, opting to jump straight into treble clef and I suspect it's likely for this reason.

Now that he has more experience as a singer (the Cherry Wine video is 4 years old), his voice sounds way more consistent through his whole vocal range. He transitions from head voice to falsetto around B4-C5, so he could be considered a tenor by some.

@@romicor9 but hes still naturally a baritone. A baritone just means his lower voice resonates. In tenors like I am my lower singing voice is not as powerful and cant resonate like a baritone

@@ishthefish9006 I concur. That's why I said "by some". I gave my point of view at a popular vocal profile/range page and they removed the word "Tenor" and left the classification empty, which I think was wise since voices like his are the ones who originated the slang term "baritenor". Pigeonholing them is kind of pointless.

@@romicor9 true, most baritone can reach tenor unlike vice versa most tenors cant sing in baritone. I find it hard along with some others in my class

Like how you give low range singers their props...everyone can' t hit those high notes but it does not mean that they can't deliver a performance w/ passion, soul, & beauty to enthrall their audience.

Yeah hozier is great, he can hit high notes when he wants to, but high notes don’t fit his style very well, his songs are soft and charming, high notes, especially belty ones would be too harsh

Very interesting points. I wonder about the part about the baritone warmth and depth. Can you explain that some more please? What kind of songs is this more noticeable in? What songs are better or worse for a baritone or a tenor?
I’m asking because I don’t really know what types of songs that best suit my voice. I have found some that I like how my voice works with, but I just can’t place what it is about them. I’m a bass/baritone. Pretty good range, but much fuller at the lower end.

This is an awesome video, yours and his. I feel this Bringing the point home of working with what you have. So many struggling vocalists set the mark so high for themselves. If they would just find the "real" voice within and sing in comfort everything would work out. Look at Johnny Cash! !

    • @billiey36
      @billiey36 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

And a lot of singers damage their voices with all the vocal gymnastics they do for no other reason then to show off their range. Just interpret the song. We'll notice if you can sing or not!

Your opening had me immediately dislike you, and i'm going to tell you why.
From the jump you pronounced the subject matter's name wrong.
"To get singing knowledge you'll get nowhere else" Not exactly young man.
Your approach is backward. We're here to watch you, a fan like us, react to an incredibly talented vocal artist.
YOU are not YOUrself the incredibly talented vocal artist.
You've got to assess how self centered your video is coming across.
