SOS is one of our family's favorite breakfasts, but it's not inexpensive any more. Dried beef is VERY pricey.

Mayo Cake may sound weird to people, but mayonnaise is already made of egg, oil, and some other ingredients, so it was a natural replacement for an egg and butter/oil like we do with packaged cake mixes. With the other ingredients in mayonnaise, it actually turns out a very moist cake with a little bit of extra flavor or tang.

oh wow that's interesting. When I was a kid, my dad taught me how to make SOS and told me his family had to eat that in the 30's cos they were broke. Didn't know it was a "thing" back then! I'm a vegetarian and I like to make morningstar bacon SOS!

I hate that I'm swayed to actually try peanut butter onion. LOL

Mayo went from $.99 a jar to $7.99…..
Not certain it makes sense now, sadly😢

Peanut butter and pickle sandwiches were a stable during my childhood. Still very yummy!

My mom, a depression kid, liked sandwiches made with leftover baked beans and onions or a fried egg with onions. Actually a pretty tasty alternative for meat.when I was a kid ring baloney was cheap and she would make a potato soup with it adding drop noodles. We loved it! She made an alternate style with cabbage and milk. I still make these cheap food hacks because they are delicious ❤
I almost forgot meatloaf-the sandwiches are better than lunch meat which is atrociously priced!

I make SOS occasionally but I use Buddig roast beef instead of dried beef.

Mexican Cornbread. Put in some creamed corn, put down a layer and top with jalapenos and cheese. Repeat and pour some charro beans on top and you have a cheap, healthy great meal!
