    This closet definitely brought back some memories because there were so many things in here that I haven’t seen in YEARS! And I think it’s time to put some of these items into storage because an entry closet is honestly precious real estate, it should be used for items that you are using daily...so I wanted to sort this all out and create some space saving DIY storage solutions to make it easy for my parents to find everything they need quickly.

    Did you just paint over cedar? You put that in closets because moths don't like the wood and it saves your clothes from getting holes in it.

    Hey Tina! It would be fun to see the consultation/problem solving/design session with your parents - how they use the space and their ideas (and of course have you work your magic!). Also will you re-visit the transformed spaces in the near future to follow-up on what your parents truly like/love and maybe something they'd want to further tweak?

  • @haileycohen8180

    This turned out so cute and functional! The lights where the shoes were was such a nice touch. I just know that was so satisfying transforming a space you've seen disorganized for so long. Also, I'm scared to know how many more shoes your family has if this is how many they kept in the entryway closet😂

    Everyone always has something to say when someone paints over cedar. A few things: a) I've never seen a moth in my house lol, perhaps they aren't an issue where Tina lives and b) Moths only eat animal fibers like wool, fur, silk and leather. I didn't see any of that in their closet and I would assume Tina's parents probably have faux versions of these fabrics anyway (an assumption because they have SO much stuff, to have that amount luxury items would be absurdly expensive and I doubt they'd keep them in the front hallway closet if so...) Tina painting her parents' cedar closet literally does not impact you whatsoever. Give it a rest.

    Tina honey, during your several renovations, I can’t believe your not aware of the wonderful and useful properties of cedar paneling. It’s the perfect material for closets, it repels insects, come on, have a little respect for it. As deep as those bottom shelves are, wouldn’t it be possible to store shoes heal to toe, rather than side by side? This would double the storage space.

    • @abigailwright9199
      @abigailwright9199 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I came here to say this. I saw the cedar paneling and my heart sank. I just knew she was gonna paint over it and alas I was right. Finding a cedar closet is such a treasure and then seeing all that amazing material disappear under paint…😢

  • @hannahl610
    @hannahl610 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My hack if you’re short is to make the bottom shelves not so deep (say only the depth of one shoe) then you can stand further into the closet to reach stuff 😅 You’ll never want to keep stuff on the back of those shelves anyway as it’s too hidden

    Am I the only one who yelled, "Noooooo, that is a cedar closet, to protect all the clothes?" Cedar keeps moths and other insects from destroying your clothes and shoes. People still pay big money to have their closets lined with cedar.
    It's beautiful, but a little heartbreaking as well.

    • @teresawilliams1201
      @teresawilliams1201 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unless the cedar boards are maintained by oiling/sanding/etc every few years, they loose most of their effectiveness in 3 to 7 years

    • @beckymcdonald8040
      @beckymcdonald8040 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @teresawilliams1201 I know, that's why I got excited, when I saw her sanding, but then realized she was sanding woodfiller.
      Don't get me wrong, it is beautiful, she did a great job. It's just that I'm a woodworker. Lol Honestly, it is lighter, brighter, and I am sure, fits her parents needs. That is the most important thing. I just cringe when I see certain woods getting painted, ie., oak, ebony, cedar, etc.

    Hi Tina. Seeing your parents house bits reminds me of my parents. There is a tendency to hoard everything in Asian and South Asian households (Indian). I wonder if you ask them to declutter and clear out unused items? As in the bedrooms too. ALL that stuff would not fit back after your makeover. Just a very functional problem with DIYs and wanted to know what you do, behind camera

    Most likely the wood in the closets was cedar. To keep the moths away! I had some in my master closet when we moved it. It had long outlived its usefulness so I painted mine too. It's amazing how a little paint and wood can change a space into a useful and pleasant place. GREAT job!!

    FYI you don’t need to use anchors when screwing into wood, and it actually is less effective when you use anchors in wood. Wood can hold the threads of screws because they bite into it without crumbling it. Anchors are for materials that can crumble like drywall, brick, cement, etc.

    I think that wood may have been cedar. Cedar closet back then were made so that moths would not eat through people's clothes and coats. Especially expensive for coats or any expensive coats for that matter. They were the better alternative as opposed to people using mothballs.

  • @vruth23
    @vruth23 ปีที่แล้ว

    That wood is probably cedar, which is a natural wool-moth repellant. But when it is painted it is no longer a repellant. Paint seals off the natural oil scent that moths hate.

  • @jessioliver16
    @jessioliver16 ปีที่แล้ว

    The wood in that closet looked like cedar. People line their closets in that to prevent insects that would eat their clothes like moths. It also absorbs moisture. Whoever built your parents home was a genius! Great find.

    Great job, as always! And I really like the white look, it’s bright and timeless too. And not that my opinion matters much, but maybe a little skinny table or floating table over the shoes In the entry would help to distract from the 100 pairs of shoes lol (no offense truly!) just seems to be way to much shoes. I would have made way less shoe storage there so that they would be forced to put shoes in bedrooms where they go. Idk just a thought
