*Worked perfectly right out of the box **MyBest.Tools** a nice compact bench bandsaw, that will work with 1/4 to 1/2 inch blades! First use was a joy, better quality than I expected for the price ! ! !*
Just got a 16" Laguna free! The motor is burned up. I plan to put another 5hp motor in and can do what you guys are doing...I'm excited! Thanks for the details on how to set it up etc. Very helpful!
I use a 14" with riser block powered by a 3/4 hp motor to resaw . I just did a 12" mesquite log with no problem, the key is proper setup. I use the starrett blades at $12.00 a piece
Thanks mate, much appreciated. I ended up getting a 1 HP as 1/5 was out of mty price range, but hadn't decided whether to get the riser kit to cut 7-8" or just to stick with three piece backs. I may get the riser block now as I've had good success cutting up to 6" Cocobolo with the tips from this vid on set up plus the right blade. :)
That was fast! Many thanks, I am looking for a used bandsaw capable of cutting backs/sides but budget and availability are an issue (many of the major brands are not available in Canada) so it is a big help :D
A.L. Murkar, that's about what I use, and it works. Highland Hardware's Woodslicer blade cuts a pretty narrow kerf, and that helps with the horsepower.
What would be an ideal throat height of a bandsaw for guitar making? In particular, I want to resaw wood for both the soundboard and back. I'm looking to get a bandsaw that I'll use "forever" but I don't want to purchase something that's more than what I will use. [Edit] -> I'm thinking for acoustic guitars.
Usually just a benchtop model will work for lutherie. Make sure it has about a 4 inch height clearance for cutting things like scarf joints. It will not work for resawing back, sides and tops. You will need a bigger saw for that. Usually about 8 inches for cutting height will work though.
I have a question, relative to the last piece of wood he cut at the end on the small bandsaw, he said he have a little twist on it, i do have a piece of bird's eyes maple, i want to cut the fingerboard out of it, make the truss routing and reglue the piece back, but i have a very very very light twist, maybe twist is like 0.3mm (sorry no inch i'm french) i can barely put a visit card under it. So is it possible to resaw it in that state?
Hi Rob, I'm doing your online electric guitar course. I'm starting to buy some tools and I want to know if a workbench band saw, or a small one (like 7-8 cm cut) suffices for that. I'm not doing any re-saw, I'm buying the wood blanks from tonewood shops. The band saw will basically be used for cutting the body and neck shape. Um abraço
Andrés, thanks for taking my online course. I hope you are enjoying the videos. Yes, a small bench top bandsaw will work but I recommend one that is a good quality saw. Some of them are junk. Boa sorte.
Hello, I have just been training as a luthier and I have built my first electric guitar. I want to be able to have a few machines for guitar making at home. can you suggest a few decent band saws that a beginner luthier on a budget might be able to purchase? and can you tell me what type of height I should be looking for if I want to cut my own tops for electric guitars and basses?
Sorry for the delay. I was doing some teaching in Brazil. For resawing guitar tops you need a little larger saw than a benchtop model. The Rikon 14 inch saw has gotten great reviews as well as the newer 14 inch Laguna.

The bast video I found about this subject, Thanks for sharing!
Thank you. Glad you found it useful.

For this work a small bench top model would work. If you want to use it for scarf joints make sure it can cut a height of 3.5 to 4 inches.

keep the vids coming. making a guitar with an armrest, and an acoustic with a pickup and built in tuner vid would be AMAZING!
never seen koa with sapwood. looks cool

Is that a Bridge City combination square I see? looks like someone could be using the $100 bill to set up their bandsaw.
Do you think a 1 HP bandsaw with a riser block would be sufficient for occasional resawing of 7.5-8" material for guitar backs?

I think that would be a little underpowered. Bigger is better when it c omes to resawing!
Thanks O'Brien!!!, but this is using bimetallic.
Do not recommend videos to me, TH-cam!!!
