I just put kerfing on rims for the very first time. I used the reverse style and followed your instructions exactly. It worked perfectly, wetting it and clamping to the outside was the tip I needed. Thanks!
@searchybay Thans for watch ing the videos. I am glad you are enjoying them. My advice on the ovation is to pitch it and start from scratch. Happy Building!
@themurkar Thanks for the compliment. The wood need not be quartersawn in order to be bookmatched. In fact for a solid body guitar there are times when wood that is flat or rift sawn will give you more figure in the grain and this could be more desirable visually.
I enjoy the term "high tech glue spreading device" :D This video series is absolutely amazing! I'll be starting my d.i.y. project of building my own bass guitar soon :)
What happens if a small gap does occur between the kerfing and the guitar side? Im guessing i can fill it in with some sawdust, but is it a huge problem if there is a very small gap in a couple areas?
I use spanish cedar reverse kerfing, and it always cracks and breaks when i get to the waist and upper bout. I've looked at Taylors and Martins with it and there's is flawless. any suggestions other than spraying it with water
I use either cedro or mahogany. Spruce is also nice. It doesn't necessarily have to be quartersawn. Experiment a bit and find the best cut that works for you.
Is kerfed material strictly necessary or can a suitably profiled solid strip be pre-formed at the bending iron? Thanks Robert for this and all of your other excellent videos 👌 Ger
Rob Ive had problems with the standard LMI kerfing, seems it may be cut to deep and on archtop tight curves it always breaks or splits.Ive soaked some to see if that helps ,but now I have to dry clamp to let it dry, then glue. Also do I really need the side bracing strips ??? would reverse kerfing bend without breaking on archtop tight radiuss??? thanks
Reverse kerfing breaks too and looks really bad as you now see a gap where the break is. Standard kering can be pieced together without this issue. Both have their pros and cons.
Thanks for the excellent videos..any chance you could take a look at my ovation video...any bit of advice would a blessing..Iv'e worked with wood for a long time in many applications,,,but have only fixed a few guitars
Does StewMac sell this "Whoop Ass"? Luthier Mercantile? Seriously, if using non-reverse kerfing and you break it in a tight spot in a venetian cutaway, do you need to do it over and waste the piece?

@Thejwgrant I have never experienced adhesion problems using Spanish Cedar. I guess there is always a first time though.

@angelcitymusic Thanks! I prefer cedar or mahogany for kerfing
what is the dimension of the thickness and width of the kerfing ?

What or who is the jam at 5:20 ? Just badass , and a great video too . lol
@sirgreggins8824 Get it wet and clamp it to the oustide of the rims until it dries. This helps pre-shape the kerfing before installing it.
very funny, yet informative. need to get my hands on that whoop ass. can come in handy

Great video, as always!! I have a couple of questions though.. Which wood do you usually use for kerfing? Does it have to be quartersawn? thank you!

+g00167015 You do not have to use kerfed linings. The old masters did not in fact. They used solid linings.

Sounds like Joe Robinson on the background music. . . good choice.
You are correct. It even says it is him at the end of the video.

for normal kerfing, non reverse, you can just piece it together if it breaks.
