Kimberly Czar of Czar Designs in back in the Living Felt studio! While filming her upcoming course for FeltingTutorials.com, Marie and Kimberly discussed the importance of density and firmness in Sculptural Needle Felting. We thought it would be nice to pause and capture some of the insight into why and when something should be needle felted FIRM. Marie and Kimberly review some examples of firmly felted sculptures, and demonstrate how to get started building up a firm core shape - both round and long! We'll finish off with a few ways to measure the firmness of your felt.
Kimberly's new course "Extreme Faces" opens on September 1st, 2023, but it is available for Early Bird enrollment now on FeltingTutorials.com! feltingtutorials.com/course/e...

I can't stop giggling. Seriously. Long day at work. Came home, pulled dinner together and was thinking about some projects i need to finish soon. One of them is another elf. Turned on the TV, pulled up TH-cam and POOF. The first suggestion was this video with Kim & Marie. That's magic. I watched nearly every video on the channel, taken several courses and read a bunch of books. Yet I can still pick up new tips from LF videos. The pounds of pressure measure is awesome and will be my new test for the next project I create. Thanks!
Thanks Marie and Kimberly. Its always good to review the basics. I think it will help my projects. Very excited for Kim drug
Kimberly's new class !
great class...thanks for all the tips...the new class looks exciting.
thank you for sharing your tips.Always pick up something new
Had to miss the live, but at least I caught the recap. Thanks for sharing all the great tips!
Great tips today, I learned quit a bit, thank you for sharing
I loved everything about today’s show! Reminiscent of the old Wolly Wednesday format, which I truly miss. The new format is great in the sense that you can get through more in a short time, but it’s just not as personal. Marie, I know you always struggle with remembering concave vs. convex. A simple way to remember which is which is to remember that concave goes inward like you would go into a cave. Can’t wait to take Kimberly’s class!❤
Oh, this video is SOOO appreciated!!!! Thank you!
Great show! I love seeing how people use different techniques. I am so looking forward to Kimberly's new class.
Beautiful work and awesome tips!
Great info, thank you so much and "hopping" to see a tutorial on froggies!
Thanks for another informative and outstanding show 👌❣️
Love this video. So helpful. I always wondered why some of my pieces were still a bit squishy and not firm. Thank u for all your tutorials.
loved learning new ways to add to those I already use. Great show. Loved your Busy Elves tutorial Kimberly. It was such a fund course.
I love Kimberly’s work. My friend has one of her faces and it is wonderful.
Absolutely love that Moon!!! Would love to see that one being made!!!❤
Will definitely be taking Kimberly's new class! Loving the adorable examples she brought for inspiration. Firm needle felting is my go to stress relief since Covid, inspired originally by Marie's comments in several videos about "nerding out" to make sure her piece was firm and smooth. I will happily work on an under structure for hours so that applying the top coat goes on more smoothly and easily. Although I'm trying to expand my horizons with 2D and wet felting, but my heart belongs to 3D needle felting. Kimberly's moon is exquisite and I'm dying to make a cute frog like Marie's. Great idea Jordan, coming up with the way to measure of firmness!
I still have to complete my elf. Haha maybe next Christmas.
So fun to see how other people work. I also pre stab my wool before starting a shape
Hi from Steinhatchee, Florida !
Although I love all your videos, I wish you would do more needle felting paintings. Those are so informative. Just a thought.
I LOVE HER MOON! ❤
Lots of great tips that will definitely help me make my pieces much better.
So happy to have found your channel! I learned a lot in this single video! Thanks so much.
Hi, not sure how I missed seeing this, I guess work life got in the way! I just am starting the Extreme Faces class! Yay!! So this is just the right timing for this!
Great info thank you so very much and I love both your works
Great tips; thank you!
Thank you very much some great tips there. 👏🏻
This is the tutorial that I needed. I like my pieces to be firm but couldn't figure out why they were still squishy after felting them a lot. I guess that I was starting with the wool being too thick rather than gradually building it up 😅
Sorry I couldn't join the live premiere! Thanks for the excellent tips.
Question: is there any reason not to use a tightly wound ball of wool as a base for a larger felted sculpture like a pumpkin or gourd? I have mountains of scrap yarn on hand and it seems like that would speed up the process considerably.
I'd say try it out and see! Experimenting leads to some of my favorite discoveries.
I would love to know how to make that moon ❤
Nice tips. Thank you! Is it possible to over stab? I'm working on a 3D structure and the snout (it's a dog) became almost powdery and I couldn't get it to firm up. I decided to cut it off and started over on it with success, but I'm not sure why that happened.
It is possible to over stab and turn the wool to powder. I have had this happen when I was not happy with a shape and kept trying to compress it. I think a firm base, and careful, deliberate layering helps avoid overworking.
Thank you!
The dryer balls are too dense. And felting over styrofoam is the worst!
Haha can't edit comment! Auto correct rules again!
