Ah, that makes so much sense! I was wondering why I wasn't getting the texture finish I wanted with the little kits I bought off Etsy, and it's because all the wool is roving.
Yes, lots of kits are roving and it's just that bit harder to felt, there's a lady whose channel is wool felt xi and she uses roving and does amazing pieces so it's possible but it's carded is my preferred wool, thanks for watching and commenting x
I really wish that I'd found your video when I first started needle felting! I just couldn't understand how people made such lovely animals. I was struggling with tops and merino roving and it was so frustrating. Of course eventually I discovered carded wool and I was away and my felting life was made so much easier! I do love your videos. Thank you!
I'm glad you found some carded in the end, it's so much easier, it's part of why I started making videos. Thanks so much for watching and I've lots more videos to make x
Hi Philips, Do you sell anything on Amazon USA? I love your videos. I’ve been watching them for days. You are extremely talented and are so kind. I’d love to hear back from you, Kind regards, Dede
Thank goodness I saw this video! I’ve been working with roving wool from a starter kit and the visible seams have been driving me mad. I was starting to think I was terrible at felting but I was just using the wrong wool! Off I go to buy the right stuff. Thank you! 😊
This was so helpful! Now that I've ordered a bit of wool and worked on several projects, I understand things much better. Now i know why my projects aren't coming out like yours- I've been using roving for all the color layers. Beginner error! But enjoying learning and appreciate your helpful videos so much!
You can card your roving a bit which helps but actual carded wool is so much easier and faster, you'll definitely notice the difference, glad the video helped, thanks for watching ❣️ x
It is so helpful to hear your descriptions and cautions. E.g. the applications one will likely have for the different types (preparations) of wool. To help us/me not UNintentionally choose a material that COULD be used but will be more work to get a certain/intended result.
Thanks a lot for this video! I'm a beginner felter and the kit I bought only had roving wool, so my pieces were coming out with weird textures in them. I had no idea that carded wool was a thing.

For inside of an item check out my core wool video. For suppliers see video below and check out comments as I don't use US suppliers but others have recommended. In America I think roving can be called either so go for carded roving or roving batts. If in doubt just call the supplier and have a chat. Very informative! I got back into the craft recently and splurged a lot on supplies and materials lol. I did try some “core wool” after learning its good for base/cores and I liked how much faster it was. However-I started my current project of my oc (original character) who is a purple (cheshire themed) cat, and so I used the finer wool for coloration which was relatively fine. But then later I’d notice white spots and it can be a bit annoying to fill them in. So I just recently ordered some carded and bulky wools! I got a similar purple in these wools so next time I want to experiment with it and see if it works better as a base. I also got a couple of other natural colors to test out. I think I’ll use white for projects that are already white or mostly white, unless I intentionally want some white to show through haha I’m glad you can get stuff like the carded wools in an array of colors because some of my planned projects and quite colorful as opposed to natural colors
Thanks so much for watching and glad it was useful, carded wool comes in some many colours and is normally a reasonable price, core wool is best for if you are doing a medium to large project just to save some money xx
Love your videos Philippa, so to the point, quick and informative I really needed this as so confused about the different types. I wanted to do some glitsy type animals like a unicorn too but wasn't sure how to get that effect or if there is whool that comes pre-treated with glitter. I guess the rainbow effect piceces you showed here is probebly the only way, rather than adding other materials in? 🤔
This video has been so helpful! 😃 Please could you tell me what the shiny/silky roving is called or any suggestions on what I should be looking for, for a shiny soft finish?? I really appreciate the time you've taken to share your knowledge in these videos, Thank you! 😃
This video was super helpful! Just wondering, I live in the U.S so it’s kind of difficult for me to get my hands on carded wool/ wool in general, usually making me resort to shopping online for wool. Would you happen to know any places on Amazon I could obtain any good wool?
I have a video on suppliers and there are some US ones at the end and in the comments, hopefully they might be good to look at x th-cam.com/video/Y5QVXxEXBj8/w-d-xo.html
Samantha, most of what you get here is top. I use Walking Palm on Etsy, for my core wool. It is carded in sheets. I love them and it’s very clean. I buy 1lb or more at at a time because I do large sculptures.
i have recently found you page and I'm obsessed with your videos. i love all your products! What shops sell the wool as i haven't found any near me that sells it? Many Thanks
I think the green rope and the merino rope are just both roving but the merino has such a long staple and is so fine. The green one is probably corriedale which has more crimp to it. Sliver is generally the term for other types of fibre, like the silk blend you had. The variegated brown one is gorgeous, I use this kind all the time as I love multi colours. carded together they give a great speckled look to firmly felted pieces. I've never had a problem with them getting firm. I work on a much smaller scale though, miniature bears, bunnys, cats etc. :)
Wools are so varied and roving can be the confusing one for beginners. Once carded it's much easier for a beginner but doesn't always come carded. Carded wool felts so much faster and is the best to start with. Over here slivers are rope like not batts in presentation, so many variations it's no wonder beginners get confused. Thanks so much for watching and commenting x
Hi there!! I'm in US. I would really like to know where to buy wool. I drove two hours to a spinnery but the selection of wool for felting was pretty slim. I bought quite a bit tho because of the drive. I have been watching loads of videos as I only jumped into this craft last week. Like I need another hobby lol. Any suggestions you have on where to purchase is greatly appreciated. I would also love a video on how you wash and dry the wools when necessary. Thank you!!
I'm afraid I can't comment on price as I don't order from the US but there is Living Felt, Sarafina Fibre Art, Lionsgate Farm, Felted Ewe, Felted Sky, Grey Fox Felting, some are on Etsy. If you go under my technical playlist I have a video on washing wool, hope that helps and thanks for watching xx
Watch the first couple of beginning felting videos you did, great videos! I am in the United States but would love to try some of the wools you have mentioned. I’ll see if I can find them in the US.
Can you share where you buy your wool, or if not, about what approximate price ranges of carded wool should be? I'm in U.S.A. YOU HAVE HELPED ME SO MUCH, Phillipa!!!!!!🐂🐂🐂🐂🐂
Glad to have helped, here's my video on suppliers, there are some US ones but exact prices are hard because I don't actually buy from them, hopefully one of them is useful, thanks for watching 👀x th-cam.com/video/Y5QVXxEXBj8/w-d-xo.html
hi Philippa, thank you for your explanation, as a total beginner im still a little confused. so i get carded wool to begin with, but when i looked on amazon it listed carded roving? is that different? also i bought what i now think is tops, how would i use that? thanks xx
So it's hard to tell on line unless you go to a dedicated needle felting shop like World of wool or Heidifeathers etc. Carded roving could be either so if there isn't a good picture then probably avoid. Tops and Roving are similar (look like hair, all in one direction). You can use tops as a long haired coat effect or if you want to use it for a flat effect then mess it up in your hands, see my carding video. I crochet, and i have a lot of tiny strings of acrylic wool. Could the scraps be used to needle felt? I made with them something similar to the fiber you show, but i don't know if i can actually use it to needle felt
Hi, you are just going to have to test it, some acrylic wools felt well but the odd one or two don't and you would probably use the scraps for just the inside of a project so you might need to purchase some more wool too x
The difficulty for me is sourcing ethical wool. Alot of merino wool comes from Australia where they are very cruel to the lambs with the mutilation. I tend to search for Blue faced Leister, Shetland, etc.
Thank you for making this video, it will be of much use to me, thank you! Could you also tell me where you got the carded base wool? I would really like to buy some :)

Just found your channel and I am so pleased with all the knowledge you are sharing with us. I am learning a great deal and it makes me excited to get started in Felting again. Thank you for all the tips! I tried this craft years ago and was unhappy with the results and let it go by the wayside. After watching your videos I see all the things I was doing wrong. This is what gets me SO excited about utube, learning new things !!! And yes I checked , my wool is roving
@@feltsbyphilippa yeah I found some online shops that I'll look at later, but they're not handy for last minute decisions, sadly. But you recommended some good brands that ship to canada so I'll look at those
Difficult to say, my local stores do have both types but the range is much better on some online stores, Etsy have some good suppliers, I have a video on where I purchase my wool, are you US? X
Very useful thank you! I'm just about to start out, mainly as part of an artpiece i'm making (For the visually impaired) where I need to create very fluffy cloud. What wool would you recommend for this? And whee to buy it from? (I'm also UK based)
A simple carded wool will create the fluff but is not too soft, not itchy but there are softer wools, anything merino is very soft but takes longer to felt. I use World of Wool, UK, online. Just give them a call and ask what they recommend, especially if you need a really soft wool like a silk, they are very helpful. Glad you like the video and thanks for watching, hope you project goes well x
Now I understand I find it difficult to do. In the Netherlands I bought filling wool and that is roving wool. That's way harder to work with and for things. Now I'm making a big spider and using roving/top wool. It's way to harder to make with this wool.
@@feltsbyphilippa For the core I think it's easier to use carded wool. Yeah a spider haha and I'm afraid of them lol, I saw a video about it here on youtube. I have send that lady this video as well, because she wanted to know more about the different kinds of wool. Thank you for your amazing video's! 💖
@@feltsbyphilippa I have no idea what that is, I will look it up. 😁 But I don't have a lot of money, so must do the most with cheaper wool. But maybe it's a good investment to buy good 'stuffing' wool sometimes
How hardy are the wonderful sheep you make could a child play with it? I guess I would leave the wire out of it!? Maybe someone has a bit of experience to share? Stay safe everyone
I'm afraid it's a no for children as I sell mine so there's no insurance or safety testing, they can easily be pulled apart and the eyes are an issue too, adult ornaments are their category, sorry x
I firmly felt jointed bears and they are very hardy. If felting is done very firmly they are safe for older children. I wouldn't expect anything handmade to be baby safe though. My son used to play with his like action figures! :)
I can see both sides on a busines level: it's a lot safer to state that the felt animal's are not for children because it could be a liability, "if" something happens! On the other side a family member or friend marking one for a child, you would know what age and how the child will play with it. Thank you both for your advice!!
I really love all the felting videos you produce, but as a hearing challenged person, the background music in the videos is very distracting. You have a lovely voice which is very pleasant to hear, it would be so helpful if it wasn't competing with the music. Respectfully, Carla
Why oh why can't you politely say you don't like it, I work very hard to provide free advice and occasionally I get the music level a tiny bit too high because when I first started my editing skills were not great.
I can and I have listened but you came across very rude, positive criticism is just that, your comment upset me and you are the first to do so in nearly a year. Maybe you didn't mean it so but that's how I read it
How lovely to live in a part of the world where you have wool shops to visit! ❤

Yes, you can use any wool, I have lots of tutorials on my channel x
@@feltsbyphilippa Thank you for answering my comment I am very new to needle felting and was a bit unsure cause the local area I live in doesn't sell any needle felting supplies . So I must order it from Takealot. And Fibre wool Is all that they got . I am new to your channel so I wil definitely all your videos and follow your tutorials they are easy to understand and you can consider me as a new subscriber to your channel .
Thank you that I can communicate with you so I don't make a mistake.
Can you maybe do a tutorial for making a pug.
Thank you, glad you like the channel and I've done a Pug here xx

can you make a video about using wool from sweaters?
It's definitely a possibility, I have a bit of a list so will add it, thanks so much for a good recycling recommendation 😀 x
How do you wash your raw wool & with what detergent.
Hi, here's my video on washing wools, hopefully that will help x
th-cam.com/video/xWkK5tL0ko8/w-d-xo.html
Just found your channel and I am so pleased with all the knowledge you are sharing with us. I am learning a great deal and it makes me excited to get started in Felting again. Thank you for all the tips! I tried this craft years ago and was unhappy with the results and let it go by the wayside. After watching your videos I see all the things I was doing wrong. This is what gets me SO excited about utube, learning new things !!! And yes I checked , my wool is roving
Glad to help and I really hope you enjoy it more this time, there's lots of fantastic tutorials and help and advice on TH-cam x
I have the issue to find all of those, but in french. Seems like I can only find roving? Well in my local stores, at least
Etsy is a great place for small suppliers, worth looking at x
@@feltsbyphilippa yeah I found some online shops that I'll look at later, but they're not handy for last minute decisions, sadly. But you recommended some good brands that ship to canada so I'll look at those
Can you use Angora Goat wool?
Yes, you can, it's good as a decorative top coat but might take a while to felt for a body as it's so fine. Wool that has been carded is best x
Have you ever felted with alpaca wool?
Yes, this video shows it x
th-cam.com/video/8kVD0UUZGjs/w-d-xo.html
Where do you get your wool?
Popped the answer on your other comment, thanks
@@feltsbyphilippa I don’t think I had another comment?
It's on my proportions video, my latest one out.
@@feltsbyphilippa thanks, I never would have found it
Are these types of wools something that you can go into your local yarn store for?
@@feltsbyphilippa this is super helpful thank you!!!
No wonder my sample box wool was hard to felts& there were joins. It was roving wool very smooth 😏
Definitely try some carded wool, much easier x
I wish I could wool shop in person but that’s just not really an option for my area 😔
i love this
Thanks x
Now I understand I find it difficult to do. In the Netherlands I bought filling wool and that is roving wool. That's way harder to work with and for things.
Now I'm making a big spider and using roving/top wool. It's way to harder to make with this wool.
Yes, carded really is faster and easier but it's definitely possible to use roving, good luck with your spider, very unusual 😀
Yes, I use a carded perindale batt, much quicker than most cheaper core wool I've found x
@@feltsbyphilippa I have no idea what that is, I will look it up. 😁 But I don't have a lot of money, so must do the most with cheaper wool. But maybe it's a good investment to buy good 'stuffing' wool sometimes
Hi in which country are you located at? Love to join course. Thanks
I am in the UK, I will be doing some online courses for horses next year but I have plenty more video's to make, thanks for watching x
Sorry the "stringy" looking felt what is that called?
Think you means the tops? All in one direction, can also be called roving sometimes but some roving is carded so you have to check x
Thanks so much!! Glad you like it all x
The tips and vídeos are really great! Thank you!!!! They are helping me a lot! But the ambiance music is a little bit lauther.
I know, I've gotten much better at editing now and most videos have little or no music, glad you find then useful x
why do people sell merino tops in starter sets instead of carded please ?
Well, it's possible to use them but just takes longer especially if you are new. You can card them a bit yourself to make it easier x
@@feltsbyphilippa thanks philippa
I just got godfather vibes from the horse head lol! Absolutely amazing work and such great info❤️
Thanks and yes, definitely a bit spooky with no body! X
How can you dye the roving is it fabric dye. I missed that part. Sorry 😐
Sorry miss spelled "Hear", I'm human. 😀 😁
I don't actually dye wool but there might be some other videos on TH-cam showing it, it's quite messy and not an exact science x
Fab info and great clear video. Yhe background music is awful thou. I wonder if pholips actually knows this background is on?
Hi, my editing wasn't very good in the early days but much better now, thanks for watching the video and glad you liked it x
Absolutely, I can't endorse it for children but most 10 year old upwards would be OK x
The music makes it difficult to hear you.
I wasn't very good with my editing in the beginning but much better now x
@@feltsbyphilippa I was too in the beginning. My voice was too low on one of my videos. I gets lots of comments on that. 😊
Thank you, so much to learn in the beginning 🙂
Please, please stop with the music! It is really distracting and detracts from your wonderful instructions!
I had to stop watching because of that
I wasn't very good with my editing in the beginning but much better now x
Don’t need the music. It’s driving me crazy and makes me not want to watch this channel
My editing wasn't very good in the beginning, this is an early video and I have learned my mistake x
I don't even notice the music anymore. Love the quality of your info and videos
I really love all the felting videos you produce, but as a hearing challenged person, the background music in the videos is very distracting. You have a lovely voice which is very pleasant to hear, it would be so helpful if it wasn't competing with the music. Respectfully, Carla
Thank you and sorry, my editing was great in the beginning but I have learnt to use little or no music now, thank you for mentioning it so nicely xx
Horse head without a body are just not ok lol other than that, great video!
I know! Bit creepy 😳 x
Wait, getting this wool isn't harming the animals, right? Veganism isn't really a big concern here?
No, sheep have to be sheared every year for health reasons, have a look on TH-cam for more info, it's a quick affair x
why oh why do people spoil these videos by putting stupid muiscin back ground very off putting and makes it hard ot hear whatis being said
Why oh why can't you politely say you don't like it, I work very hard to provide free advice and occasionally I get the music level a tiny bit too high because when I first started my editing skills were not great.
@@feltsbyphilippa lol it was just a simple comment no need for rudeness .if you can not take it ..do not make it simple .
I can and I have listened but you came across very rude, positive criticism is just that, your comment upset me and you are the first to do so in nearly a year. Maybe you didn't mean it so but that's how I read it
