A great short and sweet demo that covers quite a bit of ground, thanks. It's really not much of a clone at this point. It could be argued that this is what Roland might have done had they continued development of the 808 but they didn't, Behringer did. Behringer should get big ups for this all round but there will no doubt be detractors. I'm interested to see how these features sound on the RD-9. We're truly in a golden age of electronic music instruments.

Alright, I'm sold! As of now, I plan on acquiring the RD-8 and RD-9. I'm not a hardware guy since I produce in DAW, but for live performances, i'd _definitely_ create another side project that would consist of me playing the RD-8 and RD-9 alongside my old microKORG.
Maybe even dust off the old OG Launchpad and run that through Ableton for samples? This is exciting!

I suspect there is little or no difference other than the black buttons. Behringer mention something about a chip, but whether or not that chip is in the MKI, I don't know. They sound the same to me. There are some serious bugs in the RD8, particularly the sequencer. Rather than a revision in the sound, it seems this is a hardware update that fixes the bugs present in the MKI which are hardware related and cannot be remedied via a firmware update. I suspect the MKII is what the RD8 MKI was SUPPOSED to be, i.e. A PROPERLY WORKING DRUM MACHINE.

I have the first one ,, I still have time to return it within the “30 days” Mark, but have to wait until October until MK 2 is available. With that being said, the ONLY way I would return the 1 is if the 2 has “closer to the original 808 sounds” as people claim,,, to the human ears of you can’t tell the difference,, then why part with my 1? I have an original 808 and I’m pretty happy with my RD8 1 as i don’t think you can get any closer,, I’ve never cared for 808 kits that Roland Corp THEMSELVES have made, like the R8 and R8M or Boss drum machines, Behringer has exceeded that with their RD8

Ignoring the sound of the TR and the RD series, what machines work flow do you prefer the most? I don’t care about how they compare to each other. Also on that note what else has a workflow you prefer over these?

    • @Honeysmack
      @Honeysmack  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The workflow of the TR-808/909/707/606 is the one that is most familiar as I've been using them for the past 3 decades. Although the RD series are very immediate and have never referred to the manual. I feel Behringer have evolved the workflow of the originals and added new features without complicating the interface. The main focus for me, is how any piece of hardware can be performed, and the RDs have the immediacy of the originals. The discussion around 'how it sounds' I find boring, everyone can source a x0x sound these days - its the performance interface and immediacy of its controls that can be tricky to get to get right. Behringer have done a great job here.

      (Honest ?)
No analog drum machine (and probably emulation) will ever sound exactly like the original TR 808.
Roland has stated themselves the original units used a defective part that they specifically bought from the chip manufacturer. They were basically factory defects.
Once the defect was corrected and the stock of bad ones ran out...
      No more TR-808's

a million $40 effects pedals exist - a 4bit vic20 can sound like an 808 with the right pedal ! Today's kids are lazy want plug & play. Alot of good earning rap songs used a 400 Hz test tone on 1/2" tape cause they couldn't afford a drum machine !

This is a tribute to the Roland 808... and that's awesome. Clones... meh... but with this added functionality ot feels like an 808 mk2. Behringer is starting to tilt towards direct clones and it's losing that wish list charm of modern interpretations.

How does it compare to a real 808? Who f'ng cares? A vintage 808 goes for $6,000 these days. For 1/20 of that price I get a unit that works great, sounds nice, and I can replace cheaply when it fails. If I was making an album, I'd rent a vintage one, otherwise this is just fine.

The price on the 808 is insane.
I think I paid about 200 for mine in the early 90's.

not sure why the people that expect this to sound exactly like the tr808 annoy you.... after all, that IS the premise of this instrument. its SUPPOSED to sound exactly like the OG 808.... conversely, I am not annoyed when my tanzmaus doesnt sound like an 808, or a 909 or whatever, because, its not MEANT to sound like anything, other than exactly what it is.
its a tanzmaus, the only requirement is that it is a good sounding drum machine.
the manufacturer claims it is an exact sounding clone of the tr808, which is precisely WHY people are buying it.

My 808 doesn't sound like his 808. My 808 doesn't even sound like it did when I bought it.
The way they've been treated / how they've been stored / humidity / temperature and the tolerances allowed on original components all have a huge effect over time.
Restored 808's with new components that (supposedly) match the originals sound like the Behringer.

@@Gainn that is true. another point, is the TD3, people claiming it is not quite like the TB303 it is supposed to emulate perfectly in all respects. the original ones dont even all sound like each other, and depending on their condition, dont necessarily sound very good.
