The Woodworker on the Go: A Tour of My Portable Woodshop

  • A portable woodshop is a great way for a woodworker to be able to take their tools and equipment with them wherever they go. It can be especially useful for those who do not have a dedicated space for woodworking at home, or for those who like to work on projects while they are on the go.
The woodshop also includes, a workbench, and storage solutions for tools and materials.
The benefits of a portable workspace include the ability to work on projects anywhere, the convenience of having all of your tools and equipment in one place, and the ability to easily set up and take down the workshop as needed. A portable workshop might be the perfect solution for you.

Complete professional right here folks. This is what makes all the difference in the world. Most contractors are never this clean and organized. In fact I've never seen any. I used to have a boat business. We worked on large yachts. We had an amazing truck with a grumen rear end. Even cleaner than this with all Moduline and Snap-on tools. We styaed clean all day and if we got dirty we changed our clothes. Our tools boxes were even covered in high end carpet which was changed all the time. We worked on multi-million dollar boats... they were beautiful. Other than my partner and I I never saw any other company as professional as we were. Our rates reflected that and we were often booked 6 months out on work. The down side.... we could never find other techs that were like us.. so it was always us doing the work. SUCH AN AMAZING SET UP YOU HAVE Ron. I'll have ot check out more of your work. Funny, my wife and I are planning on moving to the San Juan's in a few years to finally do some cruising. Maybe we can look you up to build our next home:-) Congrats... I like your style.

Great example and job. Can be done as a standalone shop in the yard to save room in the garage.

Ron, you're very skilled and well thought out. You built that thing like you were going to use it for 500 years. You know we're not around much longer, right ? The closing act is just around the corner. Live every day like it's your last one.

I can’t thank you enough Ron! I’ve used a tool trailer for almost 10 years and have redesigned it 3 times. This time it’s inspired by you and so efficient now. Again thank you for these videos.

I agree with your last comments, Ron. Professionalism is key in this business, and if a contractor rolled up with a trailer like that to one of my jobs, it would immediately instill a sense of trust, integrity, and professionalism. Well done!

Ron I have been in the industry for a long time doing high end remodels, log home building, rustic furniture etc. You have totally revolutionized the way we are approaching efficiency. We use your work benches and work station everyday, and I am currently building out one of our trailers using a lot of your ideas. I know how long it takes to shoot and edit video, thank you for taking the time to do so. We bought a Festool track saw as well, don't know how we did things without it! Keep up the good work! Brandon

Incredible. I can only imagine what customers think of such an organized shop on wheels. I know it's easy to get disorganized especially if your working constantly and moving from job to job. Once you get a system setup it's easier to keep it that way.

Great tour, Ron. I am very envious of your organizational skills and the planning and effort that went into this work trailer. I'm well beyond my "construction years", but when I was building houses, I could identify with your comments about stopping to drive to the lumber yard, hardware store, plumbing supply house, etc. Having everything at your fingertips is a great efficiency improvement.

I bought the plans for the ultimate workbench last year. I spent about 40 hours and $250 to complete it. People are so impressed that I have this workbench and becomes a real conversation piece. When I tell them the story and see I built it, there is instant confidence in my capabilities as a contractor. My last job was a ceiling repair with about 16 sheets. I set up the bench in 5 minutes, unloaded the sheetrock and stacked it on the bench. Minimal movement of materials is key for efficiency. At the end of the day, bungied a tarp over the material and was able to leave knowing the rain would not damage the drywall. Thanks Ron. I try to send people to your TH-cam page every chance I get.

Awesome set up! I have been in the bizz for 36 years working out of the back of a pickup with a topper. I just never seem to have the time or the energy to build this setup, I'm to busy working six days a week to pay my bills. My tools don't look like new either. Maybe when I retire I could do this. It would be great to have a clean shop and everything in its place but as long as I need to build stuff it's going to be sawdust, worn out cords and boxes of screws tipping over.

I have attempted to video some projects, but have failed to attend to the video camera. I seem to have hours of useless video that editing would only make worse. I might have to see about getting some video talent to help out. I have also, thought about building a studio that I could hang doors & windows, set cabinets and trim. It would not be the same as an actual project, but still a good way to demonstrate techniques. If I could only get time away from those pesky clients, you know the ones that pay the bills:0)

Your mobile workshops and benches are awesome. I'm curious if you have any suggestions on how to add a siding brake into this trailer and making it a little more functional. Right now I place mine in the center while transporting and set it up on saw horses while using. I'd like to make it more functional cause it's always I the way. I also added a roll out camper awning to the exterior of my trailer so when it rains I can still work in a dry space and shading from the sun! You have great ideas! Thank you for sharing them

That's a VERY *nice* setup. What if you have a job site that doesn't have electricity available ? Have you thought of setting up your trailer with a gas powered generator for providing electricity ? Something that I thought about of which I think you would benefit from is installing your self a Solar Powered exhaust fan system into the trailer that would circulate fresh air through your trailer for.in those very Hot Summers. You could incorporate into the exhaust system what is called a "Snap-Disc Controller". It's function provides controlling of the fan(s) based upon temperatures. It will turn on the exhaust fan when it reaches say 120 degrees and shut off when the temperature drops 20 degrees. They come in different temperature variables. Also, not only could you power it by solar but you could also use a solar panel.to charge up your batteries or a box fan to cool off in front of too. Hope this idea benefits you ? BTW I love watching your videos.
