It blows me away that Ms Norman can open her voice to soar triumphantly over a massive Wagnerian orchestration, and then repose in such subtle song stylings. Usually it's one or the other, and she does them both. Absolutely stunning!!!
I’ve always listened to a lot of musical genres in my life. Many years ago (I was a kid) a friend of mine and me we're talking about classical music and singers of this genres and he said: "do you know Jessye Norman?" I said "no". So, he puted some her records on the record player to listen to some parts from the Norma and by Giuseppe Verdi. I was amazed! Then something came...I was lying on the ground for what I had heard. He played me a her jazz record that I remember it was released on the Polyor label. I don’t know how many times I looked at the cover of that record turning it over a thousand times. I couldn’t believe it was always her! Awesome vocal technique. Just totally amazing! ps: the same friend (many years ago) he gave me for my birthday her cd where is this famous song. Amazing voice once again! Rip Jessey.
What a beautiful song. I don't even know the original, and did not know Jessye had sung popular songs!! It's another good surprise on your channel. A very simple but touching song. Jessye's deep voice is beautiful, of course, and I think the accompanist is very good, too.
For classical-lovers who remain mostly indifferent, or antipathetic to jazz, it's often a good way into a genre we wouldn't otherwise explore, hearing an artist such as Jessye interpret in her own way. I can sympathise with jazz-lovers who don't like this, but for me, it tunes in with what i like best in music; the sheer vocal quality is seductive enough and John Williams, king of krossover, subtly adds his mark beautifully.
Jessye Norman sang what she wanted. And she was successful in every lane. Her and Cece Winans have that in common. Yes Cece sings gospel but she sings different styles of it. No one wants to stay in a boring box. Because it's boring
Dont worry about!
just MAGIC, a delicate Grand Dame Jessy Norman❤
