I remember Terry Vaughn being ejected from his car at Sun Prairie Wi back in the 80's. Conjecture at the time was the arm restraint straps got under the lap belt lever and opened it. After that I had a tab welded on my lap belt lever to prevent that from happening.

On a side note, glad to see Rico is still racing. I always liked him as a driver.

I think the first he better do is figure out his restraints and why they didn't work.

    • @briansmith5469

Yes very rare anymore that restraints or anything thing that protects you. I remember I believed it was Dale Earnhardt Jr for got to put his belts on. Heck skydiving instructors have for gotten their own parachutes.

@@briansmith5469 I think he's the one who unlocked his belts accidentally by releasing the lock while swerving back and forth. He also didn't get his steering wheel latched in place and pulled it off of the shaft while on the track. Had to turn the shaft with his hand to stay out of the wall. There's footage from inside the car of both incidents.

I've spent my whole life at the track and raced over 20 years now and I've seen loose belts cause issues and improperly installed belts rip outta the floor but never seen a latch fail... my fear has always been the opposite.... my belt not coming off in a fire

Very lucky young man.. However. Its inexcusable the safety systems in the car failed that badly. The sanctioning body and race engineers should be looking to see why and what can be done so it doesn't happen again.

Slow it down and you can see the seat belt failed more than likely if failed where it was attached unlikely it broke as a racer we need to make safety top priority I get it normally top priority is how to make it faster when we should be putting safety 1st speed 2nd the good lord was looking out for him

Hey Folks...Time to pay a little more at each track . The key here is the response of the staff . . Well trained staff and equipment makes the difference.
thousands of people volunteer every weekend across our planet.. its time for track owners to PAY for training.... unify your Track requirements on emergency staff and corner workers... I also suggest a stamina/strength test if you don't do it... the government will... no one wants that...

Glad the kid is okay, but there is NO reason for a driver to eject from one of these cars. He should be forbidden from ever competing again as he clearly is a liability to the sport. Any promoter should demand a $50 million dollar cash bond before allowing him on the track.

It's " news" because being ejected from a midget / sprint / silver crown car is very very rare nowadays. It's "news" so we can follow the story and find out how and why this happened and possibly save someone's life down the road. Whether it was a malfunction or user error I can guarantee you that the father is not going to let his son strap into the car if he thought there was any chance of him coming out of it. This kid is so fortunate to even still be with us, let alone be in as good a shape as he is. Comments like yours are ridiculous.
