I'm not sure I entirely agree. I suppose it depends on how you define "comics", but in general I'd argue that the medium as a whole would continue to thrive even if both DC and Marvel fully pulled out. That being said, they are major representitives of the western world's input into the medium and it'd suck pretty bad to lose them.

I tend to lean toward DC. They innovate. DC started the Multiverse. They had adult titles like Sandman. Their writers are given freedom to do their thing. Marvel is good at an intertwined single universe. Their editors do their thing.
As an artist, I've always respected DC for their innovations-- Watchmen started an age of deconstructionism, for better or worse. They had strong titles outside of the superhero genre. Hell, they STARTED the superhero genre.

I 100% agree with everything you said, Marvel does however have adult titles like The Punisher or Punisher MAX.... I don't know if that counts but everything you said is on point. I do enjoy reading a lot of Marvel characters, maybe even more than DC characters but DC delivers on a larger quantity of quality stories. Even if I'm not a fan of the character, the story will be premium 👌🏽

Despite the history, it's suprising that the two companies have more of a buddy rivalry than anything. They usually reference, shoutout, or even crossover within the comics in fun and interesting ways, and even now, their parent companies (Warner and Disney) are even buddy rivals, with Disney and Warner working on a lot of different things together you wouldn't expect. I'm personally not a superhero guy, but I always find it fun when two major studios competing in the same thing can still work together and have some fun, hell, DC Comics even let Stan Lee take his own approach to some of DC's most popular heroes, and with how protective DC is of their IPs, seeing a unique spin on Batman by someone new was a breath of fresh air.

Ironically, Blade was a release from New Line Cinema, the studio that was known as "The House Freddy Built". They maintained an automony within its parent company until the late 2000's, then it was absorbed into the parent company's other movie studio. The parent company was Time Warner, and the studio was Warner Bros Pictures, the distributor of all the DC movies.
Technically, Warner Bros owns Blade and the two sequels, even though they are Marvel movies.

    • @daltigoth3970
      @daltigoth3970 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

I don't know that Blade really qualifies as the kick starter for the MCU, so much as the capstone to the vampire film renaissance. It came out a couple years before the first X-Men movie, but most people at the time didn't really associate Blade with Marvel Comics since it came in during the vampire craze of the 90's, coming out a year after the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series debuted. Unless you were already a comics fan and knew of the Blade comics, Blade was just another vampire movie, albeit a pretty good one starring a top-tier actor, but that was not uncommon in the 90's. Consider that the following vampire movies also came out in the 90's and featured A-list actors:
Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) - Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins, Keanu Reeves
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992) - Donald Sutherland
Interview with the Vampire (1994) - Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Christian Slater
Dracula: Dead and Loving It (1995) - Leslie Nielsen
Vampire in Brooklyn (1995) - Eddie Murphy, Angela Bassett
From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) - George Clooney
Tales from the Crypt: Bordello of Blood (1996) - Dennis Miller
      John Carpenter's Vampires (1998) - James Woods
      Blade (1998) - Wesley Snipes
After Blade's release in 1998, vampire movies basically died out for a few years until Underworld sparked a short resurgence in 2003 that others tried to capitalize on and largely failed. Sadly, the next successful vampire film after Underworld wasn't until Twilight in 2008, and there hasn't really been any other successful vampire films other than that series. There were still vampire movies coming out in those years of course, but none of them are notable aside from sequels to the films mentioned above and most of the sequels failed to live up to the popularity of the originals. Prior to 1992, the last really successful vampire movie was The Lost Boys from 1987.

True, specially because Valiant was shut down or something for a long time before coming back in the last decade. That said, I don't understand why a company like, for example, Netflix, hasn't bought Valiant or at least the right to make movies/tv series based on Valiant's IPs. Valiant would be a bargain of a purchase and if whoever takes this risk, put similar effort on planning and crafting their cinematic universe as Marvel did, they're set for success (let's forget the Vin Diesel movie and start fresh).
To illustrate what I'm saying, Sony is trying to capitalize on its Spider-Man properties. They're making a Madame Web movie! And there's the Morbius movie coming up too. Venom at least is a popular character and even has/had its own title.
So if some suit thinks that people will be interested in movies like Madame Web (it could be good, just saying it's very obscure), then a Valiant cinematic universe would be a safe bet. Or the Image originals (Spawn, Wild Cats, Savage Dragon - although Wild Cats are DC now, I believe)...

Small correction: at about 7:55 you mention "comic book stores" but dedicated shops that sold comics did not exist until the late 70s and didn't really become popular on until the mid '80s. Prior to that, most comic books sales were made at newsstands and convenience stores, and later in supermarkets, book stores, toy stores, etc. Even into the late '80s the first comics I ever bought were at the checkout counter of the supermarket. They were still sold there well into the 1990s.

More Fun and then New Comics which became New Adventure Comics and then Adventure. He owned these titles under Nicholson Publishing Inc. He was co-owner of Detective Comics with Jack Leibowitz and Harry Donenfeld. D&L forced Nicholson Publishing Inc. into bankruptcy. He did not sell out. There is no documentation for how they pushed him out of Detective Comics but it was most likely as a way of covering supposed printing debts. Printing and distribution during that period was rife with corruption and organized crime. The Major hired Siegel and Shuster, Sheldon Mayer, Bob Kane and many other important Golden Age artists.

I think you pretty much glossed over the most impactful, that being Stan and Jack's creation of more relatable characters, set in the "real world" (New York as opposed to fictitious cities) and carrying on more serialized content. At that time, DC was focused on the pre-teen market. They would take several years worth of stories and simply recycle them knowing that their target audience had outgrown comic books and the new audience hadn't read those stories yet. You are absolutely correct that without DC, Marvel wouldn't even exist, but without Stan and Jack, comic books would have forever been a child-targeted medium.

Had some friends that were into comics growing up. One of them was into Wolverine and the other was into The Punisher. I took a liking to the X-Men but never really got into comics themselves, just collected the trading cards to trade with my friends since they collected them too. Being into videogames, when Capcom started making fighting games with Marvel characters, my interest expanded however up until that point I was more into the Batman videogames (some pretty good ones).
I don't want to trigger any Marvel fans but as far as the movies go, the first Iron Man was my favorite of the more recent movies and I started disliking the movies after the Disney buyout. I feel like the MCU craze is a bit silly as from what I can tell, not only do they crank them out too fast but their comic to movie adaptation is questionable. Like what they did to Ultron and Thanos (they don't really seem like their comic character selves). I'm pretty sure my friends that I grew up would agree, the movies are laughably bad in terms of staying true to the source material.

Doesn't matter how fast or how many MCU films come out they're almost always great films and even their worst films blows DC out of the water. You just don't like the MCU because it's popular you can't even explain what you don't like about them, just "DiSnEy BaD". Since when did "comic accuracy" automatically mean "good film" ??? That has nothing to do with how good the film is. Majority of people haven't even read the comics so who cares ? You think you're smarter or better than someone because you read some comics ? You're really going to pretend Infinity War wasn't amazing and MCU Thanos isn't one of the greatest villains ever put on screen ? MCU Ultron as well great characters in their films. You're out of touch and MCU's success just proves you're wrong.

@@paulkane2391 what's more important to people when it comes to super hero content, the action or the story ? I'm not saying the story doesn't matter but obviously people come to see the hero fight the villain or another hero whatever the point is that's what's most important to people. That's why I like Marvel's What If show so much because it gets straight to the conflict and action and doesn't take 5 movies to build a story. I love the movies as well but What If actually made me like certain characters even more because in my opinion that show, showcases the best of the characters. For example I never really cared for Captain Marvel but after watching What If I want to watch the Captain Marvel movie now. We come to see the characters show off their skills, abilities and fight. It's all about the writing to me.

Theres something I disagree with, pre MCU the Avengers were never really as popular as the Justice League, which is still a popular IP just not on the big screen.

DC makes better animated movies, while Marvel makes better live-action movies. Either way, I'm happy to see both. I do prefer DC more, based on their characters and stories.

I always thought DC had the best villians and marvel the best heros. As a nerd I can love both.

The same people always worked back and forth at both companies. The rivalry is good for marketing. It's not like there are really that many avenues for employment in the trade.

It always comes down to which characters do you like the most. For me, my favorite comic book character is Batman, so I’d lean more with DC, but I do like Marvel characters like Wolverine, Spider-Man and the Punisher quite a bit. For superhero/comic book films, The Dark Knight Trilogy have always been my favorite since I first saw them in the theater. Of course there are other great comic book films, but that trilogy are my go to films regarding comic book films. Great video man.

The way they've both been going for the last 5+ years, I no longer care about either. I can't even say I wish them well, I only wish that they reap from the seeds they've sown.

I like Marvel films and Spider-Man is my favourite superhero, but I prefer DC. I like many of the characters and I like the story elements unique to DC. Plus while I don’t think Marvel and the MCU is always the same, DC does have more variety in both the comics and adaptions.

Growing up as a kid in the 90s, I was more into Marvel, in particular the X-Men, than DC Comics. I stopped reading comics when I started high school because I felt they were immature and I was more focused on school, sports, and girls. Thanks to the hype of the New 52, I started buying comics again out of curiosity. With DC Rebirth, I drifted further towards DC and fell in love with DC comics and started reading a lot of the bronze age 70s and early 80s stuff and post Crisis stuff and fell in love with DC. I don't even bother with Marvel anymore since they're constantly doing new #1s and aligning the comics more with the MCU.
