I had the same problem on my year 2010, C200 Mercedes. The new tensioner had 4 holes instead of 2, so it fills up with oil much quicker. I did the job myself after looking at a youtube video. After all, its just a matter of unscrewing a "bolt", and screw in the new one. Piece of cake. Anyone can do it. The thing is, its just an O-ring in there, and it wears out after a few years. In my case it lasted for 200 000 km. If you drive with it in that condition too long, the "plastic" guides its pushing on, can get broken by the timing chain hammering it.. On my car that means lifting out the engine for repairs..... It would have been a disaster.

This sure does sound like a fraud case. Two different Mercedes Benz dealerships misdiagnosing a Mercedes Benz with a $39k quote for an engine replacement when a $60 part resolved the problem. I would, at a minimum, report that behavior to the FTC, and I wouldn't go back to either of those dealership.

As a technician, a diagnostic check is to check the problem of a vehicle and verify the problem. But I guess in this era of technicians, they are not properly trained and misinform customers. They take a look at vehicles like it's a difficult math problem and then guess the issue. But yes, a refund for that diagnostic from Omaha Mercedes needs to be refunded.👌

Mercedes, at a minimum, should replace the timing chain and new tensioner under the exhaust modification warranty. That if you have gone over the 40,000 or 4 year coverage. I own a S-350 and Mercedes has changed the following under the warranty: Turbocharger, both intakes, timing chain and tensioners EGR twice, intake manifold, all 6 injectors, and intercooler hoses. They also changed the oil cooler (which I paid for during timing chain replacement). When we picked up the car it was idling very rough and Mercedes said both mother mounts and transmission mount was bad and causing rough idle. Changed motor mounts and transmission mount and still very rough idle and Mercedes cannot fix the problem I didn’t have prior to having the car repaired. The exhaust modification program is not well represented by Mercedes and o can’t get technical answers from anyone representing the modification program. I would like to know what goes along with each item lists under warranty. For example, it says Charge air System is covered. What all in the charge air system should my local Mercedes Dealer be obligated to change. The turbo intake silencer is leaking boost and I believe should have been changed but cannot verify. Corporate Mercedes and the independent Mercedes dealer do not talk to on another. So we are at the mercy of the local independent dealer. They are in the business of making money, not covering corporate warranties. This is a sad situation and bad deal all around. If Mercedes could not get it right the first time, how can they get it right now. Perhaps that is why Mercedes no longer sell diesel cars and sprinters in the U.S. any longer.

Hate to say this. Some of these dealers is all about making money. With they high tech diagnostics equipment they should be better in diagnosing issues. The problem that I see is that the technician at the Mercedes dealership that you went to are not well trained and do not understand what they diagnostic equipment is telling them.

I bought a 2008 E320 Bluetec. (in 2011) . My mechanic nearly had a heart attack when i brought it in for its first oil change! “Why in the hell didnt you contact me before you bought it???!!! This is the worst engine Mercedes ever made! Get rid of it now or youll spend thousands every year keeping it on the road!” I didnt listen and kept it for a year. $9000 later i traded it in. The next owner ended up suing the dealer because the engine locked up on the way home due to oil sludge (the oil had been changed every 10,000 miles as mandated by Mercedes Benz.

We owned a GL450 a few years ago. Worst car even and I’ve owned over 30 cars from the basic Toyota via the Merc and Bentley. Car got to 100k and blew up, engine leaks, transmission plastic parts fell off. Was the last Merc we ever bought. Meantime, I do like older Mercs, bought a w124 convertible. Had Merc dealer do the PPI, clean bill of health. Car gets shipped her, leaking oil like the Exxon Valdiz. Head gasket was gone. I hate to say it, MB quality both in their cars and their service operations is not what it used to be. Buy Toyota or Lexus, I work for neither but MB is basically Schrott as they say in German. We done on finding the fix yourself.

@ the sound of the door closing on a w126 is pure magic. I have a w140 and it is like driving on a flying carpet, comfortable to the nth degree. What lets it down is the plastic which after 20 odd years is beginning to go brittle and break. Post the w140 cars were engineered to break after the warranty ran out. Even our local independent mechanic says, don’t buy Mercs unless you want to pay for my grandchildren’s college :). I now do most of the work on our cars myself. Fun and never a dull moment. Be well and enjoy the ex tractor.
