I just watched the opposite of this; where a luthier removed frets from a high end bass, and then meticulously filled in the fret slots with maple veneer, applied several thin layers of superglue, and finally sanded and polished the fretboard to a mirror finish. Seeing the much easier version of the same thing was actually inspiring, to be able to see how easy the project could be. I'm off to try something in the middle with my fairly cheap bass Thanks for the video!
Maxon Mendel yes that one. I really want to try that with a cheap p bass I have, but I would hate to ruin it. It didn’t cost me much money but it’s worth a lot to me. Then again, I’d hate to try it on a cheaper project guitar, accidentally do a good job, and then have to start over again on the bass that I like to play.
I'm sure that there is a happy middle ground between this and the high end fretless conversions that would actually look and sound decent, and be easy enough for the average person to do.
Damn, dude. I'm about to do this to my Mitchell. I love cigar box guitars, two string basses, weird experimental instruments. I've wanted to take the frets off this cheap Mitchell bass my wife bought me for Christmas one year but i felt like I'd destroy it. This video gives me hope. Sad to see the drones whining about how it looks. Look at any signature replica guitar by any of your favorites: there's a reason it looks like that. The Frankenstein looks like absolute garbage, but it played the way EVH wanted it to. You're supposed to tear it up and make it your own, not keep it perfect and pristine. The tone is gnarly, by the way. Great video.
I have a old acoustic guitar im converting into a acoustic bass and im going to try to sand the metal frets down even with the fret board, it probably wont work but screw it, im gonna try it👍.
@@baileyswansson3004 it didn't work for me, i basically ruined the guitar, between drilling bigger holes in the head stock for bass tuners, ordering a bass guitar 4 string nut , sanding it down so the strings would be low to the fret board and widening the nut slot so the nut would fit was a whole lot of work, when i sanded the frets down i basically destroyed the fret board lol, i don't have the skills to do extensive guitar work but i thought i would try it, im a welder fabricator , the guitar was junk anyway 👍.
This channel needs more subs. Any tips on reinforcing acousting guitar's neck to survive bass tensions? Always wanted an electroacoustic fretless bass and found a shitty guitar near the garbage bin in da hood lmao
Thanks. I don't have any tips on reinforcing it, but four bass strings probably isn't any more tension than six guitar strings. Anyway, If the neck bows a little bit, that's a good thing because the strings won't buzz. Good luck
The two string is very reminiscent of the band, Presidents of the United States of America. I've got a bass I found in the garbage. I've been looking for a weird project to do with it, so I'm glad I found this. Also people with their pissy comments can fuck off. This is clearly shown and stated as a project, not something you'll do on a high end instrument. Quit trippin'.
i LOVE IT- I'm all about EZ- I was given a piece of shit Ibanez n have removed the frets. It plays O K but now I'm going that peanut butter Ace wood filler n sand her down. Nice job bro...
That was sooo gross! There's no way that goo got down into the fret slots, you'll have airspaces where there's no filler, and the neck will start to bend to fill up the gaps. That's why people go to the trouble of filling each slot with solid, well seated strips of wood.
Hi Colin, surprisingly this guitar still plays great after years! However, I agree that filling the frets individually with wood is absolutely the higher-quality and overall "correct" way to go about this project. The point of this video is to highlight that the "low quality way" can be just as functional as the much more laborious "correct method".

I just watched that three minutes ago!
You can also use a belt grinder and flatten frets then throw some finish on top lol
The motto of every DIY guitar builder/modder like myself - "Good Enuff" 😂
absolutely radical bass tutorial young man. Cant wait to show this to my grandson. I think he would call it "bitchin" as the kids say these days

this reminds me of howtobasic
Just add eggs.
I was seriously expecting he would smear a chicken over that fretboard with bacon grease.
Use caulking an a wet rag it works well and you have white fret lines where the old metal used to be.

Gotta know if this worked or not? I was considering doing it myself for a mark sandman style bass

I find if you use your own shit to fill the fret slots is best
